Since the topic of discussion is related to fuel and state mandated emissions equipment, it will take many lawyers lots of time to craft an official answer. I wouldn't hold you breath for an official answer. The system will function correctly if the owner / operator avoids over filling the tank. Every Blast is shipped with a sticker on the tank showing the proper fill level (one inch below the filler ring). If the tank is ever overfilled, or the bike is laid on it side for any extended length of time, the vent canister will get some liquid fuel in it. If any liquid fuel gets in the canister, it must be replaced for the system to function properly again.

So, the problem is due to operator error?
The little sticker does not indicate if the bike is supposed to be level/vertical or on the sidestand?
If the bike is on the sidestand is the one inch to be measured from the center, low side, or high side?
Have you ever had ten people from off the street at random try to fill a gas tank to within one inch of the bottom of the filler ring? If so, what were the results?
Why not just make the filler ring one inch deeper and say to fill the tank to the bottom of the filler ring?
Why not add a "dipstick" type of extension to help owners or gas station attendants (like in Oregon where state law mandates the attendant fill the tank with gas, but some/many stations make an exception for motorcyclists) to fill the tank to the proper level?
What is the gas tank capacity from dry to properly-full? Does that amount equate to the specifications listed for the bike?
How full is full, and how long is an inch when visually inspected while filling the tank with gas from a flowing nozzle that often have rubber evaporative overtubes which in themselves inhibit visibility of the filling process?
I could go on. I won't. ;)

Funny thing was that we replaced the can on our Blast and still had the same behavior.

Just out of curiousity, does liquid fuel never get purged from that can? The can seems to deal with quite a bit of water from the PCV system. Which reminds me...

I was checking out some hoseage on our Blast. The first T coming out of the PCV valve went DOWN to the charcoal can. Seems like a good way to get lots of fluid to the can. It seems like it shoulda been pointing up so heaver, gooier stuff would either travel to the puke drain or get sucked back into the carb.

Maybe someone can diagram the innards of the charcoal can. I understand that there's at least one check valve in there someplace.

Anyway...

One more thing, Anony-

Maybe that's info the factory should put in the manual. The manual goes into painful Oil Propaganda - and most people's Blasts will probably run fine on Mazola corn oil. Sorry... It'd be a nice thing to include about WHY not to overfill the tank.

More on the Charcoal Can:

I decided to look at how things were routed on the Dyna - an 02 FXD. On that bike, the crankcase breathers and the fresh air for the can are separate. I don't know what other Buells or Harleys are doing with these things, but that lack of separation and the potentially improper orientation of the first T fitting might be contributing factors.

Sorry if I'm flogging a dead horse here. I feel very strongly that this needs to be addressed due potential liability suits as well as a possible attack from the CARB people.

More Blast Evap:

A friend asked me to rejet his Blast. This bike's carb, airbox, and evap system and all the hoses and such that go along with it were as delivered from the factory.

The conditions I described in a previous post where the first PCV breather T goes DOWN (not totally vertical - but pointing a few degrees below horizontal) was also present on this bike. That seems to mean that the charcoal can would once again be susceptible to goo. Yes? No? Maybe?

According to Anony above, liquid fuel will screw up the charcoal can. What about crankcase puke and condensation?

Once again, I'll do what I can to help.

I'm around 6'3" and I feel good on a Firebolt.
The Lightning is too compact for me on the highway, although I'd love one for riding here in Amsterdam. Sort of Supermotard style.... :)

Peter, The seating position reminds me of my wife's SV650S, which I love to ride - for about 30 minutes..... I am also 6'3", and my legs just do not like being bent into pretzels for very long. This has been a recurring comment from larger Buell riders that HD/Buell has ignored.

I will be buying a new bike this year, and while I have enjoyed my Cyclone (even though it has had numerous mechanical challenges), I will not be buying a new Buell. I have been told that God's own Buell dealership, Modesto Buell (that was created just to sell Buells) may not be continuing as a Buell dealer. It seems they are having difficulty selling XB's, but not the Ducati line that they started selling this year. I was told by them that the XB size complaint is the one that they hear the most...

Maybe my legs are shorter than normal or something. My knees (which are pretty crunchy) fit into the frame cutouts comfortably.
I rode the S for about an hour from France into Belgium. It was too cramped for me though. I then rode the R for two hours into Holland. It gave me a bit of a neck ache because of the sportier seating position, but my legs were fine. An R with slightly higher bars would be perfect.

Well, after waiting for a MONTH for my HARLEY dealer to find time to fix my bike which is BROKEN due to a failed front isolator, I find that my bike key was in my fanny pack which was recently lost. So, I loose my appointment and find out it takes 7 days to get replacement keys from Buell. Now, after 30 days, I'm still 2 weeks out from 'potentialy' having a running bike again. God this sucks. Sorry, but I needed to vent. I need a fucking bike I can RIDE damit. Winter come'eth.

It may be little consolation but if you want to see GENUINE joy and rampant happiness tell Dave Gess that "it takes 7 days to get replacement keys from Buell".

He, Erik and I would all cheer in unison and shed a fond tear as we recall the days it took MONTHS to get Buell keys and a myriad of innovative solutions were shot down.

Court, I lost my truck key in the same bag. I went to Toyota, showed them my insurance card, showed them my drivers license and walked out with a key in less than 15 min. It cost me $1.25. Its like with Buell, I'm forced to sweat the small shit. At least give me the option of paying for a fedex myself. What if my wife and I were touring for christs sake?

As for the long time to repair my bike. I still don't understand why my unrideable bike has to wait a month so 500 people can get oil changes before they head out for Sturgis. Man if this were warranty work I would be going postal on my dealer right now. And what gets me is it happens every single year!!

I know I'm blinded by more than a little rage right now, but I think Harley and Buell and the dealers still have LOTS of opportunity to improve on the customer service front.

Well on a lighter note.....Modesto Buell has came through again for me.....2000 M2 leaking oil BAD , stuck at work , Wife at the Doctor and needs me ....Modesto buell sent me a ride and picked up me bike....Sorry you guys are having such a hard time with your dealers, the crew at Modesto are the very best in the nation....give them a shot 209-578-1330

You'll never guess why I'm in the market for a bike, love the XB but will not be purchasing one anytime soon. 2 year warranty? How 'bout 1 year and include trucking service to take it to a good dealer?

Hey all you who've been stranded by your Buell...

If you angle right with the Buell customer service phone people while your bike is down, they'll reimburse you for towing- they've done it for me twice. ...then again, though mine is still under warranty and it was a warranty item (belt). The last time I just typed a receipt for my friend hauling my bike in with his pickup and Buell reimbursed me the $40.00 I gave him.

PERSONAL OPINION: becuase so many folks relish using the internet to blow things out of proportion, take things out of context, webmail (the quivalent of commercial extortion as in I crashed my bike on Deal's Gap, said nothing, now I want a new front end cause mine shakes, ergo it MUST be an inherently flawed design) and because the good old legal system makes things typed (listen closely) on the internet admissable without regard to context they are typed in.

The contributions we've received here are incredibly valuable, but I'm GUESSING that no one in an official cpacity has any interest in getting into a debate. I wouldn't.

Tell us how you really feel, Court. If you have an issue with something, address it to that person.

Do I think my Firebolt's front wheel has an inherent design flaw? No, and I don't recall ever saying so. Do I think that due to the extreme design of it that it is more sensitive than other wheel designs, yes. Doesn't make it flawed, just special.

I love my bike, the only things I would have changed about it seem to have all been addressed in the '04 models (no, I won't be buying one, nor will I be swapping the parts for '04 stock pieces). I told Erik before and I will again, this bike is phenomenal.

For the company
I would like to see a website where I could order most everything Buell. Not just the add on parts, but regular parts. And, not at marked up dealer prices. That way us folk that are having to depend dealers that look at Buell as a pain in the @$$, can depend on someone that really cares. Like BMC and myself.
I this asking too much?
I think it would help out quite a bit.

I'd settle for a web-store at dealer prices. I'm SOOOooooo sick of being told "wer'e waiting for Buell to send it, their so (insert insult here).

Of course if you pry into it you find there is no order in to Buell.
