What do you mean by "best use"?

I had an 01 Passat with Tiptronic.

Same system used by Audi and Porsche.

The best way to use is to just leave it drive.

I have to drive a tiptronic gearbox that reacted as fast as I wanted it to to make it any fun. They have so much shift lag from the time you push the shifter, it's more annoying than anything else.

There is a "transmission mod" that can be done that increases the shifter response.

My understanding is that there are hard shifts and "mid shifts" controlled by progressive vanes in the system.

The chip closes the vanes faster. It makes the shift points "firmer" but decreases the manual mode lag.

this website is like the badweb of newer VWs, this is where I get all my info for my Rabbit.

You should be able to find all your answers there!

Put it in drive. If you want to "manual" shift, pop it into the "+ -" slot & push/pull to shift. If it's loud, shift up, if it's quiet, down shift. When you get bored, put it back in drive.

I just got called yesterday that the '09 Jetta Wagon TDI I ordered in Feb. '08 arrived! It has the DSG dual clutch trans. Too bad I can't afford it anymore. Anyone want a Diesel?

The Tiptronic is pretty straight-forward: Put it in drive and let it shift like any other automatic. Or push the lever to the right and you've got an idiot-proof (it'll upshift/downshift to prevent overrev or bogging) sequential gearbox without a clutch.

We bought our '09 Jetta TDI sedan back in August with the DSG. This replaced an '03 Passat W8 with Tiptronic.

The DSG is so much better than the Tiptronic. I agree with others that the Tiptronic is a little lazy with the shifts. My biggest gripe was the lazy downshifts. I almost always shifted the Tiptronic manually.

Different story with the DSG. Put the DSG in drive and it's almost like a CVT - the shifts are incredibly quick. Put it in sport mode and it'll do some serious burnouts. The DSG in sport mode actually shifts like I do with the 5-speed in our '04 TDI Wagon. I very seldom manually shift the DSG - it's that good.

Oh, and the power difference between the old PD motor and the new CRD is very noticable (~40hp).
