like i said, a cool place, definitely into scooters. didn't get to hang near long enough, would like to go back some time on a busy weekend and just watch the comin's and go'ins for a spell.

the cop wanted to have a bit of an attitude, but Sparky was too cool for that.
Sparky got tagged for being a bit over (as was everyone else rolling down this hill, cars and bikes alike), but had been doing an awesome and safe job of piloting us into town, and didn't deserve the ticket IMO.
am pretty sure this cop works this 1/2-mile chunk of road all day long, and pretty sure he's busy writing tickets all day long.
we should have all gotten commendations for being as mellow as we were. you want speedin'? we'll give you speedin'!

...to a man i never had the privilege of meeting, but someone i've heard so many wonderful things about.
Joe worked for American Honda.
sounds simple, but EVERYONE i've ever talked to who knew him have told me that Joe was one in a million, just as passionate about people as he was about motorcycles, and it didn't matter WHAT you rode, despite the word "Honda" in his title.
Joe used to attend the early Porterville (CA) rallies. i attended my first rally in 1999, a year after Joe's untimely death during motorcycle testing at Willow Springs International Raceway.
the stories i heard about this man were legendary, and i came home from that weekend with the cloisonné pin that you see resting here on Joe's headstone, and with a fondness for a man whom i never had the good fortune to know.
the headstone was designed by Joe's son, and if you look close you'll note that the angel's wings in the center are a pair of Honda's historic "wing" logos turned on their side. nice, very nice.

when Russ mentioned that we'd be going right by the cemetery where Mr. Boyd is buried, i knew instantly that we would stop and pay him a visit.
and i went down to the garage, where i have all my motorcycle mementoes on display, and pulled this pin down and packed it safely away in my tank bag.
this pin had traveled every mile of FBRAT with me, and i hope that it meant something wonderful to Joe that a group of strangers would stop by on this warm afternoon and say hello.

i asked Russ to say a few words about Mr. Boyd - he and Joe were good friends - and he kindly obliged, while Tom took advantage of the warm day and cool grass to practice.
