I know this is a bit "off-Buell" topic however a buddy of mine in looking to upgrade the rubber on his 1200S and his dealer only "knows" the OEM tires. Anyone out there have a better option for some stickier rubber for a 1200 sportster? It's a 2001 model so still running the 130 rear. Thanks in advance! |

I don't know what is currently available, but I used to run Metzler's high performance cruiser tires on my spoked cruisers and they were fantastic in the tight stuff as well as the highways. |

When the 1200S first came out in 95 (as a 96) some motormag tested it with different tires/wheels to see just how far they could push the bikes handling. If I remember right they were quite impressed when they switched to 18 in. rims front & rear. Harley never gave the bike a chance by keeping it styled like a little Dyna. On both the 18s & the stock rims they gave Metzlers very high marks and thought not so well of Dunlops. Sounds like things haven't changed much. |

I suggest Metzlers too...on the Fat Boy I had those on there and several buddies with a Sportster, Dyna, and Road King preferred them since they felt better in both dry and wet weather. They are also a good quality tire all the way around. Michelins are good too and would suggest these over the Dunlops as well. |

The Avon AM23 Sprint Compound gets very high marks for stiction on a stock 16in. wheel..not sure for wear ability. |

Thanks guys. He's running stock rims so this makes it a bit more complicated in terms of rubber options - was looking at the 18" rims but too pricey over here. |

The V rated BT-45's from Bridgestone work very well. I had these on my '98 1200S and they are very confidence inspiring, with good grip. Very predictable tires with decent wear. Worlds better than the stock Dunlops, and I know more than one person who would recommend them over anything else, myself included. It's been a couple years, but they should still be available.
