Okay. .. you asked for it. I get sent out for a bloomin 2 hours and just happened : ) to have a camera with me.

Take a look at a "normal" day in New York City and you'll see why several million tourists a month swarm this place.

1 - Coast Guard

One or two days a week, these are the guys who escort me to work. I have several bomb sniffing labs with me and these guys will race along side and stick with us all the way to Whitehall, sometimes on both sides of the boat. I made faces and waved my camera at them. . . my wife is waiting for them to appear at the door

2 - Stink Shoe

Talk about "sniffing". . I get in the office, open the paper and see this. No rally, in Vermont they have a contest....I'm glad I am in dull ol' New York City!

3-Uh...well, not entirely dull

Uh...well, not entirely dull! The sidewalks, owing to some goofy contest were packed with goofballs.....then down the block was this.

4-Horns in Window

Cool Stuff. . ."Guitar Row". . . could be called Guitar, Flute, Trombone, Trumpet, Clavinet, Drum and about 35 other instruments ROW

5- More Horns

You bet Wynton shops here

6-Les Pauls

I've never owned a Les Paul, but man oh man what a piece of a legend Les Paul is

quote:

LATEST: Pneumonia didn't keep guitar great LES PAUL from a Los Angeles tribute concert on Tuesday night (07FEB06) - even though he was in his sickbed in New Jersey at the time.

Paul, 90, was taken to hospital last Friday (03FEB06) and had to cancel his live appearance at an all-star jam session with the likes of SLASH and JOE PERRY.

But he didn't want to let his peers and fans down, so he was beamed to the bash via satellite.

Paul, who suffers from arthritis and hearing problems, is expected to be released from hospital tomorrow (10FEB06), when he hopes to celebrate his double Grammy Awards win from last night (08FEB06).

7-More Les, More or Less

More Les's . . . More or less. : )

8-Gibson SG's and Thunderbird

I'm still ticked I sold my first Gibson, with the amp no less, for $100. It's worth about $1,500 today

9 - Gretsch

I've got a funny Gretsch story. Vick's brother took guitar lessons for all of a month when he was a kid. So a while back, he tells me he thinks he still has an "old guitar" somewhere. Well, like the Corvette in the barn , story he digs around and pulls a pristine Country Gentleman (white one right smack in the middle of the picture) from the closet. I'm now trying to convince him he couldn't play then; he can't play now. . give it to me!

10-Awesome Gretsch

Some folks REALLY like Gretsch guitars. . go figure

11-Manny's pictures

There are acres of wall space covered in these pictures. Last week, from Conan O'Brien, "Manny, thanks for the killer amps. My neighbors below hate you"

12-Pearl

They've all been there. . ..

13-Jimi

Here's a guy who practiced in a garage, then ran into the studio to do the take to save money.

14-SRV

EXCALIBUR. . . as a Strat guy, I stand here and drool

15-John Lennon

One of the most requested spots, when I take folks on tours of the city is Strawberry Fields. I'm still lusting over a Gibson John Lennon PEACE

16-Hershey's

Oh yeah. . now that I am an hour late and only actually bought a handful of pics and a book of mandolin chords. . nearly forget, I've a meeting to go to.

17-Radio City

I know....I've posted these before. I think it's just the colors that appeal to me.

18-Radio City

David Gilmour...okay, I'll stop with the Radio City

19-Empty Ice

Walking to meet my wife. . this is about 1 second before 6:00 O'Clock when they unleash the little heathens!

20 Shopping Problem - Saks

It's not so much WHAT this is that bothers me. . .

21-Wife v. Saks

It's WHERE it is that kills me. . .

22 - Is it real or is it . . .?

Is it real or is it . . they pay a fortune to have these windows done like every 10 days. The world's most expensive window space

Oh well . . . that's Wednesday. . .

Hey Court..

In you're humble estimation.. Would you place Les Paul in the same category as say.. Erik Buell? Heck, there is a similarity in stories and contributions to their crafts, don't you think?

Les Paul, the Erik Buell of Music.. or, should that be.. Erik Buell, the Les Paul of Motorcycles?

They both also have ties to Wisconsin. ;)

I still need to get a pic of the S2 in front of the Les Paul tribute sign in Waukesha. (Assuming I can find the sign again.)

I could sure draw some strong parallels between Erik Buell and Les Paul.

Both, in their respective crafts, have shown a rare gift of vision, being able to see past what is and visualize what is possible.

I have, on the wall of my office, a copy of Les Paul's original hand sketched patent application. He and Erik, a strong case can be made, share a common gift of being not only keen innovators, but credible artists.

I've made it a point, living a stone's throw from where Les performs every Monday, of seeing him every chance I get. If you need another common trait between Paul and Buell, it would undoubtedly be there shared affinity for being close to those who's lives they touch. Les Paul fights (see the article quoted above) to get close, I mean REALLY close, to his fans.

The last time Colin and I went to see him, we were seated next to the stage as Les, Frank Vignola (see also) and Lou Pollo did their thing. It was cosmic feeling Paul's tapping foot hitting my elbow rested on the stage at the Iridium.

Over the years, he plays a bit less, jokes a bit more (he's REALLY funny) and has boundless energy.

Yeah. . . the more I think about it, you may be on to something.

I posted up in the storm fronts for NJ because I didn't see a NY, NY page, but I didn't get any responses. My girlfriend and I are planning to move to NYC, and I am trying to decide if I should take my bike or not. We are thinking about living in Manhattan, but we are also going to look in some of the other areas outside of Manhattan. Pretty much I've been told that if I live outside of Manhattan I should take a car and my bike, and if we live in Manhattan I shouldn't bother. Any thoughts from those that know?

MAny folks in Manhattan do not own a car. . . I have friends who have never driven a car.

A car in Manhattan is like carrying a shotput in a 100 yard dash. Owning one is cool if you are okay with, in my case, the $29 of daily tolls, 98 minutes each way to work and paying $450 a month for parking. I took my son to dinner a while back at China Grill and the parking was $58 for two hours...of course, it was AFTER I paid that my son pointed out we could have legally parked on the street.

I am presently, in my current gig, doing the daily public transportation thing. I drive 2 miles, park my car in a large and comfy "Texas" style lot (that means the lines are 10", not 6' apart), take a leisurly walk to the boat, cruise to Wall Street and take the 4 Train a couple stops. Neat, clean and easy. I respond to e-mails and read on the 25 minute trip. A major "paradigm shift" for a Kansan who used to collect cars and motorcycles.

Public transporation in NYC is fabulous and you can get anywhere easily.

I have friends who ride their bikes to work daily. This requires either a "throw away" bike (I personally reccommend the KLR650) that's cheap to ride, insure and offers good (tall seat height) forward visibility. You'll need to learn a sort of defensive driving few can imagine, but it's doable. The other alteranative, as in the case of my riding partner, is to have secure company parking.

Anyway .... that's it in a nutshell .... opinions will vary with personal expereinces.

Some Doctors in town don't even own vehicles, they just have friends who do.

: )

Not entirely a bad thing......

James; I'd say bring the bike for fun, but expect to pay a hefty price for decent parking. Particularly if you insist on living in Manhattan. *Very* expensive there. Last I heard a price you were looking at about $1800/month for a 600 sq. ft. "1 bedroom" (i.e. converted small studio) on the ground floor. A bike parking spot in a garage can run you $150 - 200/month. Few garages will let you work on the bike. There is an MC only parking garage in Lower Manhattan, but that's the only one I know of.

Price wise you will get *a lot* more for your $$ if you move outside Manhattan. Queens is not the hippest, but there are nice and less expensive neighborhoods. Astoria comes to mind. Brooklyn is pretty cool, but has been "hip" for years and the prices match the "hipness."

Public transportation is excellent as long as you're within walking distance from a subway stop. Keep in mind that even if you live in Manhattan you will be doing some commuting, and if you live/work on opposite sides (east/west) of Manhattan, it can take you awhile to get back and forth.

As Court hinted at, I don't own a car. I'd love to, but for the little I'd use it, I'm much better off just renting when I need it. That way I'm not bothered with alternate side parking regulations, payments, insurance etc. etc.

I'd suggest taking a close look at the MTA subway map for NYC:

http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/

as well as detailed borough maps and then go apartment hunting in the areas where you'll have easy access to the subway. Keep in mind that the G and the 7 trains suck!

If you need more information, just ask.

>>>Astoria comes to mind.

Astoria, a neighborhood I am very familiar with having worked there for the last 4 years, is THE place to be.

Willamsburg, Long Island City and most the areas of Brooklyn have "hipped up" in price as Henrik mentioned.

I'd suggest somewhere down off of 20th Avenue and within 4 or 5 blocks of 31st Street. That places you within easy walking distance of the last stop of the N Train and lots of great shopping.

I've got spare, current version, subway maps here. If you want me to send you one marked up with the places we're talking about just drop me a note.

Thanks for the input guys! I sent you a PM Court. If you guys come across anything that you might think would be of interest to me please send it to me at james_olin@hotmail.com . We aren't going to be moving very soon, but we are planning to do a lot of research between now and when we leave so we can make the best decision. We are looking at August of 07 for our move date so we can both put in a little more time at our current jobs and save some money. I do HR for a roofing manufacturing company here in KC and my girlfriend works for a Financail Planning Firm. From what we can tell there is a ton of opportunity around the NYC area for both of us! I lived in Chicago for two years, and I grew up in Southern California, so I do have experience with bigger cities. I do however know that NYC is an animal all it's own. We are not stuck on Manhattan or any other area for that matter, but from my Chicago experience I know that I want to live in the city somewhere. While I was up there I lived in the burbs and always wanted to live in the city, so I don't want to do that a second time. I'm starting to think that I'm going to want to take the bike and just sell my car. By the time we move I'll be about 5K ahead on the car, so that will help with the move and any time that one of us doesn't have a job. Kind of drives me nuts to sell the car when I'll be less than a year away from having it paid off, but it seems like the better choice. Thanks again guys!

Well...if you wonder what NYC looks like in the morning, he's a pic I took from the kitchen, right before walking out the door this morning.

Sunrise on Tuesday 03.28.06

Henrik and I both came here, fell in love and stayed. It's an absolutely incredible town which goes to explain why MILLIONS of people come here each month to visit....

I've been, aboard a Buell, in 44 states and lived in a couple. NYC, to me at this time, is it! We're already looking at hideaways for when it's time to step off the track the rat race runs on...but if it's opportunity you seek...this is the place!

Do I need to clarify, for those new to Badweb, that Henrik and I, although dandy friends, did not fall in love with each other?

The more I read that . . . the more it confuses even me!

James; keep in mind, that 4 of the 5 boroughs in NYC would, if they were cities by themselves, be in the top ten of the largest US cities. So no matter where you go in NYC, it can be a bit "suburban", but it will still very much be *city*, and because of the public transportation, you're within striking distance of almost anywhere else in the city ... if that makes sense.

There are web sites with apartment listings. Take a look at prices and locations, and it will begin to paint a picture of where you can and would like to live. That combined with some bus and subway research will put you well on the way.

If any particular areas seem to emerge, feel free to drop a line, and I'll see what I can dig up if I'm not directly familiar with the area.

Was in NYC for New Year's 89/90 staying with a buddy in Alphabet City, 11th between Ave A and Ave B.... This was at the height of health infrastructure and facility cutbacks, closures and it's inevitable human fall-out, etc....

Was struck by the homeless population living in Tomken's Square... Striking human tragedy... Thought to photograph the park and it's inhabitants...

Few months later listening to the radio on the way home from work and they're interviewing a photographer who's just published a book featuring a series of black and white's called "Architecture of Despair" taken - you know where... Tomken's Square.
