That looks like fun. Too bad it's from the AMF era. |

Too bad it's from the AMF era. Everybody dumps on AMF, but without them, Harley would have died. They poured a lot of money into H-D, and increased production. Their biggest flaw was that they did not increase quality control. I had a '78 FXE, and it was as reliable as anything else that I'd previously owned. (It was more reliable than my CB 750 Honda) Something to think about; If it wasn't for AMF, we wouldn't be on this forum, because Erik wouldn't have worked for Harley then gone on to build such magnificent paint shaker powered motorcycles. |

This happens to be something I have always taken an interest in....how companies learn from their "mistakes". A company, like life itself, is not perfect. The bad will either lead to a good thing or it will end itself naturally. This definitely applies to Harley and Buell...consider both of their pasts and where they are now. |

Yep a 250cc Italian made two stroke single. The later version of this motor put out 32 hp. It is the same motor HD used in their MX 250 motocross bike. AMF even gave HD a motocrosser. I wish HD would branch out like they did when AMF owned them. Regards Mike

I used to have one of those MX 250's, Pretty reliable bike. I can tell you I was not kind to it. I just wish I would have kept it. |

AMF bought Aermacchi (now Cagiva I believe) and sold Italian built strokers under the HD badge mid 70's I think. |

Crusty has it nailed. The Produciton increase AMF pushed through caused major quality problems because the bikes were not designed to be built that fast. Many of the parts needed to be fitted together on the line and if time and care were taken they would be OK. This taught HD to design the bikes for ease of quality assembly. Buell has taken this lesson to perhaps the highest level of any bike maker. The second thing about AMF is they did spend a lot of money and they spent it on tools and equipment to move HD into the odern era of bike design. HD did not have the resources to do this themselves and would have died a slow death like the the English companies becasue of this lack of investment. AMF really saved HD from certain death. The big plus form AMF |
