the wife is heading up to wisconsin to be with the daughter when daughter's baby is born. and one of thing that worries me worse than going through atlanta is her driving around chicago. need the best route to get around the city coming from the eastside. any help would be appreciated. | ||

You may wish to take the ferry from Muskegon, Mi. to Milwaukee. Chicago traffic is nasty. | ||

Everyone says the traffic is nasty but I've driven through Chicago twice and while the traffic was heavy it moved. Maybe I got lucky or maybe nothing compares to DC traffic | ||

That jet ferry is wikked cool! I took that on the way over to homecoming 2007. It crossed in 2.5 hours and served beer  expensive though. | ||

80W to 294W to 94W. Best time to drive through there is usually really late at night...Then you could just take 94W and go straight through the city. Anyways...I drive through there every month, I typically go 94W straight through on Friday at afternoon, but usually hit traffic after Lakeshore, sometimes a standstill... On Sundays I take 294 back to South Bend and it's usually smooth sailing. I'll try to remember to take 294W there this Friday and report back....If I remember, LOL... The ferry is shut down for the winter. Just stay on the toll roads and be patient. I hate driving through Chicago also but it can be done by the novice, just stay on the toll roads. Or route yourself way to the west of the city. Going across the UP this time of year can be iffy because the roads can get real bad fast. | ||

If she's going to be in Chicago on a weekday between 6AM and 8PM, it's best to take I-294. Be sure she has cash for the tolls, $20 should cover it. Outside those times or on weekends shoot straight through the city on I-94. It's faster and there's only one toll booth to deal with. | ||

Alternatively, if she is going through Indianapolis, she could take I-74 to I-39 and bypass the city completely. It's longer but much smoother sailing. It depends on what her destination is. | ||

i was wondering if there was a ferry but apparently not this time of year. then she could have easily went and stayed the night with my mother outside of columbus then went up through michigan and avoid chicago area alltogether. she'll be going up to brillion, in between appleton and manitowoc. i was looking at 39 and it is a good bit out of the way but if the toll road is the best if not more secure way to go then we have to look at that route. i haven't been through chicago since i went through "A" school in the navy back in 75 and i didn't like it then and i'm sure i wouldn't like it now. but that's the way the wife has to go for the most part to be with the daughter. thanks for the input. as soon as the wife knows for sure when her last day is we'll be making plans and know which day for sure she'll be going through which will determine which way to go. | ||

At least she won't be on a bike. I came around Chicago when I came back from Homecoming in 07. It seemed like they would stop you for a toll every 10 miles. Gotta love dealing with tolls on a bike.  BTW, Congrats Grandad.  | ||

Neil, If she doesn't have an EZ Pass, find out if all the states on the way accept it, and get it. It is one helluva convenience not having to stop for tolls. Oh, and if she'll be coming through South Bend, IN and I don't have drill, she can borrow mine. | ||

thanks jim. at first you think that your not old enough to be grandparents but being that my sister inlaw is a year older than me and has i think 8 grand kids(none of which are twins or octuplets) doesn't mean you have to be a certain age. but it's waring on me and my wife really doesn't want to be the long distance grand parent at this time of which nor do i cause the thought is growing on me. hey wilson, let me see where that route will take her cause you are right about the ez pass. i had one the last time i was working back in florida(sunpass) and it sure made life easier. even on the bike. and i appreciate the offer very much. | ||

Chicago isn't that bad to drive in! I do it all the time. Just take the tollway and try not to travel through at the busy rush hour times. | ||

newbie isn't here yet. will be at the end of next month and wife doesn't want to be the long distance grandparent at this time. i'll be sticking around here for a while rightnow until a job pops up to go out of town then i'm outta here again. right now, i'm really looking at the toll road to keep her out of the main stream traffic. |
