S3 on the West Side Highway

I took this yesterday. IF . . . just IF those are brown socks with black shoes I am going to have to ask you to return your Buell to East Troy and buy a BMW.

I tell ya . . . twice a week I'm seeing it . . . crazy dudes on bikes splittin' lanes.

The UJM's lead the way . . . stunting in traffic, in NYC, is rolling the dice. . . . This ain't L.A.

The fella on the S3 needs a BMW. Looks like he's sat on a toy.

Those Brutales are as common as muck too. I've decided, no Brutale for me. At least for now. I've decided to go down the root of proper rare. Like, you know, no one else will have one of these. The product of burning midnight oil, so to speak.

Remind me to show you sometime.

Did the S3 ever come with brown / bronze rims?

I don't recall ever seeing a Buell with that color rims before.

I walked out of my office 20 minutes ago. . . I'm heading the the car and notice the streets full of smoke, people screaming and running . . . why is it the LAST thing I thought of was a fire?

It'll be an interesting weekend for sure with the Fleet in town . . .

This picture, which I can see out the kitchen window, is one of two identical ships parked along side each other. After the U.S.S. Cole you should see the ring around them out in the harbor!

Ship

Unmarked Car

The new unmarked 500HP Chryslers are fairly easy to hide unless you catch the take down light and the 5 covert antenna on the trunk lid

Unmarked Blimp

However an unmarked blimp full of electronic sensors is a bit tougher to hide . . . frankly . . if you wanted to hid a blimp wouldn't you plaster GOODYEAR or BUELL all over it? Maybe it's just me . .

Quick question. My route back from Maine will take me down I-95 right through NY. I would kind of like to see the Big Apple. What is the traffic like?

Actually . . on a serious note . . . well, it's New York City. It's one of the busiest cities in the world and one of the most dangerous to drive in.

If you are going to ride a motorcycle through.

  • PLAN YOUR ROUTE - New York and New Jersey have notoriously poor signage. You may be looking for the Staten Island Expressway and not know it as I-278. If you are from the Dallas Area (where I-35 is always" called, but not marked as, "Stemmons", you'll understand.
  • KNOW THE RULES - Motorcycles can use the H.O.V. lanes. On a bike it won't impact if, but if you are in a car/SUV with commercial plates, be sure you understand what a "Parkway" is.
  • PLAN AHEAD - I come from Kansas. You miss an exit, you get off at the next one, zap back over the highway (typical "trumpet" geometry) jump back on and return. There is no place in the area of NYC this works. I was jabbering one day, blew my exit from the BQE into Astoria and ended up having to cross the Tri-Boro only to find the exits in the South Bronx didn't have corresponding entry spots . . .I added 90 minutes to my commute and an exciting incursion into the South Bronx. Bad deal.
  • DRIVE DEFENSIVELY - they knock folks (you may have seen some of my photos) off motorcycles here with impunity and total disregard. They just don't care.
  • DON'T SPLIT LANES - I love to lane spilt. I always said I wouldn't do it and one afternoon, aboard a CB-1 and a day on an S-1 made me a believer. I love watching it in London. New York City is neither L.A. (where it's legal and expected) nor the UK where it's legal and not only expected but in some ways nearly required. Riders in both places are also better. Here the risk/benefit equation is not in your favor.
  • AVOID RUSH HOUR - common sense. Don't run out and pick up the one you dubbed off the tee of the driving range while everyone else is hitting. It's a matter of probability.
  • ASK DIRECTIONS - I have yet to encounter a New Yorker (go figure) who has been anything but polite and accomadating when I ask directions. CAVEAT: I maybe should point out that I was asking directions (on an M-2) to the World Trade Center not knowing I had my right foot on the sidewalk 20' from the face of the building. . . long story, I'm no Magellan.

The GOOD NEWS is that NYC can be a FUN place to ride. My personal favorite is the late night ride for coffee and cheesecake. Best done under the light of a full moon.

Let me know if you get this way. . . . I've got plenty of wheels and my riding partner (in a fit of craziness" bought his 2nd DR-Z400 this week, so he now has a "spare".

Bottom line is . . . BE CAREFUL.

I won't bore you with the details (they are already in "Long distance rides on your buell"), but I will be heading back to Indiana from Maine in the first week of July. Heading there I will be taking 2-laners, but heading back will be all interstate/turnpike. I am from San Diego, where we do have traffic, but I doubt it is anything like New York. I have some wiggle room in my schedule, so I have the option of taking the long way around, or finding a coffee-house to wait out the worst of it. I once hit a traffic-jam in LA at 2:00am on a Wednesday.

Picking up on one of your other points, a recent study published in Readers Digest (at least that is where I read it) found that New York city was the most courteous big city in the world. Mumbai, India was the worst.

New York City, based on a very informal poll of our international guests last Christmas, is one of the friendliest of cities. I was living in Coronado (the Coronado Shores high rise next to the Del across from Glorietta Bay) in 1976 during the Pete Wilson "America's Best City" celebration . . . San Diego, at least then, was the same type of atmosphere.

Keep me posted on your date and perhaps we can arrange to get you into the city during mid-day . . . we'll hook up for lunch or something and then point you out before the afternoon hoopla . .

It's actually kinda cool to see and if you'd like I can plot you a "fun" route that'd get you the most Gotham Eye Candy!

If you've ridden in San Diego, you'll catch on quick.

P.S. - Not sure about the "Gunslinger" deal but be acutely aware, if you do carry, of NYC (CITY, not state) CC regs. They are like, and as a result thereof not reciprocal with, nothing else in the world.

Just a "heads up".

I should be going through there around the 5th or 6th of July. I will not know the exact day until... well...the 5th or 6th of July. I am trying not to over-plan this trip.

My mother still lives in San Diego. She loves the Hotel Del Coronado. She also remembers when the El Cortez was the tallest building in the city.

I picked up the Gunslinger call-sign in Afghanistan about five years ago. I should probably drop it, but I have seen to many westerns.

Nuts: I am sorry; we ended up getting swamped on the weekend but man o' man you could not have picked a nicer weekend to spend in New York City! Unbelievable or what? I hope you had a blast visiting your family and it was great getting a chance to talk to you. Keep me posted when you plans bring you back. .

Gunslinger . . . ask your Mother if she remembers sitting in the rooftop bar of the El Cortez reading the writing on the landing gear of planes on final for Lindbergh Field.

Before I moved over to Coronado I had an awesome place across the street from Balboa Park.

Later a friend of my Father's, who was enjoying some success with his fast food restaurants (McDonalds. . you may have heard of them) had received a gift of a huge condo in the Coronado Shores from a Mexican investment group enticing him to do business with them.

Dad and Wade were in Rancho Santa Fe playing golf and I met them one evening for dinner. Wade asked where I lived and I told him I had a little dump near the park (you remember what a "Murphy Bed" is?)

Anyway . . . he laughs and says "look I only use this place twice a year. Why don't you just use it and you can find a place to stay for the 2 weeks a year I'm hear". With that I became the poorest resident of one of the highest rolling luxury places in Southern Cal in 1976.

There was, at that time, still a toll on the Coronado Bay Bridge (you do recall the ferry that docked at Orange Avenue right? : ) ) and between the ferry and tipping Robbie the doorman my $472/month PFC earnings were pretty well spoken for.

But, in those days it took only about $7 a week to have a great time in the San Diego area. It was 1976, when Bauer and Hudson were the big thing on KFMB, that the Over-The-Line tournament began.

San Diego is an off the charts GREAT CITY!

I still love San Diego, and still consider it my home town (so does my wife, that's where I found her). I can remember toll on the Coronado Bridge, but the ferry was long gone when I was a kid. I have come close to moving back a number of times. If it were just me it would have happened a long time ago. Being a responsible adult sucks sometimes. It may also surprise you to find out that is has not gotten any cheaper to live there in the last 30 years. You certainly won't find any 3400 sq.ft. houses in upscale neighborhoods for under $250K. I do miss scuba diving, surfing, real Mexican food, and being able to ride all year.

Great, you made remember how much I hate my job. How much worse could it be working for my father-in-law in San Diego?
