a little background here: Denise and i took a ride on her SV650 last December up to Shirley Meadows, a cool little ski resort at the top of the Bostrom, and posted the pix on the day in the Lake Isabella Home Town thread here on BADWEB. this is one of the pix from that ride: well, way back in July, long before FBRAT was anything more than just a hazy, demented vision of what it was to ultimately become, my friend Jim "Pdxs3t" Corso - who has never met a photo he was afraid to chop - came up with THIS frightening apparition: later, as FBRAT started coming together in earnest, i invited Al and Joanne Lighton from American Sport Bike to be a part of the festivities, and Joanne eagerly volunteered to be in charge of the "Buelling Man" conflagration that was planned for Ocotillo Wells. my wishes were simple: i wanted something we could set on fire, something that related to Buells and Hooligans. Joanne was absolutely AMPED to be in charge, and i couldn't wait to see what she came up with. when Timbo Horton posted up his pix from the annual American Sport Bike BBQ held on August 28th, i had a pretty good idea of what Joanne had been up to: tonight, at Ocotillo Wells, i got my first look at Buelling Man in the flesh: (Message edited by jerry_haughton on October 22, 2005) |

Mike, not nearly as dramatic as it looks. Al from American Sport Bike had just plugged Don Sabatino's tire, and was cutting off the excess plug. sure looks like major surgery tho, doesn't it??? |

You remeber the first chop of that photo that I did. You should hear Shel, all she has to do is glance at this one and she starts cracking up. Its almost as good as the party with the alien's pic!

the Buelling Men hitting on some of the ladies in attendance. note all the stuff in the air, which is sand being blown around by some pretty incredible wind. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on October 26, 2005) |

...and taped ten bottle rockets - one for each day of FBRAT - to the back of the BMan. this seemed like SUCH a good idea at the time... (Message edited by jerry_haughton on October 26, 2005) |

the original plan had the BMan about six feet off the ground. woulda worked fine, 'cept we didn't think we had the materials for six feet worth of bonfire. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on October 26, 2005) |

the support system was modified a skosh to place the BMan closer to the burner, and here Al and Joanne are making final adjustments, even as the blaze has already begun licking at the Buelling Man's butt. beer, the wonder drug. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on October 26, 2005) |

here Al and Joanne are just about happy with the program. they placed a piece of cardboard upwind of the fire to block some of the wind and give the budding inferno a fighting chance. as memory serves it wasn't long before the cardboard was tossed in the fire as additional fuel. let the flames begin. this gig was well-documented, with cameras positioned at every angle (in this case EBear and ReindogForgerTom). not often you get a night shot at the exact moment another photog's flash fires. also note that by a beery fluke of fate the rear support for Buelling Man has already been consumed by fire, allowing the BMan to ride out his remaining minutes pulling the world's longest (and hottest) wheelie. also note that i posted this pic WAY out of order, as in the following pix Buelling Man hasn't resorted to riding on one wheel yet. dammit, this is JUST the sort of thing that happens when you drink too much! i am a strained professional. do not try this at home. well, i think you kids can take it from here for the next couple of minutes. for optimal viewing pleasure it'll be necessary for you to power down several colds beers as this show continues to unfold, you know, to put you in the moment as it were. note that the bottle rockets are still in place (i.e. pointing UP). they would NOT stay that way for very much longer... (Message edited by jerry_haughton on October 26, 2005) |
