Ben Bostrom, entertaining the troops after winning Saturday's Formula Xtreme race.

1
Miguel took second...

1
and Jake took third.

paddock access all weekend was cool. there were maybe all of 25 fans on hand for these guys as they yukked it up with each other after the race, Ben taking heat for talking about his love of bicyling, Miguel taking heat for being a Canadian, and Jake...well, he was giving out all the heat. it was casual and fun.

1
Ben does Denise.

1
and so does Miguel...for the second time. his first autograph was illegible, and Denise was having none of that. Miguel was cool and signed it again.

a sneak peak of the new for '05 Buell XBATV...

1
...and Denise tries on the new XB-1350T, the answer for those of you who bemoan Buell's current lack of a true Iron Butt-ready touring model.

i was assured that the production version will come standard with a windshield...

while we were spying on the new Buell models in the Kosco pit, this sexy, sultry stunner caught my eye. it's a WAY bad hardtail running a Suzook TL1000 motor, built by one of the Kosco crew members, basically on spec.

1
flat black and flat bad, and painfully short on creature comforts, this bike has "Major Statement" written all over it.

this bike is a mule; new versions will get the SV1000 motor, with heavier flywheel, and more torque.

1
the builder fired it up (sorry, i didn't get his name), and it was oh-so-sweet, crisp, menacing, confident, and rude, with a smooth, sophisticated idle yet a wicked, snarling bark when it came up on the pipe.

i am so impressed with the creativity of people like this. you may not like the bike, and you may rightly conclude that it's impractical as hell, but i got to sit on it and work the loud handle, and i REALLY wanted to take it for a spin around Laguna Seca.

btw, that's a 450 Honda dirtbike front end sporting a Marchesini front wheel - looks good, doesn't it?

this is a cool story. D 'n me were leaving the track Friday night, surrounded by a shining sea of bikes. THOUSANDS of bikes.

i busted the double yellow to catch up with an XB-12 Lightning sporting a yellow Harley-Davidson factory plate.

i leaned over. "Hey, you work for Harley?"

"Yeah!"

"What's your name?"

"Uh, are you Ferris?"

i was stunned.

"It's me, Roger Roeszler!"

well, effin' A. we pulled over and shot the shite for about 45 minutes, catching up on old times, and scheming about the future. it was the only time we saw him during the three days we were at the track, and the odds of running into him this way were slim to none...and slim just left town.

we got to ride together into Seaside, but with all the traffic and the LEO's we couldn't be ourselves.

if you ever hook up with RR in Sturgis, ask him to show you the "back" way into Nemo.

and you better damn well be on your game.

Greg White must feel like he died and went to Heaven. he was an ok racer (albeit a little hard on Zuma scooters), but never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined people would some day ask him for his autogragh.

btw, a caption for the above pic comes readily to mind upon close inspection. look again and see if you don't agree.

on one of the hillsides above the track someone had hung a big sign that read, "Honk if you hate Greg White!"

pretty rude, but i'm betting with his sense of humor he probably tooted his own horn on the way by.

this bad little MoFo was built by Matt Guidera and the boys at Rocklin H-D/Buell in Rocklin, California.

1
i THINK the displacement has been bumped a bit, perhaps a little bore, maybe a little stroke.

1
i guess they're still working on a proper kickstand...

1
...oh, my bad, looking at the meat on the back it appears it don't need no steenkin' kickstand...

1
kinda hard to see in the pic, but it says "Firebolt XB160-R" (just kidding), as in 160 CID, injected, 114 octane, 70-inch wheelbase, 610 pounds with rider, with a best of 7.50 at a buck-eighty in the 1/4.

Erik, can you build one of these that'll get AROUND a racetrack???

Ducati Island. it's true. ride a Duck to the track, get treated like a VIP, ride right past all the other gates where most mortals can't tread, and park for free on your very own island.

it doesn't suck.

Bike Night, Saturday night, Cannery Row, downtown Monterey.

1
the very first vehicle i bought with my own money, way back in the fall of 1972, looked nearly identical to this.

it wasn't until the snow fell that winter that i caved and bought my first car.

1
these pix from Cannery Row are lame, but they're the best i've got. you need to see this with your own eyes at least once in your life.

the view from the bar at El Torito, at the north end of Cannery Row. the pic was shot thru several windows, and in a neat demonstration of cosmic synchronicity, the image above matches exactly what my weary old eyes were seeing at the time, as i was on my second (third?) Margarita at this point...

so, after mas tequila (where's Sammy when you need him?) we finally get seated for dinner, as it turns out right next to some of the most nefarious Hooligans the Monterey Peninsula has ever seen (outside of OUR group, that is).

from L to R would be Darryl "Sparky" Salmon and his lovely wife Jen, the infamous Jerry "Love Shack Attack" Johnson, Steve Brefka and Wendy, Eric "EBear" Barrows (new Aprilia owner!), Al "American Sport Bike" Lighton, Travis? (sorry, the mind is fading), ? (sorry!), ? (sorry!!), and Scott "US Route 66" Page, also a new Aprilia owner.

a seedier bunch of folks you'll never want to meet. probably best to not even make eye contact with 'em.

: )

If you take a closer look at that Buell dragbike you notice that the damn thing was a mirror image motor--don't know why,but pushrods were on left side and clutch and primary chain were on the right.Made me look twice.

FMJ, it would be interesting to find out why, eh? the kid they had working their booth new NOTHING about the bike, but he did let me sit on it and make vroom-vroom noises, so i went easy on him...

the Craig Jones "Have You Flogged Your Buell Today?" show, held on the front straight right after the second WSB race on Sunday.

1
it was a great spectacle. we really dug when he burned down the tires and then left the bikes sitting there propped up on the custom rear stands, little piles of smoldering rubber shrapnel scattered in every direction.

if you ever get a chance to see (and hear) this guy, just do it.

homeward bound on Monday, and as we turned inland from the coast at Cambria and started climbing, the temps came up, so the clothes came off.
1

1
btw, the immediate 180 acres of this view you see overlooking Cambria and the Pacific Ocean is for sale. see the road snaking up the valley? few know it's there, and it's a genuine peach.

let me know if you need the real estate agent's phone number...

Nah, I don't beleive it. You weren't there.

I was there, and you weren't.

I saw Dr. Steve.

I saw Dan Sabatino.

I saw Jim Armstrong.

I saw Al.

I saw Scott.

I saw Jerry, love shack Johnson.

I saw Barbara.

I saw Glen.

I saw a bunch of Buellers, and gaggle of VFR riders.

I saw tequilla, I tasted tequilla, I... forget what happened after that.

Wait, I do recall ogling a cute little red head... ; )

Next year I will track you down, and you will submit to an entire evening in my company. And I do not use the word "submit" lightly.

Blake, i slip much easier into submission mode after a few rounds of tequila, so...maybe there IS hope for us next year? ; )

1
we hadn't had enough ocean, so we dropped back down to the coast, to Cayucos (and a big platter of fish 'n chips), and stumbled upon the Tar Snake Proving Ground on the way. my tax dollars at work. : (

1
at the Creston (pop. 270) Country Store, above Atascadero, stocking up on drinking water in preparation for crossing the Carrizo Plain Nat'l Monument and beyond. neat place, friendly, clean. we soaked all our clothes in water for the heat we were already encountering.

1
where do YOU want to go today?

btw, the store is the launch point for one of the coolest little chunks of road i've ever stumbled on, one i've ridden by countless times and never noticed.

find Creston, CA, USA on your map, and head due south.

you can thank me 'n D later. : )

by the time we got to McKittrick, we were parched and needed more wet. the cool thing about riding home from Laguna is that in ANY direction, even in the middle of Fum Buck Nowhere, you'll encounter other riders who were at the track, including this bunch...
1
...which included our VFR, an MV Agusta, a Triumph something, an R1, and three Ducks.

1
of course, the sexy MV caught my eye.

1
two words: pure sex.

1
two more words: PURE SEX.

1
the rider of the MV was a small tour guide operator from Long Beach. the Duck riders were WSB fans who had flown in from Argentina and ridden this guy's fleet of Ducati's up to Monterey and were on their way back. nice work if you can get it.

Passin on a double yellow, eh Ferris? Jeez, you break the law just once and they're there to catch ya.

I had a most fortunate high speed blast home from LS, cops had cars pulled over everywhere but never me. Did 6.25 hours track to door, with a 15 minute stop for dinner and 2 other stops for gas. It was a very long ride after all day in the sun walking around at the track.

Can you do traffic school for a double yellow violation, or do you have to do court and get points?

this kind of stuff, believe it or not, is new to me. i THINK i can do school, but i have to contact the court (so the ticket says) to find out.

in spite of this it was a MARVELOUS ride down Highway 1, fog, motorhomes, and all.

wow, just over six hours from Laguna Seca to San Diego? we may have to change the name of the trophy to "Rides Like Al Lighton"! : )

I'd find a bulldog atty right off the bat. I let a "talking on a cell phone" go past, figuring "what the heck, it's no points".

It was no points.

Then I hear Vick scream....she was on the phone asking the insurance agent about the huge (read as HUGE) jump in the auto policy.
