Hey Court, Was speaking with a friend the other day who likes to carry his camera everywhere (to VERY good effect) and he told me about his newest Nikon lens which is an 18-200 3.5-4.5 that features anti-vabration technology. The cool thing about this lens.... is that you can shoot hand held at 1/15 or so and it looks like it was taken at 1/250! Like having a 1.4 lens for a fraction of the cost! I'd love to know how that technology works. It's been around for awhile in binoculars and maybe other applications, too. Let's face it, a 1.4 lens' primary virtue is not to reduce depth of field, it's to get that shot in subdued light at a manageable shutter speed. Check out his photoblog. I wasn't aware of an 18-200 but this is the Nikon lens I got just prior to Daytona. It has the Silent Wave internal focusing, ED glass and VR (Vibration Reduction). In addition, it does some pretty neat tracking and is even smart enough that it "ignores" things that get in the way while you are panning and continues to track a moving object. The single thing that impressed me the most was that the pictures were crystal clear. I have the high end AF/D 24-85mm that I "wear" daily and the BIG lens was noticeably cleaner. The lesson I learned, and your PRO friend already knows, is that a $1700 Pro lens is TONS better than the Nikon $300 telephoto.  | ||

The thing that Gary's marveling at with his 18-200 VR lens is that he can get 1.4 type results for a fraction of the cost of 1.4 type lenses. He paid $899Cdn for the VR lens (which is basically the same amount I have invested in two consumer type conventional D lenses covering a similar focal range). Technology really is marching on. What's the focal range of the VR you're using? | ||

Hey Court, What's the speed of that VR lens of yours? Visited a buddy in Toronto the other day who IS a PRO photographer (25+ years, successful with a host of long-time corporate clients - and a saint of a guy; he cleaned my dirty smudged sensor  ) and asked him about VR lenses... He said they're great and showed me his own Nikkor 70-200 1:2.8G ED VR type lens that cost the moon. So I asked him about my buddy's 18-200 1:3.5-5.6G ED VR lens (roughly 2/5ths the price of the above lens) - specifically - a) is there any difference in optical quality? - or - b) is it simply a difference of convenience with available light due to the larger maximum aperture? His answer was the latter. I was glad to hear that... Cause I already have a tripod. | ||

That's it. . . the Nikkor 70-200 1:2.8G ED VR. There are about 10 things that make this one of the best lens in the world. The BEST, in my view, are the 5 ED elements. This lens is SUPER sharp. Nikon, in the USA, is currently offering rebates ($100 on this lens) until the end of July. | ||

Wow, the best lens in the world. Something to aspire to, for sure. Have you posted pics from Daytona? I'd love to see them. Here's a few views from my garden last summer. The first was taken using the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG macro - handheld at 1/125 f5.6 using the macro feature at 300mm focal length.  This taken using the Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED - handheld 1/320 f4.5 at 70mm.  Same as above - handheld 1/250 f4.5 at 70mm.  | ||

GREAT WORK . . . cool R bikes! P.S. "best lens in the world" is perhaps a bit over the edge. Lens, like many things, have so many varied applications I'm not sure one could be declared THE best. I will say the Nikon is darned impressive in terms of WOW factor. But, it looks like your keen eye, shooting with the Sigma, does the same thing. You have a keen eye. | ||
