The story below is about the older brother of one of my Son classmates. My son and I just shared a good cry together. Standing up and doing the right thing just doesn't seem worth it anymore. Another family friend we have to attend a funeral for. I can't take much more.

Sprink, man, I am so sorry. I don't know what to say.

What a waste of a quality life at the hands of a waste of skin.

I truly appreciate the kind words. I know sometimes I don't see eye to eye with everyone here, but it's all just internet stupidity. I hope and pray NONE of us have to deal with issues like this.

What always gets to me are the cowards who witness these horrors and don't come forward! Complicity both in murder and lack of humanity. If man's justice not be done then providence take them all. Sprink, my thoughts are with you and that poor man's family. I come to grief anytime I hear of a senseless loss of life, I come to tears anytime I see a parent have to outlive their children.

Rocco,

That was one of Andrea's (my wife) close friends Son. Her name is Danielle we call her Danny. Andrea and Danny have worked together for 15 or so years now. Colin was a good kid. Andrea said its very quiet at work and everyone just can't believe this happened to Colin.

Spink, I'm saddened for your loss & everyone's else that was a part of this man's life.

May his action serve as a reminder of what is good in this world.

"Colin did the right thing. I’m proud of him. He wasn’t a big guy, but he had a big personality and a big heart.”"

Something I wish & hope we all aspire towards daily.

Any parent would be proud to have a son like that.

Standing up and doing the right thing is always worth it. He sounds like a young man who understood that. The world needs more people like Colin Byars.

What a tragic and senseless loss.

I disagree.
He did what was right and it killed him. I can only hope that if the situation presents itself to me, I do the same thing.
May God rest his soul.

Prayers sent.

Words were exchanged. It would of been best to ignore and get in you car and leave. Me being in the bar business and seeing how quickly things can go sour. Reasoning with people drinking is sometimes not the best thing.

I believe there needed to be 5 or 10 or 15 Colin Byars willing to do the right thing.

Instead, it was one on too many.

We've had more than a few discussions about barfights or other social situations where one or the other or BOTH parties don't back down from an obvious confrontation after some petty insult.

We've read here on BADWEB how different people are so willing and ready to start fighting for some "honor" or because they need to "right some wrong."

Righting a wrong - whether imagined or real - might be a very noble gesture but LOOK at what the outcome might be!

Tragedies like these are far too common and yet we ALL read of people who openly advocate not backing down in the face of an impending fight.

This is certainly a tragedy for the friends and family - and the WORSE tragedy in all this is that it WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!

We will continue having these conversations because WE ACCEPT THESE BEHAVIORS - both in social situations AND in our riding. We haven't yet started the killing season in riding (but it IS getting warmer)... we WILL have a thread or two in the coming months about somebody getting in over their head - in much the same way as somebody can get in over their head in a social situation... and collides with "oncoming traffic" - figuratively in the above case.

Face it, NICE people die - and for all the "right reasons." Predictable and yet A TOTAL WASTE...

Tragic in many ways.

Jeremy to bad you feel that way. While you might feel that way.... and understand what your saying but. Booze sometimes doesn't mix well. Cat whistles and rude comments were what happened. When your drinking those comments can be taken to heart alot more for some individual's and the end result is a bad fight, someone injured severely or worse. If those comments were ignored maybe just maybe my wifes long time friend and coworker of years,Son would be alive today. My wife was on Face book last night with Danny. Its something I could never imagine to go through.

Cat calls should have been ignored.

Agree completely.

Behavior beyond cat calls should be defended. If a drunk guy or drunk guys are touching, groping, and invading the space of another, I would probably step in and would expect others to step in and defend.

Now a liquor induced bar fight with a sucker punch ending in fatal brain injury, yep that is futile and a waste.

I'm about the most laid back guy you will ever meet in person. In spite of my online persona, you could meet me and never know it. I find that humor and respect carry a lot of weight in altering behavior.

When that fails, one must decide how far to go to correct the issue and the magnitude of the issue vs. the risks associated with correcting it.

In this case, a good kid may have escalated a small scale problem into one that resulted in an asymetrical result.

Stepping up comes with the potential for the ultimate sacrifice.

That is life. Unfortunately.

My problem is that people should neither fight to "teach somebody a lesson" nor fight to right some imagined wrong.

IF you are willing to fight, you should be willing to eat the liver of your opponent. NOBODY is going to "learn their lesson" by having their face slapped or being hit by a 2x4.
