I think its about time to replace the original battery in my 98 S3T. Which batteries have you used as replacements? Has anyone tried the Odyssey battery that is sold frequently on E-bay?

YUSA is what I bought when the XB's bit the big one. Works good so far.

The Odyssey works well - don't need to charge it during storage. Get it with the metal jacket (a couple of dollars more): PC545MJ, the jacket helps with vibration and shields the heat off the rear exhaust pipe. I had to bend the hold down strap slightly to get it to fit with the metal jacket. Technically probably the best battery currently available.

"ODYSSEY® Drycell™ Batteries
SHORT SERVICE LIFE
In Custom V-Twin Motorcycles"

http://www.odysseyfactory.com/v_twin.htm

quote:

Issue – This notice provides helpful information to the designer, manufacturer, assembler, dealer and bike owner that may have experienced a short service life with the ODYSSEY Drycell Battery model PC 545MJ installed in Custom V-Twin motorcycles.

The increasing popularity of the custom V-twin motorcycle with its big inch engine and high power starting requirement has introduced a new operational issue. New ODYSSEY batteries and other brands initially provide good starting power, but in a short time of use have no or poor starting power and appear to have prematurely failed.

Factory analysis of warranty returned batteries indicate these batteries have not failed and do not have factory defects. Batteries with this type of performance are at low charge levels only!

Cause - The custom bike requires 2 ½ times the starting power of stock HD engines, but have the same size battery and same 32 amp charging system. The custom bike is generally a short mileage in-town rider, with insufficient driving mileage to recharge the battery. V-twin charging systems only develop enough power to run the motorcycle until engine rpm is above 2,000, when excess power is diverted to charge the battery. Full charged ODYSSEY battery voltage is 12.85 volts. ODYSSEY Batteries with less than 12.40 volts cannot reliably start big inch engines.

Solution – ODYSSEY Batteries are a military grade design and mechanically indestructible. Military design prevents shorted cells and vibration damage. They provide deep-cycle reserve and high starting power. Use a 12 volt 6 amp “Battery Tender” charger (Drag / Parts p/n 022-0071) with dealer or owner installed quick disconnect harness to maintain ODYSSEY at full charge for maximum performance and life. Always connect the charger to battery first, then plug into the AC wall socket. Always unplug from the AC wall socket before disconnecting from battery. Charger will not over-charge as it switch’s to storage charge after recharging. Charger has red and green LED’s indicating bulk, transition and storage status. Consistent use of the Battery Tender charger will assure trouble free starting power, with 4-8 years of ODYSSEY service life.

Help - For ODYSSEY technical support call Bruce Essig at 660-429-7506.

So, buy an Odyssey, ride a lot, keep it above 2,000rpm, and be happy.

I used one, on my S1. Did'nt fit. Too long. I had to reconfigure the entire battery tray. I see it losing charge quite a bit.

Makes sense,. as the docs that came with my HD heated jacket say that I should be doing 2500 rpms before turning on the jacket, if I want to be able to start the bike later <grin>

I'm probably replacing mine (stock battery still) in the M2. I've got a small drain someplace which I suspect is in the alarm system, does fine when rode regularly, dies/drains-out in about a month or less of non-use. Pricing the Odyssey at Batt+ today.

use the harley battery, they are built by yuasa, in Reading, PA very good quality. they put out substantially more then their rated power. unlike the odyssey, every one of which i have tested has been junk. look carefully at the odyssey specs, you will see that they are actually rated LOWER in CCA then the stock sized harley battery. the yuasa brand battery is also marketed by Interstate Battery Systems, same quality product, differant label. the interstate costs a few bucks more than harley shop, still good stuff.

the Interstate Battery part number for the S3T is YTX-20L-BS same battery as HD65989-97. also fits sportsters, and some dynaglides. rated at 270 CCA, most new will test at 350 CCA. my original sportster battery, built in july of 1997 was still starting my 11 to one compression stroker motor when i removed it after crashing in 2001. that battery IS STILL IN USE. i gave to a friend that helped scrape me off the pavement, he has it in a BMW R80 GS. that battery is now almost 7 years old, and starts his BMW at 20 degrees F.

I have to agree with Fullpower. Years ago I was lucky to get two years out of a HD battery in my Superglide. I still have the original HD's in my '00 Sportster and '00 Road King. I think 4 years plus is a great life span for a battery in a HD. FWIW I have had a Big Boar battery in my Boarget which is also approaching 4 years old so I am impressed with that product too if some one needs a high CCA piece,

Frank
