I am looking for anyone who has a picture of this bike and knows the rider that won 3 national races on this "FAMOUS HARLEY DAVIDSON". |

earline, Around this board we take great offense to any Buell being called a Harley Davidson much less one with such a great history as Lucifers Hammer. |

Umm, Buelliedan my friend, me thinks perhaps you're confusing LH1 with LH2. |

Aaron, You might be right. I was just assuming since this was requested on a Buell board he was asking for the Buell "Hammer" I always get into trouble with my assumptions!! |

good read by Dave Gess, copyright 2000 all rights reserved from mcnews.com.au BATTLE OF THE TWINS GRAND PRIX/GP1 CHAMPIONS Year Name, Hometown Mach. 1986 Gene Church, Turnersburg, NC Harley-Davidson 1985 Gene Church, Turnersburg, NC Harley-Davidson 1984 Gene Church, Turnersburg, NC Harley-Davidson from amasuperbike.com
Quote:Here in the United States, road racing continued to generate intense fan loyalty. The AMA announced a series of races for two-cylinder bikes, the Battle of the Twins for 1983. Although money was tight, Harley-Davidson, with help from the recently formed Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), rolled out a Sportster-based XR hybrid dubbed, "Lucifer's Hammer". This XR1000, with Springsteen aboard, annihilated the first BOTT field in Daytona that year. Team rider Gene Church went on to blow away the machines from Europe and Japan in winning three additional Battle of the Twins titles between 1984-1986.
another Quote:According to Allen Girdler and Ron Hussey from their book "Harley Davidson Sportster", published by Motorbooks International, 1995, the Harley race shop: "Reconstituted a frame left over from the team's road racing retirement ten years earlier, fitted it with the latest in brakes and suspension, built a beyond-full-race XR750 with the XR1000's bore and stroke, clothed the monster in early XRTT fairing, tank, and seat and sic'ed the incomparable Jay Springsteen on the field for the BoTT race at Daytona Beach in 1983. He smoked 'em. Trounced, crushed, whipped, destroyed, aced--pick any cliche from the sports page's collection and it fits" "The factory turned the project over to a top private tuner/dealer, Don Tilley. He and his rider, Gene Church, took the BoTT title for the next three years and retired as living legends."

That is indeed The "Z-Man" along with Henry Duga and someone, may be EB, TA or DL, behind the bike. Scott Zampach, for those new to Buell, is a racing legend and one of the finest people you'll ever hope to meet. If you have never had anyone who was a famed racer/celeb type treat you like you were the only and most important person in the world...make it a point to meet him. He spent a good deal of time with many of us praying for him daily waiting to see if he'd ever return to a normal life. He did. Meet him when you get a chance. Court |
