Our community rule of thumb for acceptable content is that if one would hesitate to expose the content in the workplace or in front of children, it is not appropriate for posting on BadWeatherBikers.com Hint: Please refrain from posting nudity/semi-nudity, overtly sexual, political, religious symbols as a profile/avatar picture.

I was just kidding about CJ's profile picture! It is not offensive in any way.

Here's my new suggestion. Put all the avatars in a central pool like the emoticons or available clip art are now. People could upload their own avatar to the pool but everyone would have to pick an avatar from the pool (if they wanted an avatar). If someone did upload an offensive one it could be simply deleted by any custodian. Simple! One little problem is whether the current software supports something like that.

Blake,
I tried to post on the whole avatar subject, but I started getting kind of long perhaps being over analytical about people loosing perspective when if comes to the 'protection' of the computer screen separating them from the rest of the world and wondering if they behave that way in person.. See, it's getting long already. So, here's the really short version...

I like them, I like having them as a visual reference to the poster. However, if certain persons continue to push the envelope and insist on screwing up a good thing for the rest of us. Then by all means, either you boot them, shut down the board or take the images away..

I suppose this now means those people that wanted to have rude or questionable avatars can keep them, just in their profile.. Only.

If, in the future, if you return them, I will once again utilize that feature. Until then, people will just have to look into everyone’s profile to see their 'visual' representation here. Unless that has to be removed as well..

I hope that made some semblance of sense..

Later,..

Only thing I don't like about this is the fact that a large group of people are being impacted due to the misbehavior of one or two. IMO, people should pay the consequences of their behavior.

But I will caveat that with the fact that I'm not an admin and don't know how hard it would be to boot the offenders. I'm sure the best was done given the options available and the work required to accomplish that.

But that's just my opinion........

It's hard to moderate/custodiate water flowing in a river.

I've changed my profile/avatar pic numerous times depending on the mood/theme of the day/week/month/year.

X1tx, your caveat was correct.
Yes it would be real easy to boot the offenders.
But to be fair we like to give everyone a chance or two to get it right.
But alas what usually happens is an argument over what they think it ought to be vs. what the rules state.
Then a thread starts and people start ganging up on the custodians and Blake.
Soon all the fun goes out of the BadWeB...and that's what it's all about, fun, riding, sharing adventures, and the like, no one likes to moderate ranting and raving...
I really like the BadWeB, and have done all I can do to support it, but some days after some ranting over something as simple as a picture, I don't even want to log on, I hate those days.

Some discussion board apps now include a "Report Post" button on each post. It's function is to allow the community to self moderate and if inappropriate content is noticed, one simply clicks on the button and the offending post is submitted for review to the custodial staff. The only part that is missing... "if found by custodial staff to violate policy governing acceptable content on the board, a strong electric shock is rendered to the offender." Glitch is working out the bugs in that new module for the board. joker See, that is the sick type of thing that custodians fantasize about. LOL

Not sure but Glitch may be having nightmares about trying to stem a flood of inappropriate posts.

Brian (Loki),
Good suggestion. Thanks for that. : )

How about this, we'll re-institute the avatars on the condition that we all agree to shun using "inappropriate content" and that if any does show up, we'll join together in support of the family oriented content policy instead of launching into a tirade about free speech.

For the record just in case they are wondering, neither I nor anyone else I know ever had an issue with avatars like those used by Spiderman or Ebear or similar such pics. In fact that shot of Tony with his Hooters friends is one of my all time favorite profile pics... friends smiling cheek to cheek enjoying life and having a great time. Every time I noticed Spidy's profile pic, I couldn't help but smile. And man is that a welcome thing for me lately! : )

Do we have a pact then? Let's hear it, "yea", or "nay"?

I agree with Blake. But I also agree that if you don't like the rules, go somewhere else or start your own board. I like this board a lot and have no problems with the way it's run. But I do agree that the admins are right to stop something before it gets out of hand. The old Ducati board forum shut down because too many people started being overly abusive before a stop was put to it. Personally, I like the avatars and would like to have them back. But if they don't come back it won't leave me totally heartbroken.

The old Ducati board forum shut down because too many people started being overly abusive before a stop was put to it.

The old Buell Motorcycle Online board forum shut down because too many people started being overly abusive before a stop was put to it.

The old Buell Website board forum shut down because too many people started being overly abusive before a stop was put to it.

The old Buell CompuServe "Go RIDE" board forum shut down because too many people started being overly abusive before a stop was put to it.

When you start trying to be more than a place to share thoughts and ideas, it gets quite murky and the waters very difficult to navigate.

I think the avatars are a poor idea. I have no "content" objection, just think it's like hanging an extra 10# on a bike for "looks".

I say yea too, agree with the above, it's sometimes harder to deal with all the whiners and complainers as it is to moderate the few that don't adhere to the rules !!

Besides, I have such a cool avatar now !!

I must be the only one who agrees with Court. I removed the pic from my personal profile as soon as I found out it became an avatar. They annoy the hell out of me. On other boards people have avatars, bike lists, club affiliations and other pictures. One post might have so much CRAP(Clubs, Rides,Avatars,Pictures) attached that it's hard to tell if the poster really posted anything worth saying. Fer Chrissakes I know how to read, I don't need a picture to figure out who posted what. rolleyes

If there was something I was going to change about BADWEB I would change the way anyone can now access the R.A.N. page. When somebody from this board, who has provided contact info and has to log in to access it, I have no problem. But that same info is now accessible to ANYONE and I'm not sure I want to advertise my personal property and contact information on the world wide net.

Just a thought.

JB2,
If I were a custodian, I would most likely side with you and Court on this one. From that perspective, avatars add little to the discussions while adding yet another thing to custode.

Court,
What if we agree to carbon fiber avatars? Then we could personalize our posts without adding all that weight. : )

Blake,
A while back, you wrote the following regarding the existing decency policy:

quote:

But isn't the no nudity part already covered by the "if one would hesitate to expose the content in the workplace or in front of children, it is not appropriate for posting on BadWeatherBikers.com" requirment, no?

The only part about that statement that isn't clear is the definition of "one." Sure, most people get it, but I've been to houses where porno mags are left laying around, and the kids are free to browse as they want. And I'm not talking about Playboy and Penthouse here. These magazines made those look like Reader's Digest.

The only way I can think of to define that more clearly would be to substitute your name in place of the general "one." But then people would have to get to know your boundaries (not a difficult task) before understanding the policy.

I know it can be a pain and I thank you custodians for your work. I really appreciate this board, but I do love the avatars.

Blake, I really love your idea about group moderation. The ultimate say would be with the moderator, but I think it would lessen the burden... Most around here are level headed thinkers who would probably help out a lot.
