All right, that's the last of 'em. Let's go have a beer! Nuh, nuh.....nuh, nuh...nuh-nuh, nuh-nuh, nuh-nuh, nuh-nuh!(Cello music) Just when you thought it was safe for innocent motorcycles to hang out under bridges... Aiieeeee! Crazed Buellers! Schemp, Hemi, Michael and "The Rocque".

Lunch in Luckenbach, Texas, where everybody is somebody (Willie and Waylon and The Boys weren't there that day). Ahh, here we are at Camp Live Oak. Everything is so lovely... ...and here comes my friend John, down from San Angelo. How is it possible that I took this picture since he arrived before me? It's still a mystery...

Hey! Get all that damn luggage out of the way! There's BEER under there somewhere! John E. holding court at the picnic tables. "Hey ya'll, I'm hungry! Let's eat!" Dinner is served! I can't tell if Jeff B. is singing karaoke or is about to pop Jeff S. on top of his head!

Digesting and expounding on the relationship between Buells and the movements of heavenly bodies through the cosmos..."If my Buell back-fired in the rainforest and nobody was around to put out the resulting fire, how much 'global warming' would I be accountable for...?" Leaving the intellectual heights, we now turn to the more traditional "gittin' sloshed 'roun the bonfire". Here's a toast from Jay and Dr. Mandy: "To Torque!" Carl says:"Thish importunated tekillya from Mexico shore ain't very shtrong." Thanks a lot Carl, my brain cell count was halved that night!

"Sam 'n Carolina, sittin' on a tree, dee-are-aye-enkay-aye-en-gee!" Now Sam, we all know that was just warm milk in that cup you're holding, right? The Beemer/Duc crowd discusses the inherent superiority of European bikes...not! They're just a buncha drunk motorcyclists like "the rest of us"! "The Rest Of Us" (drunk). Johnny, Alan, Mike, Chad, Billy and Todd enjoying the warm ambience of the trailer...

Oh, Crap! Morning already? I just went to bed! O.K., let's go ride! Oh, how about some breakfast first. What a spread! (Pass the honey, please.) Here's the part where we ride, ride, ride! I'll just repost a couple of Steve's vidcaps for flavor. See his posts above if you need any reminding of how awesome the roads are around Leakey! There's something wrong with this picture, but I can't figure out what it is...Oh! I know! Those trees are not native to this area. (Don't worry folks, he's O.K.)

Here's my wife, Bad 'Nena on her Naughti Ducati out on Texas Highway 335 (The Roller Coaster). My flash killed the sign, so I added a caption reflecting what it says... Here she is again, lookin' tough. Beautiful view if I do say so myself. The landscape's not bad either! Here's a picture of 'Nena and Dr. Mandy in their cage. The kangaroos from the local exotic wildlife ranch on 335 often come by to gawk at them. I'm sure you can understand why. (Because kangaroos are curious, of course. Why, what were you thinking?)

O.K. now let's head back out 337 to Vanderpool and Allan Johncock's place. Who is Allan Johncock and what is "his place", you ask? Well, if you like vintage motorcycle racing, just type his name into a search engine and stand back! He also organizes the Vincent Owners Group for Texas. The V.O.G. are having their National Rally in Kerrville (about 60 miles from Leakey) even as I type this! As for his place, how 'bout some pics. Please try not to drool on your keyboard... Here's a little corner of heaven: The man himself with two of his regular racers: a Matchless G50 and a Matchless G50-engined racing Special. Elvis may have left the building, but Mike Hailwood's ghost is lurking around here somewhere...

Do I look stunned? Jay and Dr. Mandy are trying to revive me. The good doctor said it was a clear case of "Motocyclus Overloadus". Norton, Vincent, BSA; choices, choices, choices... Ellena chooses Vincents!

I'm kinda partial to Nortons myself... ...especially THIS one! (Manx 350) Of course, Gileras are pretty sweet, too.

Velocettes, anyone? No thanks, I think I'll just have buttered scones with my tea, please. And fer all yew 'mericans out there, a 30's era Indian inline four. What a beauty! There was more, but to document it all would take a book! Mr. Johncock's got his own Guggenheim exhibit out there in the middle of nowhere! He and his wife were incredibly nice and answered all of our foolish questions. Then he showed us his four trained killer Mastiffs (Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp) that help him guard his collection! And some cool old cars out back, etc, etc, ad infinitum. We finally had to leave because he wouldn't let me spend the night among the bikes, dreaming of my eleventh Isle of Man victory. Here are Jay and Dr. Mandy on the way back to Leakey on 337 right after a "10mph" corner (did you go 10mph, Jay?)

Back at Camp, here's Jay's '99 X1 lookin good. It was both Jay's and John's birthdays that weekend. Here I am with John and his present (just got back from Vegas and the Art of the Motorcycle exhibit, which made Allan Johncock's place that much cooler). Don't worry (I know how you do!), I got a book for Jay, too! Oops! Got one out of order. Here I am in the cage with my wife. For some reason, the 'Roos don't come around to look at me... Ya know, it just occurred to me that Allan Johncock is Australian...and there are all these kangaroos...Oh my! Do you think there is some sort of Aussie terrorist cell forming in Central Texas? Food for thought... |

...then we had dinner and got snockered around another bonfire, yada, yada and had an awards ceremony and prize drawing yada, yada and got drunker and went to bed. I don't have any pictures of all this (Sir Chadley is especially thankful for that) and I'm sure that you're glad, too. Next morning is breakfast (no pics) and then...Group Photo Time! Harleys on one end, Ducs and Firebolts on the other with tube-framed Buells in the middle. Say, isn't that the way they fall in the motorcycle "food-chain"? (What the hell does that mean? I dunno.) Another view: What a gnarly-lookin' bunch! O.K., that's quite enough of that.

What does it mean when your mother-in-law says that you have sexy legs? And no, her name is not Mrs. Robinson! You know, I think this Monster makes my legs look even BETTER! Let's get the hell outta here before the cops finally figure out where we holed-up! Jeff B.'s son J.C. practicing for next year... Takin' out the trash. Ouch! Sorry, fellas... Thankfully, no one was (seriously) injured and only a couple of bikes were damaged. It seemed that everyone had a great time this year (I know I did! ), maybe even better than last year, and I know that plans are already in the works that will make next year even better (could that be possible?!! ). Thanks to Billy and Jeff at Austin Buell and Ducati Austin, respectively, and to Lloyd, our fearless BRAG leader and head Fool for numerous contributions, and to all the wonderful unnamed folks that pitched-in where needed to make it all come together. Give yourselves a hand! Ya'll come back now, ya hear? Buellerthanyou... Outstanding pics and narrative not to mention a great group of riding companions. Hope all this gets archived as it will make winter much more tolerable in the frozen north. |
