and this would be SB_Jim. i'm kinda bummed i don't have a shot of him on Madduck's Uly, altho Jim had seen (and heard) enough, and between now and the time this pic was taken he sold his S2 Thunderbolt and replaced it with his OWN Ulysses to sit on! Jim, thanks for yours and your family's grand company and hospitality, very much appreciated. the Baileys sure hit the spot last night, and i slept like a baby (a baby with about 700 miles to go). today i was flying solo, for the first time on this trip, and it felt truly bizarre to follow Jim out of his driveway and down to the highway, with him heading south, off to work, me heading north, off to ride, with nobody to chase, nobody to push, and nobody up the line waiting to meet me. for the next two days i get to be my own company, and it's the truth when i say i was ready to decompress just a little, to turn down the heat and let my inner autopilot fly the bird for awhile. thanks again, Jim! remember in yesterday's thread how hard we tried to get Madduck's Uly next to the ocean? today was MUCH easier. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

altho...this is a "Pay to Play" beach, and i didn't want to pay. i told the lady at the gate that i just wanted to grab a couple of pix and run, and she said she was cool with that as long as i stayed where she could see me. fine by me, thanks! in the pix above i was testing the waters, so to speak. i did NOT want to get stuck here. after a few minutes of posing the bike on the harder, drier stuff, i decided to push my luck and back Madduck's Uly into the ocean. GULP! (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

i feel fairly confident in my belief that Madduck's Uly is the very FIRST Uly to be kissed by the Pacific Ocean. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

a friendly jogger snapped this pic. HURRY!, i pleaded. note how the bike is "settling in." every time a wave came up, the bike went down. the jogger took two pix. i didn't like the first one, and asked for another, closer. this one i liked well enough, thank you very much. the bike REFUSED to be pushed from this spot, and i had to start it and walk it in gear back onto the dry stuff. i'm thrilled to have gotten these photos, and ECSTATIC that this little stunt went off without a hitch. pretty bizarre tire tracks for a brand-new, high-zoot motorcycle. good thing the owner wasn't here to see this. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

Madduck, i was TRYING to take the pix above on world famous Pismo Beach, but i ended up on Grover Beach instead. in the interest of time (and considering i got in free), i took what was offered and skedaddled with your skooter. about two minutes later i entered Pismo Beach proper, as evidenced by this photo. so, in years to come, as you tell the tale of your brave Ulysses, if you wanna lead folks to believe that the "Kissed by the Pacific" shots were actually taken on Pismo Beach (which has a MUCH nicer ring than Grover Beach, doncha think?), well, that's ok by me. it'll be our little secret. Madduck, i know you live in Willmar, Minnesota, and the sign here in Pismo Beach says Wilmar, but, well, it was close enough to catch my eye, think of you, and stop and take a pic. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

this is up the coast a ways, in one of my favorite little places in the world, Cambria, California. i was jonesin' for some caffeine and chocolate SO bad, and knew i could find some here in town. (Cambria is a small town, which Starbucks has apparently yet to discover.) the Rainbow Bean Coffee House looked PERFECT! (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

tell ya what, bucko, friends don't let friends drink at the frikkin' Rainbow Bean - this crap was AWFUL! this was, by far, the worst double mocha i've ever had. i couldn't even finish it, and threw about two and a half dollars worth right in the trash. i shoulda raised a fuss, but i gritted my teeth and soldiered on. all i got out of the deal was a headache and a bad attitude. Kandie, if you're listening, i KNOW you feel my pain... (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |

your basic touristy-type pic of the Pacific Ocean, near San Simeon and Hearst Castle. i was tempted to take the tour of the castle (i've never done so), but the lines were long and the crowds immense, and i needed to keep rolling. you can't even get a photo of the place without doing the tour, as the castle sits so far back from Highway 1. seeds for another trip. i fed grass to several of the horses. this guy was wary, wouldn't let me stroke his nose, but sure didn't mind all the treats i could muster. i spent about ten minutes here, and it was very relaxing, and very enjoyable. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 06, 2005) |
