I think I got more adventure than I bargained for today... woke up to 30's in Joshua Tree Cottonwood Campground... even the rangers told me there was a high wind advisory... twice, actually, but do I listen... no ?!? After some breakfast and clicking on the heated gear I managed to make it to Yuma, Arizona and found a cheap hotel thanks to Charles from the BRAN... I did manage to do the first dump of the bike today... Well, besides the one Reindog managed in Octillo Wells... sorry Reindog, you didn't think I would let it slip by... Learned to ride a dirt bike in Octillo Wells with help from Kathlene and Jerry... so when I got to the sand dunes and saw what looked like to me a few inches of sand on the road... I thought I could manage... wrong again... oh well, at least I got some good photos before a bunch of retired firefighters actually came to my rescue to get her back up again... Not too bad on the damage... shift toe peg bent, hard bag rear clasp twisted up, and left handlebar lever and mirror twisted up... had it checked by a local Buell guy and will ship the lever to Road Thing's I hope with help from Al at American Sport Bike... The fried clutch plates in LA is another story... for when I have a little more energy... first actual bed I get to sleep in for a week... hope to get out of Yuma tomorrow... |

I hammered out the latch on the hard bag... and got an adjustment on the handlebars at Bobby's HD in Yuma... the mechanic that looked it over said the clutch lever is no problem to ride on until I get the part shipped... which is one molded piece and not the kind you just screw in... so the bike is all good for the most part... Hey Jim, those retired firemen were not as hot as you are... but I am really glad they were there to help because with the six inches of sand on the road, I was not going to be able to pick her up, even with all the bags removed... I am limited by the weather a little bit... although I managed to stay warm when the temps dropped below freezing in JTNP on Tuesday night... by wearing most of my gear inside the down sleeping bag... my arms kept falling asleep and waking me up when I lay on my side... So, really with all that bulk I have to train myself to sleep on my back... still working on training myself to not get up to pee when I have to pee in the middle of the night... with a little success here and there... Heading to Tuscon tonight to the youth hostel there... hopefully by 12:30 or 1:00 it will warm up a little bit and the winds will have died down... Don't like spending the money to stay inside, but it is probably for the best right now with all this severe weather... With four days and nights of no cell or internet I had no idea this was coming... well, a little idea from the rangers at the park who told me wind chill was 16 degrees when standing still... DID I LISTEN ? NO, OF COURSE NOT !!! Oh well... Phoenix hostel is filled and I do not particulary care for Phoenix after spending ten weeks there in 2008... so, sorting out stuff... trying to get the sand out of everything... re-packing and checking out around 11 AM, maybe meet a badwebber for lunch and then hit the road by 12:30 or so... hope to get to Tuscon before dark tonight... |

hmm, that story sounds eerily familiar... Getting some skills on a dirtbike, then feeling that sand on the road is NOT a problem when it actually can be... A fireman there afterwards to help (the "healing shorts" finally have been retired, Jim). The good news is that you're ok, and that the parts should be going to rt today via Priority. Hope you don't have many more of those kind of adventures... Joanne |

there should be a Buell/ HD dealer in Tucson, almost on the Northern Most side of town. I cannot remember the name. Maybe he has the clutch lever..... |

Piglet seems to have an infatuation with sand and just wants to wallow in it. She has now been sprinkled with Ocotillo (and Glamis?)pixie dust in wanting to be like her dirtbike cousins. |

That shot of Piglet laying in the sand looks like a really well composed photograph. Make sure you hang on to it. |
