Bigdaddy, I lusted over that motherboard when it was announced, yet never seen one in the wild. And now it's quite old technology. 533MHZ FSB and all. However I do have planars(monsoons) for speakers on my Mac that I use for evcery day use 
Monsoon licensed the planar magnetic technology they use from Eminent Technology. They are wonderful sounding for a computer speaker.

I've always been a carver fan too. I'm tempted to get one of the sufire preamp/processors. Magnepans, while wonderful for most music, but har to integrate in to a good combo Audio/HT system. Magnepans are tough to match up with a good sub. At least that's what I've been told. So the ETs are a wonderful match. Very fun speaker. |

Assume I am not the only one who keeps Carly Simon "Playing Possum" around just to see how long I can get buy hanging the cover on my office wall.
We are such slime.....
I keep Beatles '65 close...something about the "very first time electric guitar feedback" was used on a recording (intro to "I Feel Fine"
Chambers Brothers, like Iron Butterfuly, just plays loud well...a fix for those of us who spent hours before JBL stacks.
Few things eclipse motorcycles...music may.

Vegas. COOL! A coworker's kid has been buying those HUGE old radios, restoring, and reselling them on ebay. Makin' a good buck on 'em too.

Yeah they bring big bucks! I have seen some of the older Bakelites bring over 2 grand!
I bought a stock of tubes from a guy here. I have a couple hundred of them. I love the sound of tubes. It is so much warmer and more crisp than solid state.

Those are incredible. I remember, when I was very young, sitting around one that looked like the bottom pitture in Hoyt, KS. I recall that it also made a great place to hide.

That is a Fairbanks Morse from the 30's. That was a total basket case and is still a work in progress. It was sold on Ebay and Fed Ex dropped the package and exploded the wood case. I have been slowly reassembling it like a puzzle. I am down to needing to get the glass and knobs for it now.
I enjoy turning them on and listening to whatever I can find. There is actually a station out of California that plays the old time radio shows on Sunday nights. It's pretty cool to still listen to Dark Shadows on the old girls. It gets me sometimes when I think of the news that these radios have sent through their speakers.
And yup... you could hide in the back of some of the bigger ones for sure!

I can have anything I want, I just show the lady how much fun these things are and play her favorite music for her, but luckily I was selling Hi Fi when I met my significant other. Right now I have Rega Mira, Rega Planet, Meadowlark Kestrel 2's in Penn. Cherry, all DH Labs wires and Vibrapods. Sounds really good, I also have a pair of Magnaplanars but not enough amp to run them.
Now I also have a 03 Suzuki LTZ-400 four wheeler and my 04 XB12R, now the wife wants a 9R. I guess I am just lucky. |

Oh yeah, My turntable is weak but my vinyl collection is growing, I found that my records will just about destroy any other format I have heard in overall sound quality, yes there is more noise but who cares, the textures of the music are much more 3D. |

Are you the reason James Taylor's hair fell out?
I agree that music is up there with motorcycles; it's kind of magical to push a couple of buttons and bring Johnny Winter screaming into your living room. This also tends to bring your significant other screaming into the living room but that's not quite so magical.

I've been in the doghouse for awhile now until I finally broke down and picked up some interconnects for our cheap DVD/VCR player and brought forth the glory of Harrison Hearthrob's voice in Air Force One and now the way is clear for a subwoofer amp (needed to bring out the full MANliness of Harrison Ford's baritone as he's punching out bad guys and saving the world).
Before, it was just more stupid loud junk that's way too big so set it up somewhere else but now it's just super. |

At the moment, a small NHT (SW1) and I just picked up an NHT MA1A amp for it which is in transit.
I don't know if this will do the trick or not but I stopped liking real low frequencies after a Sears air compressor injured my hearing.
I might end up going with a second SW1 but am not sure if an 80W sub amp will cut it.
I do know that all amps are not created equal and while I've heard good things about the Parts Express panel sub amps, do you think that there's any possibility they'd degrade the sound coming from the Magnepans?
It shouldn't but that's my concern. Any thoughts? Maybe figure out how to run another Carver into the NHT subwoofer amp if I go with two subs?
HSU and Adire were/are the other ones up for consideration but a passive subwoofer just seems to be the better design.
Oh yeah - the Mrs. now wants a big screen television to go with the speakers! Harrison Hearthrob, you're my hero. |

NEver heard any of the NHT subs, so I couldn't even begin to guess how they will work.
However, I have heard HSU, VMPS, and SVS subs, and could recommend ANY of them. |

What model?
I know one thing, having owned three models of Magnapans is that the bigger Maggies offer the cleanest bass I've heard coming from any loudspeaker. It's not an in yer face, overwhelming, booming bass, but modest and clean. They go as low as 34hz. And believe me, with a good amp they go there effortless.
Apart from the 1.6 models (small), I would never want a subwoofer with the Maggies. |

Ingemar, yup the bigger maggies make good bass. BUT, it's not the type I'd want for a combo HT/Music sys.
Music only.. Sure.
But I still prefer Eminents for all things musical
