Very cool photo I found a link to this morning. This is what you would have seen on 129 near Robbinsville, NC on your way to the Dragon ~47 years ago: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=27541 2&nseq=5 The Graham County Railroad branched off the Southern RR (now the Great Smokey Mountains Railroad tourist line) at Topton, NC south of Robbinsville. It followed 129 (including those first climbing twisties where you leave Topton) to Robbinsville. IIRC there are still a few abandoned tracks in downtown Robbinsville. Graham County ran steam a LONG time after it was gone from most other railroads. This locomotive was saved and is under restoration in Pennsylvania. Sister engine #1925 now operates at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. (Message edited by hughlysses on March 12, 2009) |
