I just installed new total seal ring,Millinuem told me the the new HD synthetic oil was fine,I read something off the net that said, dont use synthetic oil for breakin, that it was so slippery that it arrests the break in process before the rings can seal completely. This guy reccomends taking synthetic oil from the factory out during the first 1500 miles.I thought the new HD oil was and is ok for breaking in new rings?

Myths & Legends. The HD synth oil is fine for break in. So is Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec, for that matter.

I do, IMHO recommend changing oil & filter in a new bike at 500 miles or even sooner, to get the first batch of metal shavings out. Then regular manual listed intervals are fine. (hardcore cheapskates will use synthetic oil for 15,000+ miles in their Volvo's with regular FILTER changes) Always change filters is my rule.

Even the best oil breaks down. Additives get used up. Acids form. Change your oil and filter often and your motor will last a lot longer. If you change your oil too often, you use a little more money. If you don't change your oil often enough, you'll kill your engine. Financially, it takes a lot of oil changes to equal a motor rebuild.

Rich, as the others have pointed out synthetic is fine for breakin. HD ships their CVO Screaming Eagle bikes with synthetic in them.

I wonder if that old myth about being too slippery will ever die?

The tractive coefficients (measure of slipperyness) of mineral oils and synthetic oils are virtually the same. The only reason to break-in a modern engine with mineral oil is that the low mileage oil changes get expensive when using synthetics.

There is one good reason not to use full synthetic for breakin....

You probably want to change your oil 3 times in the first 3500 miles. I do it at 500, 1500, and 3500. I then resume a normal 3500 mile interval. With those first two short interval changes, synthetic is just expensive, and not really buying you anything.

It does not hurt either, though.

Synthetic oil will cause your seals to leak. I ruined two pair of underwear when I first switched to full synthetic oil. I'm back on extra virgin olive oil for now.

And WD-40 on your headlight will NOT cause your light to work better by making the glass more slippery, because WD-40 is NOT a lubricant!

If you have to ask you will not understand.

Sorry don't mean to offend Synthetic oil and Tyre contact patch are a couple of threads that return every now and then and in the past have become very heated.

BTW Paul, good luck on your upcoming LSR races.
When is the event?
Leave 5th March racing starts 8th March.
