While I can see 1 OWI, this is riduculous.

"I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me," Phelps said. "For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again."

His PR guy wrote that shit for him LOL.

Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but I'm the same age as him... if that hadn't went public... he wouldn't feel one ounce of remorse... just my .02 guys

And why should he feel remorse, anyway? The guy racked up 8 golds. His only job is swimming fast, and he obviously excels at that. I think it would have been much better (at least more amusing) if he'd just walked up to the podium Mark Spitz-style with all his medals draped across his chest and said "the first one of you out there to get NINE of these can step up and tell me how to live my life."

On the other hand, it was damned stupid of him to be doing something like this around people with cameras who might be inclined to cash in on embarrassing pics of him. Lesson learned.

"His only job is swimming fast"

Tell that to his marketing firm, a million kids looking up to him and the Team USA anti-doping/drug abuse committee he's a member of.

If you're gonna live like Ricky Williams, man up to it, don't be a hypocrite.

Who give a shit?

I have smoked dope with cops, lawyers, doctors, pharmacists etc...

Honestly I would rather burn one than drink a beer, and until lately I would have.

And nobody should care who else does either.

Again, the above mentioned are pretty special people,

and really parents should be kids role models not athletes.

Precisely. It's going to hurt him in the pocketbook because he's Michael Phelps, but if he was just random dude X nobody would think twice about it. Sucks for him, but it sounds like maybe we are the ones with the problem.

"Nobody gives a shit about the average guy token up."

They sure did when they arrested my little brother! Then again, they were already mad because when they found him, his RX7 was buried in the mud under the Mason Street Bridge about 4 blocks from the Green Bay City Police Station.

Phelps has a long way to go before he matches that....

I hope this deal doesn't hurt Phelps too much. It sucks because he is just an average kid doing the exact same things we did at that age; he just has a spotlight on him none of us had to deal with.

Bill

"And nobody should care who else does either."

When you're on an anti-doping anti-drug committee, people should care when you get caught.

"and really parents should be kids role models not athletes."

Not every parent wins 8 gold medals in the Olympics. I didn't see 1 "heibler" jersey or swim cap at my step-daughter's swim meet in January. I did see a ton of "Phelps" though. Winning those medals had consequences, one of which is knowing damn well that kids are going to emulate you. Live up to a clean image or stay the at home and watch the Olympics with your college buddy's while lighting up the glass dick.

I hope all of you condemning Phelps never pics up a cigarette, beer, wine, or aspirin for that matter.

A drug is a drug is a drug no matter what it is or if is is legal or not.

Just because the loser politicians say it is wrong does not make is so.

Remember right and wrong are ideas created by humans...to CONTROL humans

I don't think anyone is condemning him, I know I am certainly not and quite frankly, let's be honest, he's a swimmer . . . I could care less what he does.

And I think politicians have zero to do with it.

My statement was that the stupid childish mistake (I could care less about the drugs, it was the stupidity I'm talking about) will simply cost him tens of millions of dollars. . . as I said, simple economics, he's just worth a lot less for endorsements which is where those folks make the bulk of their money.

He'll get along fine.

IMHO, Phelps smoking the cheeba is no big deal..
However, if you are going to stand up and tell kids "Don't Do Drugs", as he has.. well, be a bit more discrete with your cheeba.
He now comes off as a hypocrite to some.

But then again, you can look at it from another view:
Everyone (that is, those who are against personal drug use) says that smoking dope makes you a looser... and that you can never achieve great things if you smoke dope... O'RLY???
Here we have a MULTIPLE Gold winning Olympic Athelete, who just so happens to also enjoy smoking weed.
I know, it's only one guy right? Well, is it? Hmmm.. maybe there are more...

Kobe Bryant bent some poor hotel staff member over a bed, went to court for rape, and settled out of court.

Should've ruined his endorsement career forever, right?

Still pitching for Nike.

Still pitching for Gatorade.

This will blow over. Marketers will pull the plug publicly and then speak privately with the PR manager to tell them when the next marketing push will come.

This won't hurt him in the long run.

Thing is this FT...Kobe is still playing and was never found GUILTY for what happened. And he had smart lawyers who discredited the accuser.

Phelps time is over. Sure he may swim in the next Oly, but his performance won't be repeated. And its a 4 year wait until he swims. Kobe played right away, allowing people to focus on his performance, not his wrong doing. What's the last thing you remember about Phelps.....a pic of him doing the bong.

There's already talk of his endorsements going bye bye.

Yeah, and OJ was found innocent in court.

Is there any doubt that SOMETHING went down in Kobe's hotel room? All you have to do is look at the baseball diamond he bought his wife to know.

Phelps is still a likeable guy. In four years, no one will remember.

Do you remember this guy?

No? Maybe this will help:

Hint: He was the only American cheering on 9/11.

Americans have the attention span of a goldfish. In four years, when Phelps is strapping on another set of gold medals, no one will care.

A friend of mine said this, "Why do you think they call it dope?
My nickname used to be SpaceMan. Been clean 15 years. He needs to keep his recreation on the QT if he is going to be an actor. Either play or act, don't play act. Hey who said it was weed? I liked bongin' Qualudes. And I still don't think it was wrong."

I don't care now.

For some reason, it doesn't surprise me at all. After the Olympics, I remember saying to my wife, "wonder how long til he's in trouble..." I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt because he seemed like he had his head on straight. There are worse things I guess!
