Interesting.... I just picked up a similar Scorpio unit for my bike, but it lacks the whole gps/gsm part. It can report to the remote instead. | ||

That seems like you get a lot for your $200. Almost too much stuff for too little money - maybe too good to be true. Their website has some interesting stuff on it. They sell signal blockers, which would be awesome to mount in the topcase of the Uly, running off an inverter. Just block all those cell phone-using drivers out there... | ||

and for us cheapskate DIY's, I just found this on one of my scooter forums. Sounds like a low cost and low service cost solution if I could wire into the bike's 12v system. "I have three new, in-the-box, as-yet unactivated Boost Mobile Motorola i425 cell phones. These can be had at most retailers for $40 + tax, and they all come with $5 of pay-go calling credit. The pay-go rate is $0.10/minute, 24/7/365, and text messages are $0.10/ea., either direction. The cool thing about these inexpensive phones is that they feature GPS (which can be turned off, by the way, for you international people of mystery). No other fancy features -- no cheap camera, no Bluetooth, no mp3 player, etc. Using a free web service, mologogo, you can plant this on your scooter, and know where it is at any time. I had planned to start a business around these phones, but there are some caveats. First, Boost/Nextel is not saying they absolutely will support the iDEN network on which the phone operates past 2010. Second, the application itself will drain the fully-charged onboard phone battery in about 8 hrs., if polled every 5 minutes (you can adjust the polling interval to conserve battery life, but beyond 10-15 minutes, it starts to lose some of the "real time" advantages, of course). Most importantly concerning my business plan, Zoombak came along, and even though it's pricier in terms of all costs, it seems to be a very good, simple product, from reports I've read. If you want one of these puppies, I will load it with the mobile Java GPS application, and configure it for use with mologogo. I'm selling them for $60/ea., and throwing in a 12V car charger to boot. If you don't have a cigarette lighter adapter on your scooter, you can hardwire the unit if you're handy. " | ||

The problem with most of these GPS tracking systems is not the actual device, but the back end service to support them. Zoomback is one of the first consumer friendly companies that has solved this. The only downside to zoomback is that it relies on T-mobiles GPRS network. So if you are in a dead zone, you can be tracked. I have looked at several other systems that use Inmarsat C, but the equipment size, and cost make is cost ineffective for 99.9% of consumers. Most are marketed at the yacht market. As for Lojack, their motorcycle service is not very widespread yet, and you have to hope the local PD have the tracking equipment. |
