The SCAB (Southern california Area Buellers) group does a semi-organized ride on the first sunday of odd months. The destination for today's ride was Willow Springs Raceway. There is a big track there (the one that Slaughter is up close and personal with ), and a smaller but cooler track there called the Streets of Willow, and today was the Streets motorcycle series race day. One of the official Buell track days this year is on the Streets there, and several of us are signed up for that track day, so we thought we'd go out there and scope it out for a couple hours and then go ride the twisties in the nearby Green Valley area. It was a beautiful SoCal day, a bit windy but as clear as you'll ever see it here. Reindog, Ebear, Bertman, and I met on the LA side of the San Gabriel mountains, and went to the track across Angeles crest/Angeles Forest roads. These are great roads but usually over-patrolled, so it's hard to have too much fun there. But other than some cops escorting some torch carrier on some relay thing, we only saw one other cop so we had a spirited ride to the track. We met Glen (Uibear) and Wayne (98S1lightning) there at the track, and got there just in time to see James Provo and Chris Matty come of the track in their first race. Eric started chatting with this friendly lady named Stephanie that turned out the be the track manager. Eric was talking about going uphill over the third track there (Horse Thief Mile) to take some pictures of the track. No one was runing on Horse Thief mile today, and Stephanie offered not only to unlock the gate to the area above the track, but she said that if we "were good", that she would unlock the gate to the track so we all could ride on the track for a while. She was so nice. We had a good hour of spirited riding on the track, with no supervision and no others other than the 6 of us. No bike prep, no rules other than to "be good, and to lock the gate when we left". WOOO HOO!!! What a hoot. We all had our fill on the track there and we even had a spirited ride back to civilization on the twisties at the east end of the San Gabriels near Wrightwood. It was about as perfect day of motorcyling as you're likely to get. Eric has some pictures he'll likely post. The Horse Thief mile track is the middle top in this picture:

You guys really missed out, you coulda seen me whippin up on some ULY butt on an old POS S3 w/bags, it was great. Later that night on speed vision they had a show called the set up w/ Tommy Kinddel, its a show sponcered by Pontiac and they go to different tracks in Pontiacs Solstice and race them w/ regular people driving. My point is that they were racing @ willow on the same track we ran yesterday and you could have seen it, not to rub it in.........well maybe a little. |

For Wayne and I it was mostly superslabing for an hour and a quarter to get there. The last bit, Willowsprings Road, is more fun, especially when you get to watch Wayne try to remember how to get to the race track! It was great to see Al, Ebear,Bertman and Reindog again, watch a little racing, and do a little of our own! Very nice people running the track and a great day, not to hot or windy. The Horse Thief Mile is all tight turns, short straights and steep up and down. My first time ever on a road race track and it was a lot of fun. |

That my friend is a date, I have 3, witch would you like to borrow? Keep in mind that the XB is a bit hurt @ the moment, the S1 might be a bit much bike for an old guy like you, would'nt want the power to scare you, hahahahaha, but you can use the S3 any time you like. Hey, why you start picking on the rookie anyway? Man Glenn I had no idea that the bags were that close to the ground, those are great pics. Hey Ferris, you can use this if you like...............

So, they let you on the track without tech inspection and gear? Was this some kind of favor from a friend or something? OK, I'm an idiot. I guess I should have read the back story first. That is amazing. Even with no one no the track, that is awesome. You guys are so lucky. (Message edited by jandj_davis on May 10, 2007) |

Just hangin' out. Had a great time meeting and riding with old friends. Now as far as that EX-local goes, I think that if you had some titanium skid plates on bob, Wayne might have a hard time getting by you. |
