grin -- well, I"m a chicagoan, but not all that knowledgable about (or is that aboot?) hockey -- it was kinda hard to avoid learning a little, though, back when the hawks were a force with which to be recokened {smile}

Hockey? I've heard of that. Isn't it kind of like tag-team wrestling on ice with sticks?

I'm just tired of the America bashing, especially by Americans. I'm sure if you could understand French or German you'd hear plenty of 'languge' at the TDF. Maybe you'd care to get Lance's opinion on the way he's been treated over there during the TDF for the past few years before proclaiming France some kind of utopia for sportsmanship and good will. I'm just tired of the America bashing, especially by Americans.

Congratulations to Lance Armstrong, Cancer survivor, American, Texan, Christian, the best ever in what he does.

Thang -- zactly! it's also un-naturally practiced, today, in places like Florida, and Southrn California -- these places had their own sports, of course, (gator wrestling and mud-slide dodging), but chose to import those from other parts of the world

No doubt, that whatever his origin, religion, political affiliation, or choice of beer, Lance Armstong is an amazing athelete

No doubt that he is also an American, a Texan, a Christian and a cancer survivor and that his status as an amazing athlete, aside from genetics is due in large part to his being all the above.

I certainly wouldn't downplay or dismiss his personal history, origins, or faith as significant influences contributing to his amazing success.

I am simply deciding to react to his performance as a human being, regardless ofg any of the other fact that helped make him who he is -- there are plenty of folks that share many if not all of traits you called out who are not world class atheletes -- I am not aware of what has driven the man to get to where he is, but I suspect that you are at least, in part, corrrect

I'm not downplaying any portion of his history or makeup -- I am also not trying to co-opt any of the above to support my world view ...

Bomber,
From my perspective, your prior post was an attempt to dismiss Lance's personal history and downplay his origins. Did I misinterpreted it?

Whenever anyone of such great accomplishment agrees with my views and shares common history, why should I not call attention to those facts? I don't get that kind of thinking, at all. It smacks of the same kind of revisionism that some seek to apply to the origins of our nation.

No Philly, I didn't read his book. Do enlighten us all would you please? I could be wrong. I based my comment on the fact that Lance ran the TDF with a very noticeable gold cross hanging from a chain around his neck. That is a pretty clear statement from someone who knows that all cameras will be on him. But please, do tell us what he said in his book. I'll need to get a copy for myself for sure. Heck, I'm headed into the big city of Longview, TX in mere minutes; I'll stop by the bookstore and pick up a copy.

Cheers all,

Blake

Blake

Yes, you did -- I was commenting on the politicalisation (is that a word) of sports, anbd how many folks can no longer just enjoy the skill of an athelete for what it is -- I was not downplaying his background or beliefs, just not commenting on anything other than his skill as an athelete -- (I also didn't comment on his divorce, as I know little to nothing about it's background/causes, and it has nothing to do with his athleticism -- that is one area you didn't compare Lance and yourself, I noticed, and with good cause)

not bringing something up is not equal to downplaying it -- but, as I've come to learn, there are some who will point to any similarity between the world views of a famous and admired person and their own as a supporting data point --

in short, I was not being revisionist, as I tried not at all to revise Mr Armstrong history, I was attempting to share comments about a superb athelete with it turning into a political/religious posting.

My mistake

Go Bruins! ; )

And Blake, I'm American and have lived in enough places across the world to know (for I and I alone) that there are places out there I would prefer to be. That is not some finalistic, ultimate truth statement, just my preference. And for it I prefer you don't lump me in with the political, social, economic, and religious heresy. The mere fact that I provide my positive, first hand insight into the TDF over the past 7 years, as well as my real life, day to day experiences of living in France and visiting different countries and cultures across Europe on a weekly basis, does not a bigot make me. Take my constructive criticism in stride and try not to get so caught up with different points of view on the menial things of this world. After all, that will leave us more time to enjoy the ride...

I wonder if age, gender and alcohol don't have more to do with rude behavior at sporting events than nationality? I'm guessing that a drunken young man from Germany, the U.K., or (gasp, even) France would be no more or less obnoxious than a drunken young man from the U.S.?

The only question is how many DYM from any given country will show up.

Young men from Texas seem to be the exception to this general rule.

Ray;

I'm sure you're NOT referring to ME!! I'll have you know that I am the very PICTURE of decorum and gentlemanly behavior!!

I am deeply offended by your gross generalization of...oh, wait...you said "Young" men didn't you?

Never mind....

Ken,
Not referring to you amigo. Was getting after my friends Bomber and Dave Gess.

Philly,
I don't find Lance's suspicions of organized religion or his beliefs out of step with my own. In fact they pretty much agree with my own views. I'm a Christian. Try again.

The DYM pictured above is obviously not a Texan.

No self-respecting Texan would be allow himself to be seen wearing a plaid gimme cap!

Ray, you should have called me while you were over & we could have met up to do some gender differentiation studies over a few drinks at a pavement café.

Tbd, I'm starting to worry about you, is it an age thing? or does your monitor screen need cleaning?

What Europe Thinks of Lance Armstrong

"On one point, at least, Armstrong's European critics are right. Striving for success, like following one's dream, is a quintessentially American trait. Taken together, the two have made millionaire moguls of uneducated "immigrants, powerful politicians of low-born nobodies, world-famous inventors of basement tinkerers, and great sports champions of disadvantaged youths like Armstrong. The natural home for ambitious dreamers, whatever their nationality, remains the United States."

Europeon jealously is palpable. And, it is understandable. Fact is, aside from England, what Europeon country can stand toe to toe with the US in anything important?

Certainly, in motorcycles, there is Buell and there is .......?
