I need to replace the speedometer cable on my '98 S3. Before I order it from Buell, does anyone know of alternate sources? I figured that, like locks, brake pads, and other parts, the cable might be available elsewhere. Thanx.

Steve,

I really don't think you can beat the OE part. I just picked up a new speedo cable from my local (within 50 mile radius...) Buell dealer and it was only $16 something with tax.

However, once the motor company obsoletes these parts for older bikes, it sure would be good to know where to go for some support.

Where is your dealer? I'll check your profile.

None of my "local" dealers have it in stock... and the closest ones that could ship it say it costs $26! A bit steep for a cable... having to add shipping on top of it. I agree... I always feel OE is the best. I was just saying that I doubt that the speedo mechanism and cables were manufactured specifically for Buell. I was hoping another manufacturer might use the same cable in one of their models. I know... probably a long shot. But I thought I'd give it a try here before I spend 30 something bucks.

Oh... an example I found of parts being available elsewhere: I lost part of the lock on my tailsection quite a while ago. A "fix" from the dealer was going to cost apx $100. I took the remaining bits of the lock to the local locksmith. He had the exact same lock... new and complete.... and rekeyed it for me to match for $16!

26.55 is list price for the cable.
I don't have one on hand but would be happy to order it for you.
After the Badweb discount you'd pay 23.90 plus shipping but no tax.

Dave, I JUST had my speedo give out on me. Could I get the price for a cable and speed sensor for a 1996 S2 from you? I don't like the cost that my local dealer gave me on labor so I may try to fix this myself.

If it's just the cable that broke it's an easy fix. Hardest part will be removing and reinstalling it from behind the speedo. There is no sensor per se like on the electronic speedometer bikes. Labor should be 30 minutes or less by removing the screws and lifting/tilting the dashplate for access, one hour if they have not done one before.
I could be wrong and often am. ; )

Undo the cable from the front wheel and see if you have any cable sticking out. I had to pull the broken cable stub out of the wheel drive with needle nose pliers on my S2.

Doughnut,
By sensor, do you mean the drive unit? 1996 S2's don't have a sensor, they are cable driven?
If you need the cable it is 15.40
the drive unit and I have one in stock is 54.00
I would need to order the cable.

Total for both pieces 69.50
after badweb savings 62.55
plus shipping, unless you come up and get it, and tax.

Thanks
Dave

Anyone know how to tell if it was my cable or drive unit that killed the speedo short of taking them off / apart? The cable appears to be intact from the outside.

Daves, since everyone is on the subject of parts, I am going to need a few also.
-Primary gasket kit
-updated detent plate
-retaining ring for detent plate
so far, but the list may grow by the weekend.

My speedometer cable seems to go out about every 20,000 miles on my 97 S3T. I just use the inner core from a sportster to replace the broken one from my bike.
Cheap, cheap, cheap.
Lube, Lube, Lube.

I can tell you happened to mine, but your experience may vary,
the cable locked up, i didnt lube it, and it went bad, when it locked up, it also locked the drive unit by the wheel, which in turn broke the tab on the drive(the tab fits in a hole in the rim) so best bet, pull your cable, and inspect it, if it comes out easy, it should be fine, if it is jammed in any way shape or form, its toast, check to make sure the tab on the drive is also intact, otherwise you need both

Grndskpr, The tab is good on the drive unit. I tugged on the cable and it DID NOT want to come out. I got it out a little and could see the cable / wire.

Sound like all I need is a new cable?
