Oke, it's Christmas eve, and we're over at my buddy's. I knew he had a range in Germany, in the middle of nowhere. We had a few beers and somehow we end up talking about guns. Turns out he has two rifles. Past year I've been thinking about joining a club to learn shooting. Never been in the army, never held a gun before. But for some reason the forest calls me. I dream about stalking the woods and following tracks. I'd love to hunt some deer or maybe some turkey first?. Turns out my buddy has the same dream. So now we are gonna see what it takes to go hunting in the german woods together. The rifles he has are old. One shot, it's got a lever, and you gotta set a thingy for the range too. I dunno.... So, any tips for 2 dudes with an ancient rifle? I'm taking lessons next year first, and learn about the german laws concerning hunting. I'm excited, but maybe that's because I'm drunk ... |

Just one word of advice: 1) Point the barrel-looking-thingy away from things you care about, irregardless if loaded. That is all. Glad to help. CHris (P.S. you might think about bow hunting. It's a little more "fair" You can still be a bad shot with a rifle and kill something. Not so easy with a bow. You still get your stalking, and if you're like most people (and suck with a bow) the animal gets to live another day Chris |

Go do it! If you are not an archer already then you should go with the rifle. Look into the laws. You may also want to have your friends rifles checked out by a gunsmith, make sure they are in good shape Do you know the model, brand, caliber of the rifles? |

M2nc...You aren't too far off with that. My High School Biology teacher and Coordinator for the Conservation Club was Native American and every year he went deer hunting in the Apostle Islands off Wisconsin's North Shore with only a Bowie Knife. Whoops forgot to mention He was also the Cross Country Coach and his strategy was to run them down in the deep snow until they tired and he could get close enough for the kill. That was also the reason he hunted on the islands. Still he had to pack them out over the ice in Lake Superior to the mainland. Sounds like fun, eh? Think I will just settle for the rifle. LOL True Story. |

M2me, I shot two sparrows and a kitten today. They were attempting to flee the property. Just winged the neigbor kid though. Ing, Sounds to me like you might have an easier time coming over here for a visit. I have guns and will take you hunting. You supply the body armor. I'll hunt on public land in East Texas. I'm brave, but I ain't stupid. |

Hey Ingermar, All you need is a Suburban to hunt deer. Just ask my wife! All she did is roll in front of one running full speed and let it hit the truck on the left side. $800 worth of damage. Didn't kill it but he won't charge a Suburban again. |

Don't let the age of the gun throw you, if they are well maintained. I have a rifle (sweedish military, but I believe built in Germany, got it for $79) built in 1906 that is a highly modern fully functional bolt action, smoother then most stuff I could buy off the shelf ($500) today. Turn of the century guns, especially long arms, were WAY ahead of their time. |

Ingemar, The testing procedure is, at best, a painful exprience. German hunters are expected to memorize a dizzying array of laws. They must be able to identify not only every species of animal in the forest, but also its sex and age. Needless to say it's quite a task. A hunter in Germany is a highly respected person with many responsibilities. If the local farmer is losing crops to wild pigs, or deer, then the hunter who leases the hunting rights to that property can be held liable for the damages inflicted by the wild game -- his poor management of the wild game lead to the problem. Sounds pretty weird/different, but it works. PM me if you have a real interest in this and I can put you in touch with some very respectable hunters in the Eifel. |

Turkey Hunting is much more difficult than hunting deer. Try sticking to squirels to start! |

bigdaddy, Thanks for enlightening me. I think I will see what it takes to hunt in Belgium. I don't mind learning stuff. In fact, I realize I have a great deal to learn, but you make it sound like I need a univerity degree in biology. I don't want to be responsible for damage to a farmer's land. I'm not a German citizen and I don't live in Germany. |

> [Ingemar, That was only an example. You wouldn't be held , personally, responsible because you're not a Professional Hunter. You need a local guide with knowledge of the area you'll be hunting and what game you're after. That being said I don't believe there's a way to hunt without the license -- I could be wrong? How about some fishing? Some of the very best fly fishing in Europe is on the Kyl river and you'd be right next door to HillBilly Motors. I'm getting kind of homesick so I'll offer you a guided fishing tour ] |

I'm not looking for a way to hunt without a license. Like I said, I don't mind learning and I want to know what I'm doing. I'm not much of a fishing freak, but whenever you get back, give me a ping so we can get together. Wether we go fishing, hunting or riding, fun we will have. |

Some of the very best fly fishing in Europe is on the Kyl river I've never gone fishing for flies. Usually, they just buzz around and annoy me until I swat them. If you want to go fishing, I suggest Trout or Bass. |

You guys are too funny. You want to do some genuine quality hunting grab a .16 ga o/u shotgun and go chase a few birds. That's sport. Any moron can sneak up on a deer and blast away from 400 yards. That's why I'm afraid to even leave the house during the rifle season, most of these citified retards aren't absolutely sure what a deer looks like and will fire at anything that moves. |

i assume yer hunting in europe. i've hunted both continents and i gotta tell ya, yer deer are tiny but yer rabbits are huge. start with deer, easiest thing in the world to shoot. then move up to boar. love european boar hunting. go with guys who know what they're doing, and for boar, wear a sidearm and a nice bigass knife. learn shooting with a single shot and nothing else, hunt with a bolt or lever. i hunt 4-leggers near-exclusively with lever. (mod. 94) nice way to go. don't start bowhunting 'til yer good with static targets. i use recurve and longbow exclusively, but i don't advise you start with them. learn to id yer prey real good before even shouldering yer weapon. good safety practice. |

Ingemar: Greetings from Alaska. Come visit me, i have plenty of guns, and mother in law has plenty of cats that you can practice on. I have a 250 meter range in my backyard, and would be honored to have you send some lead downrange. Our last European guests Petra and Ralph from Alsace-Lorraine fired their first shots in my yard, and they had a bunch of fun. contact me if you are in a travelling mode. dean |

I assume your responsible,.. ? .. and would never kill game without eating it,.. right? make sure you will eat whatever you kill... that's why I don't hunt dear, I don't like their meat. Rabbits and squirrels are good for me, and not always an easy hunt, skill is involved in most cases. I just don't like dear meat, but there's this one young cow out in a nearby field that I'd like to take down. hehe JimS |
