TIA - Transient Ischemic Attack - A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a transient stroke that lasts only a few minutes. It occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is briefly interrupted. TIA symptoms, which usually occur suddenly, are similar to those of stroke but do not last as long. This occured to me Thursday night. The MedAct took me to the local hospital and I spent 18 hours undergoing tests, which so far have shown that my thyroid was low, but otherwise they have'nt identified a cause of the incident. The entire event lasted less than a minute and I feel perfectly normal today. I'm curious to know if any of my Buell brethren have experienced something like this. What modifications to your lifestyle have you instituted? So far I think my hope to return to flying may be dashed, but otherwise anticipate a return to mormal hell raising on the bike and full employment, pending an imminent job change. Anyone care to share your experience? |

Never had that, but I do have a leaky mitral valve which will allow the blood to flow backwards sometimes...get real lightheaded & the symptoms can almost mimic a mild heart attack. Did all the tests.. & the Drs say dont worry about it. Listen to your Drs & you should be fine. |

I'm Penny, Dave's wife and I'm glad you are ok and back to normal. 14yrs ago I had a stroke. I turned 25 in the hospital. I'm 38 now. It affected the right side of my brain. The temporal and occipital lobes. I have lost my peripheral vision on the left side to both of my eyes. Half of my optic nerve is dead now from lack of blood supply. Did you have an MRI & angiogram? I was first diagnosed with a brain tumor and sent to University of Iowa Hospitals. I was ready to die, I just didn't want to die bald! They did an MRI and said I had had a stroke. I've learned to compensate over the years. I ride an FXR2 and have rode in 31 states. I bought my first bike after my stroke, I don't let it stop me from doing anything because it could happen again anytime. The next time I might not be so lucky. If you have any questions ask me, I'm also a nurse. |

Tripper, Glad you mad it through this one OK. My neighbor (one of my best friends BTW) had one last fall while we were standing in his yard talking. Very scarey. I insisted he go to the hospital. He just wanted to let it pass but I made him go with me. Good thing too, the found a problem with his heart. He had a hole between the left and right atrium that never fully closed from when he was an infant! He was in the hospital for a week doing tests and stuff. One the day he was being discharged he ahd another one while the Dr. was standing next to him! Another 10 minutes later and he would have been on his way home.... Get this checked yout VERY throughly. The next one may not let you off so easy. Just out of curiosity did you have a metalic taste in your mouth or any visiual symptoms? Really glad your ok. Brad

Wow. I'm too tired to respond to you all as it is the middle of the night and I have been out with the family blowing off little bombs. Today I rode the Buell around in a T-shirt and hatless, something I have not done since 1984. I wanted to soak up all that the atmosphere had to give and besides, JMartz has been so passionate about riding hatless, I thought I should experience it again. I was able to wheelie well so apparently no ill effects are remaining. One new resolution I have made... the camera will be with me alot more, and on high resolution mode. Saw some B-A-eutiful things today. Happy 4th celebrations to you all.

Have the doc to Carotid dopplers to rule out how much blockage....May need an endartarectomy. TIA's are small warnings to change your lifestyle habits before the CVA. After the dopplers the MD may want to do an MRI but TIA's can return again if not managed |

Time to catch up to all'y'all's great input. My symptons were an inability to control my right arm. I realized immediately that it might be a stroke and turned to my wife to announce, STROKE, CALL 9-1-1, but of course it came out all dribbly as my tongue was leaden. The right side of my face went numb for a few seconds, then it subsided and I was back to normal. 15 to 30 seconds for the entire event. My wife gave me an aspirin and water and I was able to use my right hand as if nothing ever occured. The med-act response was very quick and a full battery of tests were run including all that were suggested above. When I was released Friday evening they had not received the results of all the blood work nor the heart echo-cardiagram. The Doctor is leaning toward the possibility that I am developing clots and I might have shed one. This is what stopped my fathers heart 8 years ago so I am likely to be prone to the same problem. I'll be visiting the doc again later in the week and he will have all the test results. Hopefully he won't tell me that Harley motors are bad for my health cause they shake too damn much. Thanks for all the advice and concern. It's nice to know that others share similar problems and have found their way through it. The Badweb has introduced me to many good people and I have been amazed at the struggles they or the ones they love have endured. Perhaps it is part of what makes this place so positive. Thanx to all of you. |

Hang in there Tripper. New view on mundane stuff huh? Having just had a MI, I'm now waiting on the clot/stroke thing. After overdosing me on rat poison ( warfarin ), I'm running life on minimal blood thinners & hope. I'm not allowed to do full contact martial arts till they reduce the dosage, & the cardiologist is anti motorcycle. "If you fall off you could die" No SH&!.!! Bless the Nurses, overworked & underpaid |

I found out the hard way and after the fact that I had one more injury from my car accident...a bruised heart that caused scarring around the outside of the lower left chamber. This scarring can in times of stress constrict the bloodflow on the outside of the heart making it pause in mid-beat. Do an EEG and it all shows fine, yet it freaked the operator out as they had a stethescope to my chest when it was happening while taking the EEG. I have to keep an eye on my stress levels but otherwise its all good. I do carry a couple of tabs of good ole asprin around with me just in case though. |

Tripper, Among your emergency gear, carry a small bottle of your favorite whiskey and a can of regular coke or pepsi. There was a pretty well documented study out of Brgham and Woman's Hospital in Boston that compared that combination as a control for the management of stroke and heart attacks. Proved to be more effective than all of the other available options and a hell of a lot easier to get in a hurry. Damn government and drug companies have managed to shut of all debate on the combination of an ounce of alcohol with the caffein in a bottle of pop, but I know of at least two cardiologist that always start their patinets with that while waiting on ambulance etc. Paul |

Tripper... I am so far ahead of the curve!!! I have been doing the alcohol and caffeine thing for the last few months as stress management. I have also been accused of being a carrier. Not having a stroke or heart attack, but causing someone to have one. I am so glad I was not with you... or I might have been accused of being the cause!!! After helping Sam with his XB and it grenading... had I been with you that day no one would have ever believed anything other than I was a factor. I have heard tons of good things about an aspirin a day. When my mom had her heart attack she took one and the doctors told her she did a good thing by doing that before the ambulance arrived. later!!!
