Teenage boys admit to prank with plastic wrap, DA says http://www.jsonline.com/news/wauk/aug04/248805.asp 4 in Town of Waukesha may be charged with being delinquent, causing crash By JACQUELINE SEIBEL, DAVID DOEGE and REID J. EPSTEIN jseibel@journalsentinel.com Posted: Aug. 4, 2004 Waukesha - Four Town of Waukesha teenage boys have admitted they stretched kitchen-variety plastic wrap across a road, causing a motorcyclist and his passenger to crash, Waukesha County District Attorney Paul Bucher said Wednesday. "They've been very cooperative, very contrite," Bucher said. "It's what we thought might have happened: a group of kids trying to pull a stupid prank that they didn't give a lot of thought to." The boys, three are 16 and one is 14, each could be accused in juvenile court of being delinquent in petitions similar to what would involve felony counts of second-degree reckless endangerment if they were adults. The review and charging process for juveniles typically takes 30 to 40 days, "but we plan to expedite that," Bucher said. "We're going to do what we can to try and get it into court next week," he added. The 14-year-old is too young to be waived into adult court, and while it is possible for 16-year-olds, "I don't think the criteria that a judge has to consider are there (in this instance)," Bucher said. "At least I don't think so at this point knowing what I know now," he added. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department received more than 50 tips regarding the July 13 accident, said sheriff's Detective Steve Pederson. "We had more than one tip that pointed to two of the individuals," said Pederson, and two of the boys had been interviewed by detectives but were not arrested. Two days after that interview, Bucher informed the Sheriff's Department that attorneys for the four teens, including the two previously interviewed, had contacted his office. Bucher said the boys' parents were cooperative. "We had some leads, but we weren't near where we are now after getting their help," Bucher said. Sheriff Dan Trawicki predicted after the incident that it would turn out to be a prank that had gone wrong involving local residents. The incident occurred on Guthrie Road, south of Highway I, in the Town of Waukesha. Daniel Buckel, 22, of the Town of Waukesha has said he didn't see the plastic wrap until it was 10 feet in front of him. It was too late to stop, and there was no way to avoid the tightly wound clear wrap stretched between two traffic posts. Authorities and Buckel have described the circumstances. It was foggy at 1 a.m. Buckel and his girlfriend, Theresa Brzykcy, 19, of Brookfield were out for a relaxing ride. Because of the poor visibility, Buckel recalls traveling less than 40 mph when he hit the wall of plastic wrap. The 2002 Honda motorcycle slid across the pavement, and Buckel and Brzykcy landed on a nearby driveway. Buckel broke a finger and needed 15 stitches to close a gash above his eye. Brzykcy hit the pavement with her head and lost consciousness for a short time but was not seriously injured. Local attorney Michael Hupy, who has represented many motorcyclists, offered ,000 reward to any person who provided information that led to a conviction. He said Wednesday that Trawicki will determine who among the more than 50 tipsters will get the money. Waukesha County CrimeStoppers also added up to $1,000 to the reward amount. Buckel has hired Hupy to represent him. "I'm glad they turned themselves in," Hupy said of the boys, "but the main thing I wanted to do when I offered this reward was to make sure this doesn't happen to another biker." Hupy said he does not know the boys' identities but that the four had hired separate attorneys. Hupy promised to take no fee from Buckel, and to donate an amount equal to his fee to a motorcycle safety group. Buckel said late Wednesday he's relieved that authorities have identified the boys said to be responsible because it means he no longer has to worry. "It's less stressful not sitting around waiting any more, wondering if I should raise the reward, wondering what else I can do. It's a relief," Buckel said. Buckel, who lives with his parents and works as a bartender and selling motorcycles, said the crash caused him to miss a combined two weeks of work. He still suffers bad headaches and said he can't afford plastic surgery needed to repair scars above his eyes and nose and on his chin. "They're going to see that it's going to cost these kids severely," he said. "That's what happens for not thinking before you do act. Any prank - you've got to think before you do it if it's going to hurt someone. I'm just glad to be alive at this point." |

Here is my opinion on the situation... I have noticed, that Kids nowadays have "0" respect for others, and have no clue what concequences come from their actions. When i grew up, i had to pay for what i had, now a days i see kids driving around in BRAND NEW CARS! WTF? I had a POS Dodge, that i worked my butt off mowing lawns for the summer, to get the $500.00 to buy the POS. I realize that a good portion of kids are good hearted and well manored, but some of the kids out there i just want to find out what is going on in their sick little twisted heads.... Duhh someone will get hurt, your wrapping plastic wrap down a street... Just my little rant. I am also glad that the two in the artical made a full recovery and wern't seriously injured. |

i agree with you 100%, most of the good hearted well mannered kids out there would never do anything like that, these idiots should definitely receive harsh punishment for their crime. |

I'm proud to have the morals of my grandparents!! When I was younger, I was taught respect for my elders. Elders meaning not just parents, but EVERY person older than me. If I had pulled a lame brained stunt like that when I was growing up, I'd pray that I went away to help my parent cool off from the whippin I be getting. Too many liberal parents out there that are afraid to discipline their kids. I say spare the rod, spoil the child, bust the butt when needed!! Make an example out of these kids and show the results to all other schools about what happens when you do something stupid! Just my rant..... |

People in general now-a-days just don't seem to have respect for others. Watch people in stores stand in the middle of an aisle, then ignore you or have no clue you are standing there waiting to get by, then often look at you and not move. Or... walk through a door and let it go when you are right behind them. Or... someone walks into you or steps on your foot in a crowd, and never says a word like ...excuse me! I won't even go on a rant about driving courtesy!!! No one seems to take responsibility for their actions, or care that what they do may dramatically effect others!!! My most unfavorite modern catch phrase is "My bad!". I see that for admitting to be a cause of something, something that can't be missed, but that person is not apologizing for what they did. I see it as fessing up to the obvious without taking full responsibility or apologizing! Like someone just got caught at something. Yes I sound like our grandparents... I am 50! I have told my son, that if he ever does anything stupid like what this thread is about... the last worry he has is what the police/courts will do to him. As what respect and privileges he has earned as he has grown from me could very well go out the window and he will lose something much more than a fine or a period of personal freedom. Respect and my assistance from that point on... he would be giving up having me stand up for him when times get tough! As he would be breaking a trust, where I would fine it very difficult to believe what he said or trust him without limitations. Once respect and trust is lost... it is almost impossible to recover. This may seem harsh, but I see people in court every work day and many times parents continue to bail out a child to have them put them through it again and again. Showing no respect for the effort their loved ones make... abusing the bond and taking advantage of their unconditional love. Dragging their family down with them by not respecting them self and especially not respecting the trust of their family. I tell my son... think about others, treat them as he would want to be treated, think about what he does and how it may effect others... always be considerate of others. Yet... don't let people take advantage of this as being submissive or weak. That also seems to be a trend I have seen, seeing politeness as weakness and being submissive. The other day I was shopping, and a guy was standing in the middle of an aisle with his cart even further blocking the aisle trying on a shoe. His son tried to tell him someone wanted through, but he was too busy to even respond to his son. After waiting a bit I squeezed between him and a round rack of hanging shirts, pressing into the shirts to get through. Just at that moment he stepped back into me. He said sorry and I nodded my head to acknowledge his comment, and walked on. Then he yells down the aisle three times "Excuse me!" I turn around and he is looking pissed. I walk back and he says, "Hey, you walked into me!" I then tell him what I did, that his son tried to tell him he blocked others, and that he stepped back into me. I spoke quietly and calmly. He did not have another word to say and I turned and walked away. He saw himself as the "injured party" and was trying to intimidate me. Didn't work! Sorry... I am ranting!!! Anyway... people seem to only think of them self... at the expense of others. This is not the world I grew up in... and it is sad!!! (formerly dasxb9s) |

Last night Penny and I went to dinner here in Pueblo. Of course you can't smoke in the restaurants here(nazis) but while we were there a family came in with 2 small boys(at 10pm,why weren't they home in bed?)and the smaller of the two was whining and screaming from the time they got there until we left. I wanted to go over(1 table away of course,my luck) and kick the parents 8sses for letting their kid act that way. Yup, can't smoke, that might bother someone but people are free to bring their animals they call kids and can't seem to make behave in? They just sat there enjoying their dinner while the kid kicked over a chair, screamed, whined, cryed and acted like a little jerk. Maybe we need to pass a law that separates people without kids or people with the rare, well behaved kids these days from the ones that coddle and condone the type of actions we witnessed last night and all too often in todays world? I can see this kid growing up as the type that would have no respect for others as he has never been taught how to act. Don't even get me started on what would've happened to me if I would have EVER acted that way(can anyone say "wooden spoon?" ). I love my parents for teaching me how to act and that there was a price to pay for not. On the road! Dave+Penny |

sign spotted in a restaraunt in Fish Creek, Wisconsin "This is not a kindergarden Parents, please maintain control of your children at all times. Management retains the right to refuse service." HOOOFREAKINRAY! I spent exactly one dinner in the car, while my parents enjoyed their meal. Lesson learned. Just to make sure I had absorbed the lesson, my dad and I had a conversation when we got home. I remember sleeping on my belly that night. My duaghter, on the other hand, only had to have that possibility desribed once, and settled right on down -- she's much smarter than I am |

Being the father of 4 very active children who are all raised in a very similar manner I can honestly say they are all different, each with their own personalities!!!! You learn to live and deal with each one!!!! As for the 10pm thing, enjoy your kids, if they cant sleep let them stay up, watch TV with them, play a game, read do something with them. Its funny they always get enough rest. Then again myself and Colleen have been told we are too easy on them at times. They are all turning out alright. As for the Plastic Wrap - WOW, worst thing I ever did with plastic wrap was...................... |

Part of the problem is today, our parents would get arrested for making us sit in the car, let alone having a "conversation" with us. I do not condone beating a child, but a good smack on the behind or across the face if the crime is bad, like the way I see kids talk to their parents and other adults is just the ticket to get the message across. They aren't kids, they are little adults and were raised by a contracted third party, not the parents. Parents don't have time for kids anymore compliments of their careers. They have them on weekends and a few hours at night and don't want to be bothered with real parenting. Then they wonder why their darling little 12 year old is pregnant and the 14 year old is in the State Home for Boys. This really belongs on the Political Thread as failure to properly parent a child is a crime against humanity and a major cause of our declining social values. |

Uphill both ways? I made the mistake of joking about that with my mom one time. She got pissed and showed me the house where she used to live, then drove OVER the hill to the schoolhouse at the bottom of the other side. It may not have been 5 miles one way(about 1), but it was technically uphill both ways. That joke has taken on a different meaning since that day. BTW, I know my parents and I had "conversations" but I hardly remeber them becasue they were so early in life and I didn't need them as I got older. Danny At work, but hardly working |

Henrik...nice Python reference! I'm only 37, and I really didn't want to turn into my parents, but it is sooooo true. The KIDS these days have ZERO respect for anyone! I watch my nephews talk back to my brother in law and his wife all the time! It kills me what they get away with. Granted I was no angel, but I knew my limitations. I was taught about the consequences of my actions and accepted the responsibility when I did screw up. A good whoopin' is what these kids need. (OOOps! Shouldn't have said that...child protective services will come after me!) |

Outrider, You hit the nail on the head!! I agree that kid's don't need to get beaten, but if the little brat acts like an animal, the parents need to step in and provide "gentle correction". In my case (when growing up) that gentle correction involved going out to the willow tree to get a switch. The worst part of the punishment was picking my own torture implement and having to remove all of the leaves before handing it over to be used. I get goose bumps thinking of the welps they left. I guess I have a hard head and didn't learn all that well. |

across the face if the crime is bad, Mine were boys, and yes they did get a few spankings when deserved, but I always said I would NEVER hit them in the face and I NEVER did !! They were good kids, and good adults and when I see other kids I'm soooo proud of mine, even when they were little. It does take time spending with them, treating them as little adults, they can be talked to and reasoned with !! They also tend to take after the example the parents set !! So when they would go somewhere with us and see our reactions to uncontrolled screaming kids, they would get disgusted and roll their eyes at them too, and not act that way !! CJ |

I spent exactly one dinner in the car, while my parents enjoyed their meal My 2nd youngest daughter had a fit one day when we were at Pizza Hut. She was about 5-6 years old at the time. I simply stood up, picked her up & carried her out of the restaurant under my arm like a sack of flour. Put her in the car...it was parked right outside the window...& then I went back in & we all had a great dinner...well as good as you can get at Pizza hut..& watched her calm down after about 20 minutes. As far as spankings...hell I got a lot of em when I was growing up. I spanked my kids too & dont regret any of it. Only ever backhanded one of em tho. My oldest was about 15 or so & she was washing the storm door window with windex. One of my other kids came in the house & she sprayed her right in the eyes with the windex. Course the sprayee screamed bloody murder because that crap burns & stings like hell. It was a complete instinct reaction & I just back handed the sprayer so hard she actually got a bloody mouth from it. Now days some neighbor would see that & I would be serving 5 years...asinine. Dave...when we go to restaurants now days, the wife & I request to be seated as far away from children as possible. We have actually gotten up from a table & moved when a family with their brats..err I mean darlings has been seated next to us. |

well I don't have kids and mostly this is because I am a crappy role modle. yes I know myself way too well!!! But also because I actually appreciate the way I was raised, got the butt woopin when deserved, dang near every other day. I have a very colorful mouth and it has been in place since about 8 years old. and a very creative mind, that tended toward pranks. Heck I got butt woopins by almost every parent in the neighborhood, because thats how it was. and yes I believe it was right. what did the liberals say "it takes a village" well I got it by the whole village. and to this day I would gaurenntee you that is what has kept me out of jail (except for the 3 days for a DUI) I learned limits and knew what the risk was, and never did anything so stupid to get anything worse than what I got. I appreciate every swat I got, and deserved every one of them looking back. But hey it was fun while it lasted. sounds old, but kids these days have it too easy and we will have more prisons to hold them than apartment complexes , in time, to hold them all. lets face it and teach the friggin truth, every kid IS NOT SPECIAL OR EQUAL, some are smarter and some are more creative and some are better at sports, and so on, but they are not special or equal to all. why would you compliment a young mind , unless it really accomplished something. what happens is that someday they actually do something great and they get the same standard response " oh you are so special and good", well in their mind, its the same as it was when they achieved nothing special. so then why the heck should I try, is what goes in the human brain, which is a very flawed and lazy tool, that is like water and will always take the path of least resistance 99% of the time. so theres my rant...16 years old kids know exactly what they are doing and so do 14 year old kids.........screw 'em write 'em off....they wrote off the responsibilty they have to conduct themselves as they would want to be treated. |
