Court, I agree with Jb2 that I always visit "your" site as well. Really enjoy the images...and the stories, real or imagined, that are behind them. |

Okay . . . since some of you asked. . . I do get to see a lot in any given day. Here are some from Monday. Ignore the "Building" pictures. . . they're here just for fun. They are from a "Buildings and Laundromats" project I am working on . . . enjoy. I'll try to slip back and add some titles and explanations. . . see if you can pick out the "School of Urban Graffiti"?

>>>>to this day i am still honored that you trusted me enough to place that handsome young man's life in my hands. Gads. . . I still laugh about you and Erik taking him with you. To this day he's follow our advise and not shared details. That was the day you hit the major rock "at velocity". He's quite a guy. . . . just bought a home in Pasadena and has a cute corner office in Beverly Hills. At 27 he just became the youngest VP in his company (33 was the prior) . . . gads. . do I sound like a proud papa??? Stacy is knockin'em dead as well . . .8 years of a 4.0 and she's an energy trader in Pasadena. Glad I'm a construction guy and don't have to compete with them!

Actually the "hearth" is Jack's (Vickie's cousins" office in Brooklyn . . . the place is spectacular and will likely be the subject of some future photos. He owns a large warehouse on Pier 41 in Red Hook. It used to be one of the crummy area and is not the "New Williamsburg" with the QEII docking there weekly. His office looks out at the Statue of Liberty and in fact is the closest you can get on land. He built the huge fireplace in his office. . . I have an office there where I do my consulting and writing. Blake and FMJH can tell you that Jack is a great friend to have in New York City. Remind me to tell you that Tao story. . . |

Another day . . . trying out a new lens . . . most the shots near the house, the ones of the bridge and the city are from the house. St. Johns and Wagner College (you've seen the movie "A Beautiful Mind" are right down the street. . . Silver Lake Park is about a block away, next to the golf course, (see photos above) for those of you are are feeling bad for Henrik and I in NYC. Show a few moto-fotos cause I know you guys dig this stuff. . . I went to pick up my "other bike" today and the dealer was having their catered monthly parking lot deal . . demo rides and the works. Folks come from far away once a month. There is nothing you can do to improve a motorcycle than sell it through a quality dealer. Kind of neat . . . I wrote the $1,534 check to pick up my bike . . Brian, the service dude rides it out, takes the invoice and personally checks each item to see it was done and done right. He found one thing, a sticky petcock they'd replaced and he didn't like the feel of the new one. . . "it'll work fine, but it's a little tough which tells me it can't be doing the seals in there any good. Leave it, I'll put another new one in that works right and we'll deliver the bike on Tuesday. Cool stuff. . . here's a glimpse at NYC today . . .

Ahhh . . . yes. Thank you for the reminder. I've two bikes to pick up later today. I mean these babies are toast! But I get two pieces of toast and two clear titles. I've got access to some "fun" parts . . . how about a KLR with full Ohlins suspension. . . about 70RWHP and . . . well. . . start your imagination. . . it'll take me a while to get them stripped and start sorting them out. |

Just looked that D3 up, and all I can say is "It's about time". (I of course could not even *begin* to afford one... but I got tired of seeing those punk Cannons being better cameras ). (And I have the punk Fuji that can do a non trivial part of what that Nikon can do (usable 3200 ASA) but for $250... ) Yummm... Nikon D3, 2400 ASA, with the ability to use F1.7 or F2 lenses... slap a 23mm effective wide angle on there and go work a room... ***Oh*** the pictures I could get.... |

Only in New York
quote:Pair wheel dead man through streets in check-cash bid MARCUS FRANKLIN • The Associated Press • January 9, 2008 NEW YORK (AP) - Two men were arrested yesterday after wheeling a dead man through the streets in an office chair to a check-cashing store and trying to cash his Social Security check, police said. David J. Dalaia and James O'Hare pushed Virgilio Cintron's body from the Manhattan apartment O'Hare and Cintron shared about a block away to Pay-O-Matic, spokesman Paul Browne said witnesses told police. "The witnesses saw the two pushing the chair with Cintron flopping from side to side and the two individuals propping him up and keeping him from flopping from side to side," Browne said. The men left Cintron's body outside the store, went inside and tried to cash his $355 check, Browne said. The store's clerk, who knew Cintron, asked the men where he was, and O'Hare told the clerk they would go and get him, Browne said. A police detective who was having lunch at a restaurant next to the check-cashing store noticed a crowd forming around Cintron's body and "it's immediately apparent to him that Cintron is dead," Browne said. The detective called uniformed New York Police Department officers at a nearby precinct. Emergency Medical Services technicians arrived as O'Hare and Dalaia were preparing to wheel Cintron's body into the check-cashing store, Browne said. Police arrested Dalaia and O'Hare at the store, he said. Cintron's body was taken to a hospital morgue. The medical examiner's office told police it appeared Cintron, 66, died from natural causes within the previous 24 hours, Browne said. "He was deceased in the apartment when he was removed by these two," Browne said. Dalaia and O'Hare, both 65, were being held by police and faced check fraud charges, Browne said. A telephone number listed for Cintron at the apartment he shared with O'Hare went unanswered last night. Police said they didn't have an address for Dalaia or attorney information for him or O'Hare.

I found it interesting that, in the copy of Popular Photography that arrived yesterday, one of the top new products is Kodak's "new and improved" TMax 400 black and white film. It is supposed to be ultra low grain. We shall see. |

Kodak has just released a couple of improved films. One of the improvements is a surface that allows better scanning. I don't think film is dead just yet. Particularly in the low light situations or where you need very high resolutions at decent ISO speeds (medium format stuff) film is still very useful. The medium format digital stuff is just so pricey as are any 35mm type cameras that have reasonable noise at 1600 ISO and above. I can get a much better image in very low light with my Leica M2 than I can with my EOS XTI. |

I agree Dave. There is one point and shoot that does low light adequately, the Fuji F31FD (about the same as the F30). Under $300, 6MP, and shoots pretty well at 1600 ASA, and usably at 3200 ASA. I would compare it favorably to Tmax (the old stuff) in terms of artifacts at equivelent ISO's. Unfortanely, as right as Fuji got it by using their big SLR image sensor in a small body, and reconfiguring it for more light sensitivity rather then more resolution, they did not follow through with the lens. So it's still an F2.8 or something. They got other things right, from cold start to picture acquisition is very fast, under 2 seconds I think. Even without pre-focus, it will go from warm to image capture in under a second. With pre-focus (push button half way down), it will capture the image instantaneously. Getting action shots is just as easy as my old SLR. It is 3" by 2" by 3/4 inch, very light, very durable, and runs for like 500 shots on a single battery charge. It will do 640x480 video (with sound) with good sensitivity as well (though it chews memory quickly). Oh to have that camera, still in an exceptionally small point and shoot form factor, with a switchable fixed focal length 23mm effective F1.2 and 70mm effective F3.5 or something. And use a memory format other then XD, so you can put an 8 gig card in there. *That* would be the modern replacement for a Leica. I'd love the digital rebel with some good glass, but even if I had one, I think I would still want that dream Fuji for slipping in a pocket and discrete shooting. Here is an ASA3200. Not perfect for sure, but more then good enough for a family album, or even an 8x10 for a wall somewhere that you won't be pressing your nose up against it. Note that this shot was taken in what was effectively night time in the city... look at how bright the street lights look in the background.
Here is 1600, again not perfect, but much better then a picture ruined by a flash, or ruined because a big expensive camera just somehow seems to never be with you when you need it.
If only they would give me better glass, and two fixed focal lengths with smaller f-stops... or even just the 23mm fixed. Yum. (Message edited by reepicheep on January 15, 2008) |
