H -- yessir -- the heater is run til the joint gets toasty-oasty, and is shut off before long-chain hydrocarbons are deployed -- having been blowed up real good once or twice, I am uninterested in repeating the experience I, too, am looking forward to putting things back together -- so much more satisfying, ain't it? |

... so much more satisfying, ain't it? Sure is - of course you need to get through the disassembly/clean-up/figure out tweaks and custom mods and mounting first ... I honestly think I enjoy the farkling part of motorcycling almost as much as the riding. Not quite, but it sure is a big part of it for me Henrik |

Help-- I've been caught up in mission creep and can't get out! Well -- what started as a simple major cleanup, regear, and tune has lead, in no particular order, to a top end job, displacement increase (1203 to 1250), XB heads, cams, powder coating of the frame, new wheels, rewiring, and a buncha other things I'm sure I'm forgetting -- while farkling may be fun (and, as Henrik says, of course it is), this thing has developed a mind of it's own! luckily, I'm out of town on bidness for a week, or I'd discover something else to order parts for -- phew -- by the time I get back, I'll have enough days left to put everything back together and NOT to do anymore planning/daydreaming/what-iffing! this is gonna be fun -- |

Jerry, If you time it right you can travel between winter storms and have clear blue skies and bare dry pavement the whole way. Here's to good thoughts and a good trip. thx, Mike!
Ironman! Safe journey -- it may be prudent to keep the coordinates of the new Dome kinda hushed up -- either that, lay back, think of England, and open a B&B for wayward riders . . . . the Blue Ridge Parkway - can't miss us!!!
Brynn 'n me, San Bernardino, CA, last Friday night. WOOHOO!!! FB |

Mission Creep - know all about it, but have no guaranteed way to ward it off. I have a leaking fork seal on the SV, and before I knew it I had an '05 GSXR fork, Yamaha radial brakes, Suzuki 750 LE front wheel with the *nice* rotors in the garage - 'cause the way to fix a leaking fork seal is to buy close to $500 worth of replacement parts A week off can be both a good and a bad thing; either time and therefore hopefully thoughts off the project or time away to think up more things that "need" to be done The tough thing is when you go: "well if I have to do this, then I might as well do that ....". That's a slippery slope that ... Henrik |

Good luck, Jerry. You will have to send me real estate links/brochures for the area as it is not to long to retirement time and I need a vacation spot/home for wayward bikers. |

JB -- congratulations on the major wonderful event in your family's life -- what fun! Henrik -- right as rain -- while sitting in the hotel after finishing work (I love working for a company with employees every continent but one -- potential phone conversations alla time!), I found myself doodling a new headlight mount -- clearly, the stocker MUST be replaced, as it serves the purpose very well, is light weight, and not at all unlovely -- an obvious candidate for deep-sixing . . . . |

funny how everything looks top notch, works excellent, and fits the bill to a tee, so much so that we must be changing it... |

It's been 22 days since Bomber has last left the garage. Let's all hope he didn't bring too much scotch in with him. Otherwise, the Ma Duece might end up with a 180 front tire and a 120 rear: How's the progress? |

For a serious salt bike you need skinny tires esp in front for less rolling resistance--and don't forget the ceramic bearings!! |

LOL -- I did escape the entropy lab, briefly, for a sojourn south of the border -- did wolrd's for my world view, if not much for the project ;-} it's coming along well, thanks -- it'd be done, if not for my poor project managment skills, which lead to ordering parts in the wrong order ;-} |

You guys keep that cold and snow stuff--it's been in 70's here. Been playing catch up on all old projects as I wait for engine and chassis to be done. Down to last piece of vintage junk dropped off by my dear brother, got it running this weekend. May go into withdrawals without grease under my nails. |

so, it's been a long far since the last installment of this tale -- things have not been completely stalled, however, and progress has been made Under the general category of "learn from my mistakes, make your own," comes the following: practice good [project management skills. Make a list of the needed stuff, and then get it. while I knew, pretty much, what was needed, I bought the expensive stuff first (entirely cuz I had the dough that week). While this may have been good planning (the money can't evaporate if I've alrady bought the jugs, pistons, cams and the like), it did leave me lacking a few small items (had all the gaskets but one to assemble the cam chest) check stuff as it arrives -- just cuz the box says it's aleft handed framus meant to fit an XYZ doens't mean that it is! one framus looks pretty much like another to a person that's filling a bunch of orders, and Murphey never, ever sleeps if you work in a moral equivalent to the Entropy Lab, figure about 20% of your time going toward looking for the framus installer, which, of course, will be useless once you realize the framus in your hand will not fit. this percentage will start out smaller, but grow over time until you can no longer find the door to the shop -- at that point, you'll put your tools away, allowing you to find them, and you'll also organize your new parts in such a manner that you can't find the thing you want to install, assuming that it'll fit. if the task you are trying to complete is one you've done, but not for 30 years, figure that it's the first time, and triple the amount of time needed to complete the task. random observation -- sporty motors are simple, and easy to work on they were also designed when shop labor was relatively cheap, cheaper than R&D time. the amount of fiddling required to properly install the four cams (oooooo, sounds zommy, don't it?) would have any recently gradutated manufacturing process engineer frothing at the mouth. but, tradition is strong in Milwaukee, and, hey, the tooling is paid for ;-} (note to anyone that needs the note -- this should not be misconstrued at a slag at sporty motors, HDI, the state of Wisconsin, the City of Milwuakee, or the original designer of the XL engine.) at about 60K miles, I was disturbed to find a fair maount of wear on the cam followers and lobs. hmmmmmmmm the lobs had a 64th inch worn in em by the followers, and the followers looked OK-ish -- happily, the highly-suspect oil pump drive gear looked as if it had been removed from the hobbing machine moments before, but I installed the new bronze version anywho the inside of the stock cyliders looked fine, but there was a fair amount of cruddy, oily deposti on the tops of the pistons.
given all this, I'm surprised at how well the Madeuce was runnin when I took it down last fall . . . . . the new version (1250 kit, XB heads, and Andrews N8 cams) should be big fun, indeed. |

"... moral equivalent to the Entropy Lab..." That would be the garage/barn/bike & tractor shed at el ranchito chingadero! Local raccoons learned this weekend that I keep deer corn and catfish chow in paper sacks in the shed. They made themselves right at home. Put muddy pawprints all over the Road Pig, too. Now my 'coons will be growing antlers and gills... Next weekend I may deal harshly with the little bastids. Or at least shut the door when I leave for the night! rt |
