So true Tripp, but you can take a sneaky detour and lay low as soon as the LEO with the radar fades from site. (not that I would ever even consider such a thing... sure do miss my old 1970 Chevelle SS, hehehe, that car put more than one Porsche driving SMU frat boy to shame.) |

he , speeding guy's , do i have to drive the VAN to get you to court and back without you're license ? This will cost you'll some pocket money , i'm glad now that my speeding ticket in France was only $100,--. |

You got off light Charley. I got caught in France in '94 doing 125mph in the Saab Turbo. The Gendarmes took £110 off me on the spot then the courts wrote to me back home and demanded another £150 ! The bastardios never got it, at least not yet they didn't. This is the reason I'm always well behaved when I'm in France After all, I wouldn't want the cops "fishing" through the old computer records Rocket in England |

"This is the reason I'm always well behaved.." Believe it or not: That was in the old days the idea behind speeding tickets. Hans |

Just send the speeding tickets to Erik Buell. He's the dirty scoundrel who built these bikes. He's the one to blame. |

Rocket ... on that gearing subject ... don't take my word for it, read this page. Also, for you folks with international gearing and electronic speedometers ... notice the speedometer recalibration box on that page. Y'know, Rocket, you could have your cake and eat it too if you get their 6-speed. As tricked out as your bike is, you NEED that gearbox. AW |

Thanks for that page Aaron, as if I'd doubt you (see, that's my new found appreciation of things Wilsonitis) I looked at the Baker 6 before, and if memory serves me correct, I had the 5th gear as very close to the stock 5th gear and 6th was nothing but an overdrive, so I didn't see an advantage. I think I'm gonna study that Baker 6 again. Any idea of price ? Again, maybe I'm dumb, but what's the formula to work out the torque percentages at the rear wheel given differing final drive ratios. Right now I can't concentrate so if it's easy it's just a case of Rocket not "seeing the wood for the trees". I'm not usually this stupid, honest By the way dude, I'm in the process of sorting a US front pulley, but at the moment I'm that busy I've not even ridden my Buell since France. To be honest, the wheel problem held up the riding, then the weather turned s h i t anyway. However, this weekend is race day at Cadwell Park (a very fine circuit) and at least two Buell's are in the line-up, Warr's and Black Bear's, racers both, and I intend to be there. Rocket, Torque at the rear wheel is just: torque at the engine (i.e. what a Dynojet shows) x primary ratio (1.6) x the transmission ratio (depends on the gear you're in) x the final drive ratio (55/29=1.9 for you, 61/27=2.26 for US) Speed is just: rotations per minute x minutes per hour (usually 60) / primary ratio / transmission ratio / final drive ratio x tire circumference in inches (about 77.9" for an average 180/55ZR17) / 12 inches to a foot / 5280 feet to a mile So, supposin you're at 4000 rpm, about where a Buell likes to cruise, and have 100 ft/lbs of torque on tap ...
Gear | Eng Tq | x Pri Ratio | x Trans Ratio | x Final Ratio | = RW torque | Mph | 1st | 100 | 1.6 | 2.69 | 1.9 | 818 | 36.1 | 2nd | 100 | 1.6 | 1.97 | 1.9 | 599 | 49.3 | 3rd | 100 | 1.6 | 1.43 | 1.9 | 435 | 67.9 | 4th | 100 | 1.6 | 1.18 | 1.9 | 359 | 82.3 | 5th | 100 | 1.6 | 1.00 | 1.9 | 304 | 97.0 | With US gearing, it would be:
Gear | Eng Tq | x Pri Ratio | x Trans Ratio | x Final Ratio | = RW torque | Mph | 1st | 100 | 1.6 | 2.69 | 2.26 | 974 | 30.3 | 2nd | 100 | 1.6 | 1.97 | 2.26 | 713 | 41.4 | 3rd | 100 | 1.6 | 1.43 | 2.26 | 518 | 57.1 | 4th | 100 | 1.6 | 1.18 | 2.26 | 427 | 69.2 | 5th | 100 | 1.6 | 1.00 | 2.26 | 362 | 81.6 | So you're gaining rear wheel torque, but your cruising speed at a comfortable 4000 rpm is lower. Now, say you put both the Baker 6-speed AND the US final gearing on your bike ...
Gear | Eng Tq | x Pri Ratio | x Trans Ratio | x Final Ratio | = RW torque | Mph | 1st | 100 | 1.6 | 2.52 | 2.26 | 912 | 32.4 | 2nd | 100 | 1.6 | 1.96 | 2.26 | 710 | 41.6 | 3rd | 100 | 1.6 | 1.44 | 2.26 | 521 | 56.7 | 4th | 100 | 1.6 | 1.18 | 2.26 | 427 | 69.2 | 5th | 100 | 1.6 | 1.00 | 2.26 | 362 | 81.6 | 6th | 100 | 1.6 | 0.86 | 2.26 | 311 | 94.9 | See, now you can have your cake and eat it too! You've got the torque and the nice cruise speed. |

OK that's great. I can see from the comparisons that the US gearing gives better acceleration than the UK gearing, but the Baker 6 is identical to the US gearing, except it's got an extra cog. So tell me if I got this right, the advantage of the Baker 6 is it gives me the US gearing, ie ballistic acceleration (which I can get from a UK to US pulley swop) but it also gives me a 6th cog which will near as damn it match the UK 5th cog (which I don't get from the UK to US pulley swop). Put simply, I get to power wheelie everywhere but still cruise across the European continent when the Day of Thunder calls. Anything else I should know ? PRICE anyone ? Thanks for the formula Aaron. I suppose you know I'm gonna have to play around with the maths associated with US and UK pulley configurations now don't ya. Well, there's the US rear with the UK front and vice versa, then there's the Baker 6 to throw in , then there's the ..............oh never mind I'll have to work out the Rocket bank numbers first Rocket in England |

Arvel: You don't understand ... I live vicariously through Rocket, I'm trying to get HIM to spend the money so I don't have to! Seriously, he's got about the trickest S1W you've ever seen, he NEEDS that gearbox. Rocket: you got it! That's the downside to the US gearing, you lose the 100mph comfortable cruise mode. But with the 6-speed, you get it back! Buellistic: 30T front pulley? That's tall ... makes your final drive 61/30 = 2.03, instead of 2.26. Higher cruise speed, weaker acceleration. AW |

Aaron/Rocket, I hate to say it Rocketfella, but I think Hein's S1W is trickier. I hate him. We went for a ride yesterday to a Jap/Duc/Apr dealer. Now normally mine will get the odd look and comment from people, but yesterday it might as well have been invisible. Even the mechanics were out looking at his bike! It looks VERY cool with the RAM single-sided swingarm, it's faster than mine, he has the Technoflex suspension front and rear so it should go around corners better than mine, and it definitely should stop better than mine with those rim brakes.... I really hate him. He's built my bike. Now I have to start working on him to sell it to me for a nice cheap price, seeing all the parts are second hand now...... PPiA |

Oooooh I like that Aaron. High praise indeed. Thanks. Now about that Hein fella. Isn't he the bloke who couldn't get his "trick" S1W to Croix ? A mere 100 miles or so Nah Peter, I could've bought the RAM set-up in Metz, and as great as it is, and as great as it looks, I'm convinced I did the right thing for me. Having said that, I was "over the moon" to tell another Badweber the whereabouts of this used RAM set-up, and he duly went and bought it, via phone, without even seeing it. What balls he has, and a sizeable bank account it seems, so great luck to him and his RAM project. He's a nice, and deserving guy, aint ya Mark Anyways you one swing-armed bum bandits, I really do love the way my S1W turned out, and Hein's too, but mine's still the best, naa naa na naa na All I gotta do now is save up for a Baker 6, damn, and some new pulleys ! Oh s h i t, and I want to go to Bonneville too(with my Buell). Anyone know this weeks winning lottery numbers ? Rocket in England |
