Ferris, Great stories that just keep coming from your trip. As I read along, and see how people came out of the woodwork during your trip, it really comes back to what I think will be the "marvel" of our generation...the Internet with E-mail. Without the BadWeb and the connections we have made over the years through this marvel, your trip may have not been such a sucess if it was held in 1975 instead of 2005. If it was 1975, you probably would have been making most of that trip alone. And as I type this, I am listening to my satillite radio. It must have been the same for my Great Grandmother, who I knew quite well for the first 27 years of my life. She had two stoves in her house...the wood stove made bread the best, and then she had the electric stove for 'backup'. It's like us...from typewriter to the Internet. Thank goodness I took typing class when I was in the 10th grade! |

so me 'n Thunder set across Kansas. says something about the character of my new friend, a man i only met in person for the first time about 14 hours earlier, that'd he burn a perfectly good day off just to ride to Hays, Kansas with me. Jeff, what is WRONG with you??? anyway, eastern Kansas was cooler than i expected, with enough greenery and contour changes to make the view from I-70 *mildly* entertaining (in a "Help, I'll take ANYTHING!" sort of way). it didn't take long for central Kansas to live down to its reputation, tho (no reflection on the people who live and ride there), and sleepy became the operative word. and hunger. we grabbed an exit 'cause i needed to dry out one whistle and wet another, and i remembered a gift that was stowed in the tail trunk. Kandie, this is your homemade banana bread, being put to mighty good use! (why weren't we munching on the huge bag of chocolate chip cookies you made? because we polished them off at the big group stop in Booneville, MO yesterday afternoon! ) (Message edited by jerry_haughton on September 27, 2005) |

still fresh, still moist, still warm (if you used your imagination), and MIGHTY tasty. for the next 24 hours this was pretty much my breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it didn't suck. in fact, Kandie's banana bread made it all the way to Florence, CO before it was finally reduced to a small pile of crumbs. thank you Kandie, your gifts went a long ways, and were shared by many. home-made road food. it gets no better. Jeff needed a u-turn point, and we settled on Hays, Kansas. i wanted to stop there because a friend that i wouldn't meet for another 36 hours or so (hi Dbird!) used to live there and SO wanted me to stop there. why? i don't rightly know... anyway, this is the Harley/Buell dealer in Hays, and me 'n Thunder were about the only thing happening. fair enough, if you've ever been to Hays, Kansas you know it's not New York or Los Angeles, and i bet the people who live there like it just fine that way. by the time i spied this photo op from the freeway, i'd already blown past the exit. bummer. and out here, no telling when the next exit would appear over the horizon. i s'pose i COULD have locked in the hubs on the Uly and done the median dance, but i was nervous about breaking any traffic laws. not TOO nervous, apparently, as i hung a hard right and went DOWN the ON ramp. hooligan! this photo was taken in Ellis, Kansas, and i think its cool. the lighting is too hot, and the placement of the bike could be better (it's hiding a hideous mangle of rusty old pipes sticking out of the ground), but it makes me smile anyway. bwt, if you do a Google on Ellis, KS, the name Walter P. Chrysler will pop up. just so's ya know. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on September 28, 2005) |

this will make many of you wonder about my sanity (those of you who haven't yet formulated an opinion, anyway), but Kansas wasn't that bad. GASP! granted, the interstate ain't the place to be on a sportbike (or on ANY bike), but the miles rolled by relatively easily. that said, this sign was still a welcome sight. THIS sign was a welcome sight, too. problem is, there's little to distinguish eastern Colorado from western Kansas, so it was More Of The Same for awhile. no worries, each hour puts me closer to Denise, and closer to the Colorado Rockies. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on September 28, 2005) |

a few miles inside the Colorado border (yeah, i know, the pic looks like Kansas), the rain was threatening again (as it had on and off for the past several hours), so i stopped to stretch the rain cover over the tank bag and don my wet-weather gloves. it doesn't look like it, but this photo was taken just a few yards off of Interstate 70. (it also doesn't look like it's gonna rain, but i wasn't riding the direction you're looking). i pulled as far off the freeway as i could, right up to the barbed-wire fence separating me from the corn-fed prairie beyond, simply for the sake of a little privacy, and got this photo for my efforts. Bruce, does this mean that from now on i'll be known as the Crocked Hunter? Jeff, how many miles did you end up doing that day (SICK!), and how wet did you get on the ride back to Lee's Summit? |

Dbird, Kansas and it's people were very good to me on this trip, and it was with a little sadness that i left this great state. altho, as you know, the slab thing thru there pretty much sucks! no worries about stopping in Hays, made for a handy place to make a pit stop. Jeff did his best to get the salesgal at the dealership to get excited about FBRAT in ANY way, shape or form, to no avail. he asked her if they were getting in any Uly's, to which she replied, "No, we haven't ordered any. You can't sell a bike like that around here." hmmm, wonder what the Wizard would say to that? EBear, i didn't stay in Hays long enough to give the place a fair chance, but, as you know, i'm a small town kind of guy (cue John Mellencamp), and i bet it's a great place to call home. surely there must be a twisty road near there SOMEwhere??? see you and the rest of the Oktoberfast Hooligans on Friday. ride safe. A local radio station just played Tales of brave Ulysses by Cream. it's been a long time since the last time I heard it. Dig it up some of it could apply.
