I am looking for a scenic route through the Catskills and The Adirondaks and then to Montreal or Ottawa. What would you do? My trip is around August 27, 2009. | ||

You probably want to end up on Route 22 which will take you all the way to Montreal. Nice mix of mountain roads and small towns. I think Harley Davidson once rated it one of the best roads in New York State. I've only taken it as far as Lake George (about half way) myself. | ||

I have only run 22 from Lebanon NY-south,but agree with Jaimec. Its a fantastic ride.I recall heading down to Pawling,NY enroute to Danbury Mass. Gorgeous! | ||

HINT: (DAHIK) - There are TWO Bethel, NYs. There is one that is near the CT border, East of the Hudson River. The one you are looking for is West of the Hudson, about 20 miles from Woodstock. Good news is that you'll have a gorgeous ride whichever you choose. I ride in both areas quite a bit. | ||

I've ridden NY Rt.22 from just below the Canadian Border to the Mass. Pike (I-90) It's a beautiful winding road with light traffic for the most part. If you're on a Uly, you'll really enjoy it. | ||

Route 22 runs the entire length of New York State from right around Brewster to the Canadian border. He can meander through the Catskills and Adirondacks if he likes but if his ultimate destination is Montreal he'll eventually want to end up on 22 (unless he wants to Interstate it on the Northway). I'd recommend riding through the Catskills and Bear Mountain... cross over the Hudson on the Bear Mountain Bridge and work your way eastward till you hit Route 22. Then just follow that all the way north. | ||

I used to live in Bethel! I lived right beside the original Woodstock. Rented a small place out behind the tennis court of some rich guys very big house, owned some kind of toy store or something  . Nice place to ride, I want to go back sometime and show my family but I'll have to wait until the finances are better. I also lived in Cochecton, Narrowsburg and Staten Island. And now I live in Florida, not many twisties here but I love riding all year. | ||

22 is nice, but if I were making this trip, I would head straight north out of Bethel and take 206 to Rt. 30 all the way to Sacandaga Lake - then take a loop around the lake if your in the mood for some good twistys, or at least go across the Bachelorville Bridge (rather than around the southwest end of the lake). Then I'd turn off onto Rt. 8 and take that all the way to 9N at the north end of Lake George, then pick up 22 in Ticonderoga and stay on that all the way to Ontario. Google Maps says it's a 12 hour ride, but I've found google to really overestimate times, and I bet it's more like 9 or 10. | ||

not sure its a left off 209 just north of ellenville we make a right onto 55A on the vid by the roundout resavior I think it is. But that section of road I could wear out a set of tires on I love it!!!!!!!!!!!! | ||

Rt 55 is pretty good for that. Exclude the part where it follows 209, but all the way to Highland has some great turns. | ||

Rt. 22 is friggin BORING till you get up into the mass area. I would highly suggest Xl120r's route if it's twisties your looking for. Much more scenic too! | ||

Nothing on my route is particularly challenging unless you take the loop around Sacandaga, but scenic it is. Rt. 30 is really nice, 8 along Brant Lake is really nice, and 9N also has some spectacular views. The better scenery is in the heart of the Adirondack Park, so if you have some more time, you can work in Rt. 30, Rt. 3, Rt 86 or 73 and ride by Indian, Saranac and Tupper Lakes, and Lake Placid. You'll find more majestic and rocky mountains and cliffs. Not that you'll miss out on the other route - pretty much the entire thing is a beautiful ride - but if you have time, hitting those nothern lakes are worth your while. |
