Torque Differences. Looking at Hard numbers from Motorcyclist, The 03 XB9S dyno'd at 92.2 hp @ 6750 Rpm's with 71.9 Ft/Lbs torque @ 5750 Rpm's The Speed Triple at 113.7 @ 9000 Rpm's with 78.2 Ft/Lbs torque @ 6250 After ownership of one S-1, two S-3's and two X-1's I can tell you that the Speed Triple is the closest thing to a Buell ride. (or to replace it. Loads of Torque and loads of Hp from 2000 rpm's it rips untill the 9500 rev limmit. It handles as well or better than any Buell i've owned and has rock solid reliability. We have 3 Triumph total, two 02 Speed Triples and an 01 Sprint ST. Loving every twist of the wrist. Oh, I did have a problem with the Sprint!!!!!, at 20,000 miles the friggin left headlight went out!!!!!!!!! Damn Donkey Bikes! In The Rain Forest, Bob

plus, that triple in MI:2 looked really cool! even kept riding with bullet holes in it and automatically switched to dirt tires on the beach! that tom cruise is one helluva rider |

As compared to a Buell, the Triumph is down a little on torque at lowest rpm's, but.......... I found myself riding my M2 at around 3,000 rpm and loving the torque from 3-5,000. The Triumph motor feels right (relaxed, not hyper active) at about 4,000 rpm and it's got gobs of power from that point up to the 9,500 red line. I view the Speed Triple as a newer, better M2. It gives up a few points in the exhaust sound department, but offers 112 rwhp in return. The Triumph will do an honest 150 mph and will have all of it's parts attached when you slow back down. It's got character, style, and lots of after market parts. It handles at least as well as the M2, doesn't drag it's pegs in every corner and gets about 45 mpg. In actual practice, the chain drive is less hassle than a belt that breaks every 10,000 miles and you can change the size of the sprockets. Tune-ups are more expensive because of the non-hydraulic valves but are less expensive than repairing a perpetually broken Buell. When you change the oil you don't spill a quart on the voltage regulator and you don't have to pour the new oil into a vertical hole on the downhill side of the motor, and it doesn't puke breather mung all over itself. I love my Y2K M2 but when it's time to write a check I'd go for a Triumph every time. |

When you change the oil you don't spill a quart on the voltage regulator Thats one thing I hate about my HD, you cant pull the filter off without spilling oil down the front of the motor & onto the front motor mount. |

Just found out about an X1 White Lightning with full race kit, only ever used for a few track days, 512km on the speedo (not sure how to believe that), but apparently in immaculate condition... It's in a different state, but I think this might be the bike for me Anybody want to buy an old GSXR??? LOL

Dyna,I punch a couple holes in the filter 1 at the bottom,1 at the top and drain the oil in the filter out.Then take it off,solves the oil all over the voltage regulator and front mount problem. |

haven't tried that trick with the two holes. i put folded v tinfoil under mine to my pan and complete taking it off when the oil drip slows to a crawl. the triple (sprint or rs) is calling loudly. tim |

A healthy 'tractor motor' with clear breathing passages can easily apply 90+ ponies to the pavement with torque galore. Yeah,I got one a doze---down a little from the 121+ that it was with the open pipes,but ALOT of HP nonetheless.Oh,but it's FUN!!!!

Grab an old glossy brochure or piece of junk mail from that unsightly stack of throw-away papers on your kitchen counter... put a gentle curve in it and shove it up under the filter... the oil runs down the paper into the drain pan... spilling none. Simple. Clean. And it's easier and quicker than poking holes in the filter. Steve |

I have a friend who is on his second Speed 3, and they have not been exactly trouble free. The price of parts is also very high. Smadd's paper trick is the oil filter answer- I don't spill any either. |

God am I good or what. When I posted the torque values for the Buell I wrote XB9S. (It was an XB12S) I had the Speed Triple out for a Track day at Pacific Raceways Friday. Had a Blast!!!! I only saw one Buell and no Tubers on the Track. Kind of suprised me. The guy on the Buell was new to Motorcycling but I could see steady improvement through out the Track Day. Life is good, Bob
