Well that sux!! had the bigwigs from our parent plant just notify us that the plant will be shut down by the end of the year. Good news is at least my department & our 3 lines they are going to keep intact & move them to madison. Supposedly relocation packages will be available. So its not the end of the world, still have a job just need to move 120 miles north to keep it. Be kinda cool living in madison. Guess by the end of the year I will be terrorizing madtown with the R1 |

Sucks, but at least you have time to consider your options. You might look at splitting the difference and looking at towns like Watertown, Jefferson, Fort Atkinson, Whitewater, "East Troy". It would keep your options open if the guys already in the new location decide to let you go later once they've dissected the knowledge you bring. I know someone right now who relocated out of state only to be laid off less than a year later and no other local work at the new location. If you do end up in Madison you'll be a lot closer to the curvy roads out there.

Mike, depending on how things work out, we would efinitely be looking at towns further east than Madison, the plant is actually in Deforest which as about 12 miles north of Madison. And a couple of us have already been told that they definitely want us & will help with relocation costs. All depends on if they agree to some of the terms we are laying out...basically a guaranteed job for X amount of time. Nobody outside of our plant knows a single thing about running the equipment we have or the products we produce, hopefully that will help in our negotiations. Yes I am trying to get all of my team members to make the move. Some are undecided, but we have time. Been thru layoffs & such, but never been thru a plant closing before. It was pretty wild when they announced it. One poor women who just purchased her new home 2 weeks ago started crying...what sucks even worse is her fiance also works there so its 2 jobs lost & a new home to pay for. At least the company is trying to absorb as many folks as possible into their other locations...course thay may have to move to Iowa or Georgia to do similar work. |

I've been through a few of them, mergers, closings, relocations, never been on the payout list though. It would be nice to have some earlier notice of stuff like this, but the employees are always the last to know, and it's why I try to keep a tuned 6th sense for indicators of this sort of thing (and also is why my desk is currently containing relatively no personal items beyond a cup-a-soup and a few tea bags). You'll probably do okay with your remodeling of your house and all. Worst case is you'll have to commute for awhile. You might want to contact the S&S guy out there for thoughts on where to locate yourself. Pingle is also out that way. Try to get any agreements as open on your end and as locked-in on their end as you can, it will only protect you. Keep us posted. And let us know when the move is, if I can help I will. |

Naw, dont be sorry..Lord knows Im not. Be nice to get the hell out of here. Been living in the same house for 18 years now & between the bar opening up on the corner & the new neighbors 2 houses down... who for some reason love to sit on the hood of their car listening to the worlds loudest car stereo play the most hateful rap music while they are dealing crack...its gone downhill bigtime. Cops have been notified & they are just today finally starting to watch the occupants, but with a slumlord owning the place its just going to be more of the same when these jokers are kicked out. A change of pace is looking real sweet. Definitely going to make sure I check out any prospective neighborhoods very carefully tho. Perhaps a 9 pm on a warm summer night would be the best time to get a feel for it? |

Dyna, that's the right way to look at it! It's an ill wind that blows no good... Had my last company sold out from under me, sat out of work for almost a year, then ended up where I am now--best job I've ever had! Change is good! r-t |

Dyna...Sorry to hear about your situation, but I have the feeling you, Dee and the kids are going to like MadTown a whole lot better. Not to mention all the great riding in WI is west and south of there. More than happy to help you out with the move. Have had to do it so many times in my career that I have it down to a science. Mind you, the science is telling others what to do, but still it works. LOL The worst thing you have going for you is the "By the end of the year" thing you mentioned concerning the shut down. Most leased in WI forbid you to move during the late fall and winter months compliments of the crappy weather and the likelihood of not being able to rent out the vacancy. Unfortunately, the same holds true for home sales. You can buy easily enough, but selling may be a whole different matter. Guess nobody wants to move their cherished belongings in a Blizzard, eh? Gosh, I am just happy to hear that you didn't lose your job. Good ones are so hard to come by in this State. Hope Dee got an offer out there as well. Most companies are pretty decent about that. |

The wifes company has a plant in madison so she could most likely transfer there. Probably just rent out my house for the time being to either my kids or the sister in law, wont sell it until im sure its 100% the right move to make. If need be, I would commute for a few months. Be about an hr & 45 minutes each way but short term it wouldnt kill me. Newfie....actually it would only take about 45 minutes by R1 The part that sux is indeed the end of the year crap. We have a lot of folks who have jobs where there isnt exactly a lot of skill required to do such as fork truck drivers, cleaning crew, some of the setuo & tear down folks. They most likely wont be offered jobs anywhere & will be out of work just before christmas. Totally sucks & I know there is going to be some anger, resentment & backlash directed at the company by a few of them. Hell im not exactly jumping for joy myself, but drop the ball now & give up & you can pretty much kiss any chances of relocating goodbye. Just going to be hard to get motivated to do a good job for the next month or 2 until everything is finalized. We have a big trial in the morning for Budweiser & so far after many months we are making some great progress towards a product they like. But after the news its hard to even care about it right now.

Dyna, Stuff like this is always a shock but usually works out for the better in the end. I totally agree with everyone else on the area...There's some good riding around Madison, Fort At, Jefferson, etc. Great riding, if you're on a new R1. Sounds to me like the glass is half full...... |

"Perhaps a 9 pm on a warm summer night would be the best time to get a feel for it?" We drove through our new neighborhood dozens of times before we bought our house. Morning, evening, late at night, good weather, bad weather, we even parked in the neighborhood during the Fish Days party just the check out the walk to downtown. Not once (apart from the wolf next door) did we get a bad feeling about the neighborhood and the house. As far as moving goes, start collecting boxes now, and start at least looking at your stuff to decide what will go, what will get dumped, what needs to be sorted through (like old paperwork from years gone by). Getting a slow head start on it now will pay off later on. Just some thoughts to ponder. |

Mike...I thought I was the only one that was that detailed in selecting a new neighborhood. LOL Best thing about moving is you get to sell, give and toss a bunch of stuff away. Is interesting to see what you know longer consider worth keeping. |

At least the company is trying to absorb as many folks as possible into their other locations...course thay may have to move to Iowa or Georgia to do similar work. I ended up here in Georgia, and I actually like it here. Year 'round riding, mountains are only 45 mins NE, Road Atlanta is 30 mins N. I do miss home though, but I've been employed the whole time I've lived here. |

Hopefully they are absorbing and not using the existing employees to train their replacements at the new location. Been through that and it stinks big time. |

Nope, its absorbtion. The machines are moving to different plants & they need more people to run them maintain them, etc. |
