Later I used to spend lots of time on the farm of a co-worker who still lives there and my son's girlfriend is from Baldwin (I know . . . I know Baldwin CITY) I used to get up early in the mornings on weekends and head our Highway 40 from Topeka. I'd take the old Farmers Turnpike and then had a route I used to time about Clinton. I'd come down behind the damn, blast down that straight and cross 59 and head to Baldwin for coffee. Nothing like the sound of a heavily modified XR-1000 in the still morning. I paid for my 2nd semester at KSU thanks to overtime from the ice storm that took that 345kV line, that crosses East of 59, down about the time I'd gone totally broke buying a Gibson J-40 (still have). Douglas County is, in a way, an anomaly and it's damned addictive. One of my best friends is a Federal Judge in Topeka but refuses to live anyplace but Douglas County. Even my wife, born and raised in Brooklyn, loves wandering Mass Street. I'm on the verge of making another impromptu trip! Now your secrets out! | ||
