I have been meaning to this for a while. I was bored today so I loaded up the cameraphone with some extra memory and when to town, literaly. Now these are in no particular order of arrangement but I will tell you a little snipit for each one. I did not take as many as I planned to, too many cops hassling me about parking my bike on sidewalks to get pics, poor parking situations downtown and I didn't feel like covering the whole city so I stuck manly around Downtown and Southwest detroit and Dearborn's historic area HenryFord and Greenfield Village. I will probally go out again soon and get some more... This is a really cool road that leads to block of cement that holds the cables for the Ambassador bridge down. They now have the road fenced in because of "Homeland Security issues so I was not able to get a Picture of it but trust me it is SOOO COOOL. This road (The one that intersects BTW) is made of brick, and has rial road tracks connecting all the buildings together to transfer, well, I don't actually know but it is cool none the less. These are the old Boblo Island docks. These super cool old wodden steam boats lived here. The boats would take you down river about 30 miles to Boblo Island which used to be a amusment park, roller coasters, etc. The docks are now a strage yard of some sorts and the Island is now home to million dollar homes. Old Tigers Stadium AKA Briggs Stadium for those who can remember that far back. This used to be the home of not only the Detroit Tigers but the Lions also. Another little known fact the Pistions used to play at Cobo arena before the Palace of Auburn Hills. Yes there are still brick roads Down Town The Automotive Hall of Fame It is right outside The Henry Ford, It is a cool place to go If you like to read plaques and see a few cars. If you want to see a TON of cars save your mney and head across the parking lot and into the Henry Ford Museum The old central train station downtown. They are trying to restore it. The owner of the Ambassador Bridge has purchased it and they are in legal battles with a guy named "Dave of Detroit" who took a TON of stuff outta there. He has a letter from the original owner saying he could etc etc. So they are trying to get some of the stuff back so they can restore it to its orgiginal glory. Built by Marshall Fredericks in 1955 this bronze statue has since become the symbol of Detroit. It was never ment to be called the Spirit of Detroit the artits ment it more to be used more for religious meaning between God and all of manking The Rennisance Center. Now owned my Genral Motors. There are restaraunts, offices and a hotel in here. It is a very Beutiful building on the inside as well Were all the huge rolls of paper for the Detroit news are stored Home of the Detroit Red Wings. Best Hockey team ever! One of the few NHL hockey team to have never done a major change to there logo or uniform since there inception as the Detroit Red Wings. The winged tire has had subtle changes over the years but since but has remained the same along with the colors of Red and White The entrance to Mexican town. Great place to eat! Taco Bell eat your heart out! Maybe one of the best boxers of this century. The fist of Joe Louis is made out of Bronze and sits at the end of woodward across from Hart Plaza My old High School Holy Redeemer just a stones throw away from Mexican town. This year was the last class to graduate due to lack of funds. And the church across the lot Holy Redeemer. Art in the middle of no where. I found this across from the 2nd precinct by the Ambassador Bridge. This is Ford Motor Co. Confrence and Event center. It is in the shape of a oval and on the roof is the Ford logo as large as the building. This is by the Henry Ford Museum. Random Graffiti in Southwest Detroit. The coolest place to visit if you are ever in Metro Detroit. And in case you are in the area for any reason and have time, give me a call and I will give you a personal tour. The best burgers in Detroit. Four for $2 carry out special and they have been there since 1921 (the building not the burgers). So you know there good. And riding the train in the Greenfield Villiage, here they are blowing the scale and debrie out of the boiler. Well thats about it for today. If anyone wants to see more of the Henry Ford or Greenfield Village let me know I have a tone of pics from the inside... PS Sorry about all the spelling errors but I am tired LOL |

Spidey, Thanks for the pic of the Corktown Tavern - grabbed a few beers there about 10 years ago. Had to keep my mouth shut and not let on I'm a Flyers fan or I don't think I would have made it back out the door in one piece.

I've eaten at Telway... And the Pistons went from Cobo to the Silverdome before the palace. Was at Tiger Stadium for the American League Championship Series. Downtown for the hydroplane races. |

Spiderman. Just saw this, working at the office today, waiting for my 20 service award! I get to "Town" often, always for work though. I usually hang out at Chene Park and Jefferson(the Greek Town bus parking lot), and Bellvue and Mack(the Greyhound wash facility.) A couple of years ago around Christmas I was shopping at American HD and I think you brought an X1 around front for a test ride but the thing stalled and it wouldn't restarted in time. Too bad for me. (Message edited by swampy on October 26, 2005) |

Hi Spiderman. Thanks so much for the great shots of the city, especially the Telway! Wow, did that bring back some memories. I spent many wee hours of the morning hang'n out there on my Pan Head rigid frame chopper after my discharge from the Air Force in '70. The serious street racers would meet there, and we'd all end up out at various locations until the cops showed up. I was actually back there for the Woodward Ave. Dream Cruise this year representing Flowmaster Exhaust, who I work for here in Santa Rosa, California. Stayed in Plymouth with an old high school buddy, and his friend lent me a Wide Glide for the day on Sunday after the Cruise. Anyway, thanks again for the great memories from the Detroit. Hey Swampy, could that beautiful two-tone cruiser be a '59 Pontiac? My dad was a pontiac man, so I got to know them pretty well. Here's the problem, and it's driving the gearheads up the wall here at Flowmaster! This car has the 4 dr. style top, but we see only 2 doors. Also, the distance between the wheel wells is much shorter than a 4 dr. We feel that not only is this car nicely customized, but it also has been sectioned, or shortened, eliminating the rear doors! Radical! Very cool, snapping a shot of this "dare to be different" ride. Dan |

It does look like a shorty, doesn't it. Had a friend who had a shorty '56 Chevy wagon many years ago. When a shorty is done right it looks almost stock. |

Pontiac....Ford.....jeeze, I don't know. I drove past there today and there is nothing in the little fenced in parking area anymore. I did see a guy pulling a restored 50s fire engine out of one of the warehouses today. I could see more old vehicles inside the building, I should have stopped and talked to them. I will probably be there tomorrow and also next Tuesday at the corner of Bellevue and Mack checking out a bunch of Greyhound buses that are supposed to come in this weekend. |

Hey! Did anyone go to the Winter Blast in Detroit? I went down to Greek Town on January 31. I could not believe what they did to the old town. The street lights were on, the streets were clean, the abandonded buildings were boarded and painted and the bums were absent! Every street light was on on Woodward all the way up to Highland Park, then the lights went OUT! I sure hope down town stays that way for a while. I know the city and the state have worked real hard at making it happen. Because of budget cuts one of the bus inspectors in my group was reassigned to a weigh-in-motion monitoring program in November. The powers that be brought him back for the week to work Super Bowl. I wish I had pictures of down town, nobody would believe me. |
