I found that burnouts on black tar is fun but can be costly 1/4 mile down the road. Once black tar is on your tire and your going across more while redlining at 124 mph the back wheel will spin throwing you into a wobble that you cant throttle out of and then you wake up in a field with a broken wrist wondering where your bike is so you listen for it poof its 40 feet closer to the road than you are(and thats not close to the road)! Your bike is totaled, unridable and not a house within a mile. IT SUCKS

Mike you need to sign up for a class. If you don't want to go to a beginners class pick something like Total Control this will teach you traction management. I started to teach for Lee Parks last year and work with Tracy Martin here in Maryland. Get you and your bike back together and take a class. K

Hey Babired, what kind of classes are available in MD other than the BRC? I'm in Carroll County near Westminster and would love to get some more training seat time. I've only been riding for about 15,000 miles or so, mostly the twisty backroads out near Frederick (Detour) and up through Gettysburg.

Babired,
Thanks for the info. The Total Control class looks like a winner! I'm going to give it a shot, soon as I get cash I'll be singed up!

When sportriding on curvy roads, ALWAYS look for sand in the apex of a corner. Nothing will make you low side faster than leaning heavy into a turn and hitting sand. Take an outside line around the curve for safety. For now, slow down. I have learned this lesson watching the broken shoulders of others.

Another point not mentioned in books. When following a vehicle (especially a pickup truck with high clearance), get behind his wheels and do not drive behind the center of the vehicle. If the vehicle in front of you encounters a rock in the middle of the road, he will drive over it with no problem but you will suddenly have a rock "magically" appear in front of you. This happened to us on a "clean" road and that rock took out three tires of two motorcycles. The corollaries are you shouldn't be in the middle of the lane anyway because that is where oil on the road accumulates and you shouldn't be riding too close to the vehicle in front of you. But exuberance sometimes happens even when one is careful.

ALWAYS wear your full face helmet if you are in a no helmet law state. No exceptions.
