I really like my Pentax Optio 550. 5MP, 5x zoom, will take 280+ 4MP pics on a single battery charge (depending on how much review you do). Fits in a shirt pocket. Lots of extras. It does have a lag esp if you don't hold it down 1/2way first. We paid about $350 2 years ago for ours. Sample unedited 4MP pics can be seen here like The California |

Littlebuggles...As has already been mentioned,if your only posting pics on ebay or here you dont need a high megapixel camera. You'll just be knocking them back to low resolution via software to even post. The Nikon Coolpix line is great and easy to use.The Olympus cameras are inexpensive and simple but good.As with any autofocus camera the lag time is due to FOCUSING time.In manual focus there is virtually no lag to taking the picture. It is from focusing and writing to memory.Shop at a local store till you find one you can use and then go on the web.I use bizrate and nextag to find best price. If your in a hurry and have FRY's around they are the cheapest.Good luck! |

300D is the MODEL number for the Digital Rebel. hmmm how bad is pushing the ASA... Oh about that bad...ASA/ISO 1600 3 second exposure f/5.6 18-55mm lens ambiant light from a Colman Kerosene camp light. And before anyone complains of it being a Budlight, its a dead one that was the only thing sitting still enough for a 3 second exposure. |

Ned, Thanks for the link. Nobody has mentioned the Sony's, I have wondered at their quality since I see the online for $100 less than retail. The Coolpix (3.2) has been going for about the same, online and local Best Buy. This years model has audio with video mode, I saw a rebate coupon on the box but don't remember how much. Considering the 950, lots of folks giving it props. Have taken some photography classes but they were mostly wasted on me. Not a lack of understanding, just like to let others take the cool pictures, mine are generally of the basic record an event type for the scrap book. |

I like the glow near the bottom of the Bud can where the shadow would usually be. Nice effect. Nikon SLR's have new fangled process to eliminate noise from higher ASA's. Looks like Canon does a pretty good job too but hard to tell from low res photo's, eh. The Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 is SICK. Very nice piece of glass. Steve-O |

Littlebuggles - A recent Consumer reports rated Sony Digicams as the most reliable brand of Digicams. I recently picked up an Olympus 540 at Office Max for $149. 3.2MP with a 3x optical zoom. Simple and straightforward. See pix on "Wordless Out West" in the Tale Section. |

having a load of fun with a Nikon D70. will shoot at ISO 1600, shutter lag is near zero.so far for picture quality it is superior to 35mm color print film. you might be able do do better with either expensive slide film, or some large format stuff of which i am unfamiliar.sunrise in backyard |

For a prosumer camera, I've gotta second (or third?) the Canon Digital Rebel. I LOVE mine. But, as noted, that's well out of the $200 range. Most of the reviews I've read of the Nikon Coolpix line have been consistently good, particularly for color accuracy in a budget camera. I've got a little Coolpix 775 that still gets used quite a bit for simple snapshots when my target is web or DVD (and mega-megapixels are overkill). And it fits in a jacket pocket unlike the Canon. |

Note that some coolpix models are better then others. The Coolpix 950 and 990 were basically professional grade digital gear in their day, some of the other coolpix models were consumer stuff. Not bad, but they don't have all the features I want, though even one of those in the tail bag would be useful for a lot of stuff. |

I'm really suprised no one has mentioned the Canon "A" series. The A60 goes for less than $200. Small, very functional, 2M pix, very easy to use. The A70 and A75 are less than $300, both are 3.2M models. I have the A70 and love it. I know of at least 6 other folks that have bought an A series after messing around with mine. My son has the A80, a 4M model. Very nice. A friend has the A60, keeps it in his truck for job site photos. He's not real careful with stuff and really beats the hell out of it. Not a single problem so far after 3000+ photos. (He's not very computer savy either, I have to burn all his photos for him....) |

Costco has the 4 megapixel Olympus D-580 for $199. Very small and lots of features. I have been using a Coolpix 950 since they first came out and would really have a hard time passing it up at todays prices, $100 to $250. It is built like a tank, titanium body, many exposure options, macro focusing, cheap memory cards, add on lenses, etc. It is truly "One of the Best Stuff Ever". Only weak spot is the switch, but it is a relatively easy job to clean it with DeoxIT when it acts up. |

If you want something with interchangable lenses than I would go with Nikon or second a Canon. These companies have a long history of designing new cameras that can use their old lenses. When you have a substantial investment in glass you hate to obsolete it when you buy a new camera. Olympus makes the argument that you don't want interchangable lenses with digital because the chip attracts dust when the lens is removed. Don't know how valid that is but all the pros use interchangable lenses so I doubt it is a big issue. |

The original question was about a camera under $200. I second Bluzm2, above...look at Canon A75. I just saw an ad today for one under $200...Target, I believe. |

I like my Nicon 3200 because it uses two AA batteries. That means I can buy new batteries at any drug store in the world and don't have to lug a recharger unit aroun with me. And two AA batt's last quite a long time. |

I surprised nobody mentioned the Sony DSC-707 or 717. It's a little bulky, but it has a phenomenal lens, and incredible macro focus (which is great for pics of MC parts when disassembling a bike). Can be used fully auto or manual. Check out www.dpreview.com |

I have a DSC-F717... and I love the camera. They can be had on ebay for reasonable prices. Some say it is better than the new DSC-F828... which has some first year model issues. I also have a MVC-CD250 that writes to small (3 inch) cd-r and cd-rw. I use it when I do projects. I take a gazillion photos before and during disassembly... then I can access them via cd rom drive to view them at a later date when everything goes back together... without cluttering up the hard drive with a punch of jpg files. The trick is... DON"T LOSE the little cd while the project is on hold waiting for time or money to finish the project. (Message edited by dasbuell on December 08, 2004) |

The January 2005 issue of MacWorld has a nice article detailing features of new digital cameras - which ones make sense depending on your intended use of the camera etc. A worthwhile read if you're shopping for a new camera. Henrik |

How 'bout the Hasselblad H1D. Heck, it's only $21,995, but at 22 megapixels, what a bargain!
