Tripper.....er.....TOP MSL is 880'. Correct me if I am wrong, but I spent hundreds of hours flying into and out of Billard and Forbes. Now...if you want to talk Johnson County Executive.....well, you may be right. Remind me, when our paths cross, to tell you one of the FUNNIEST stories about hurtling down 35 at JoCo tossing stuff out the door of a 172RG about 1AM on the way to Concordia to hunt. Even at that time of the night the density altuitude darn near did me in......I think if you look at the lights you'll see skid marks. Yeah...lots of folks are glad I am in NYC...I mean...how much damage can I do here? Utoh. Court | ||

Geez Court, you are a stickler. You are correct about TOP. I fly from IXD = 1086. I had a girlfriend in Topeka that had me flying into Billard alot. A very nice place with a good $100 hamburger. That hump where the runways intersect makes an interesting launch pad for a V35B. Did you know you can fly the Kaw river from Billard to Lawrence below the treetops? Only one barn along the way. Pull up for the bridge when you get to the west end of Lawrence and make sure the transponder is off. | ||

Blake, Would it be possible to change the subject heading at the top of this section to read July 11-15th instead of June 20-24th? Wouldn't want anyone to show up in June and wonder why nobody else showed up. Of course they then could pre-run the routes and post a trip report. Thanks. | ||

Tripper: To heck with the intersection of 13/17 at TOP. From Billard take up a 290o heading and look for my favorite grass strip, Mesa Verde. It'll take a 20' AGL pass to remove the cattle. Careful over the barbed wire. After you taxi and get in position...dial in a full-effort short field procedure and get ready. You wanna talk "mondo speed bump"....this is akin to Evel leaving the ramp over the Canyon. My favorite local play remains leaving TOP at midnight and doing my "touch and go's" at 7 different fields. The controllers at MCI will hassle you, but on initial contact..."8939F request clearance to land and taxi to United States Postal facility". They can't deny you access to a postal facility. They can get very testy about it. Try this at 5:30pm on Friday afternoon and you'll be doing time about 9 miles to the West of the field (Leavenworth Federal Pen). By the way...you can thank your old pal Court for those two wonderful strobes on the tops of the towers to your west. They are 345'AGL where we built the 345kV line accross the Missouri. It you want to see the "special treatment" I received as the "bosses son" do a fly over....check out the HUGE orange aircraft balls and try to guess who got'em them and how. HINT: It involves a Sherman & Reilly high quality pulley and a LONG piece of 3/8 rope. I miss Kansas. Court | ||

Colorado Lodging Reminder!!! Please remember that there are eleven management companies that rent units in the Longbranch Complex. Some rent only a couple of units some have nine or ten. So if one of the companies tells you that the Longbranch is booked up, that means that the units they have on their rental program are booked. Not necessarily the the whole complex. Each of these companies will try to rent you something they have on their program. So if you want to stay at Longbranch then shop around. But also be aware that Breckenridge is not that large so that where ever you stay you are only a few blocks from Longbranch. There are only two one bedroom units that are rented here at Longbranch. One is already rented and the other is in limbo trying to decide on a new managment company. If you want a one bedroom unit please ask any of the companies what they have avalible in other complexes. The company I work for (The Managers Inc.) has rented all of their Longbranch units for the rally time period. They do have many other units in Breck on their rental program. If you come across a company that tells you all their Longbranch units are booked please post the name here so others can check and see which companies not to call. If the Longbranch complex does fill up there are hundreds of condos in town. So there will be something avalible. Looking forward to meeting all who make in July. Kim | ||

Not sure where else to ask this, but seeings as how it's related to getting indirectly to Colorado I figure this will work. Has anybody rode/ridden/been-on road 44 between Manila UT and Dutch John UT? This is between Burntfork WY and Vernal UT. Or for a broader view it's between Salt Lake City and Colorado. Actually it should be rb%3b7%3bb5m-r2qfj5m%3be10h%284&pcat=,here if the link works. I just stumbled across what looks like an interesting road and thought I'd ask before I find out the hard way if it's a good or bad road surface. Thanks, okay back to my daydreaming and planning. Mike J I have not ridden 44 but have another road for you to consider. A Ted Bishop wrote an article in the March 1998 issue of Rider( the one with a test of the 98 S1W in it). He traveled from Edmonton, Canada to Austin, Texas. Going through Utah he found Highway 31. Called it the best motorcycle road in the universe. It runs from Fairview to Huntington. Find Provo on the map and follow highway 89 south east to Fairview. Kim | ||

Don, Right now I'm looking at the weekend before the 4th of July for the westward leg to the Pacific, then the week of the Colorado event for the ride indirectly into Colorado. OKAY....boys and girls ! Time to start polling the troops so that we can be formulating a rough head count for the upcoming event. I've gotta tell you...when this idea came up, I liked it but never dream it would be so wel received or so well planned. The idea of a "Team Elves Social Event" to augment the "Racing Event" seemed cool. A chance for ELVES from near and far to gather with no "have to be at the line in 10 minutes" pressure. Just fellowship and fun. The only contraint, in the beginning, was that someone had to be willing to "carry the water" to allow Aaron to be free to focus on the RR-1000 for the years 2001-A Salt Oddessy effort. I've seen good and I've seen better....but, frankly, Kim, Cheryl and Phil stepped up and have planned what threatens to be a classic among Buell events. Coolest part, like the Bonneville event, is that it, once again, showcases how much talent we have among our numbers. Anyway....time to start raising the hands. Even it's tentative, it's gonna help to know. I'm gonna have to lay this one off on Kim as well, so let's make it easy and have everyone just cut and paste the following and e-mail it to KIM. Let's see, 12 steps, 1) bike in neutral and hit the starter, 2) clunk into first gear and go, 3) grab second and keep going, 4) grab 3rd, 5) grab 4th and take the corner, 6) grab 5th and goose it, 7) grab some brakes and find 4th, 8) take another corner and find 3rd, 9) grab 2nd and see home, 10) click into 1st and glide up the driveway, 11) find neutral, 12) smile. Yep, 12 steps alright. You could be right, it probably was BuellieDan. Sorry about that. I got one of the Chalet/Cabin places at the campground for Thursday and Friday nights, 3 miles out from Breckenridge. If you decide to head up then let me know. Last time I checked the dates for the Colorado ride was starting on July 15th. Now I'm seeing the event start on July 11th. Can someone PLEASE post the correct dates? I've had this vacation set at work since I first read about it months ago and am now findign the dates changed. I've been up through Colorado alot and would enjoy riding with some fellow Buellers for once. | ||

Hello from the Top of the Rockies, We are getting so excited about you traveling here to ride the mountain roads of Colorado. Here is more great information and some food for thought before you getting here. We have talked to the local assistant chief of police. He has offered trailer parking space, if we run out of room at Longbranch. If we can get a count, we can make arrangements with him ahead of time. P.S. The local Breck militia drives white Land Rover Discovery’s. Those coming from the south on Hwy 285, be aware that Fairplay and ALMA are speed trap towns. Save $10 and pre-register with Jay @ ATC 978-464-0055 Sunday traffic For those leaving on Sunday going east on I-70, the traffic is frequently very heavy going to Denver. Plan on leaving early or late. Any time between 10 am and 4 PM are the heaviest periods. Ride schedule: Wednesday (for those early birds): short ride to Camp Hale, 114 miles This will be a breaking in to check how your bike is going to run at 9,000 feet And maybe show off your talents at the camp ground. Camp Hale was a WW1 training camp. There is a about 1.5 mile stretch of STRAIGHT PAVED road thru the middle of the camp. Hooliganism? Thursday: 1) Peak to Peak highway. 182 miles. We will take you up and down 2 very tight canyons. 2) Hwy 50 /Royal Gorge. 216 miles. Follow the famous Arkansas River and visit the Royal Gorge, the world’s highest suspension bridge. Do YOU dare look over the edge? 3) Steamboat Springs. 220 miles. Up to Steamboat Springs, eat at Johnnie B Goods 50’s style restaurant. See the June issue of Motorcyclist. Thursday evening, (fooooooood) we all get together in Breckenridge for supper at Salt Creek Saloon. Friday: 1) RKYMTHI to Silverton ( 336 miles) and 6 Mnt pass.(400 miles) This will be 2 groups riding together to Sapinero, separating, some going on to Silverton and the rest returning to Breckenridge. 2) Gore Pass, 175 miles. Very scenic with lots of different terrain with passing curve. 3) Mount Evans 180 miles. You will travel the highest paved road in the United States. Saturday: 1) RKYMTHI Hwy 141, 300 miles. 60 miles of which winds along the Dolores River. 2) Steamboat (for those who chose different ride on Thursday) 3) Camp Hale (ditto for those who weren’t here on Wednesday) Sunday: 1) RKYMTHI leaves Silverton. The Breckenridge group will ride down to meet for lunch (in Salida, The Windmill Restaurant) with the returning RKYMTHI group. Self-lead rides: 1) Loveland pass, self-lead and a very short 45 mile ride. Past Arapahoe Basin ski area (highest ski area in the U.S.), over Loveland Pass and thru the Eisenhower Tunnel. 2) Rocky Mountain National Park. Its a beautiful ride thru the park, going up to 12,183 feet, but beware of heavy RV traffic this time of year. 300 miles 3) Turquoise Lake near Leadville, Colorado. 125 miles.
