I've seen a couple of photos of custom sporties with aclutch cover that appears to have holes drilled around the outer edge (I say appeared, cuz I can't imagine anyone signing up to run a total loss lub system in their gearbox) . . . I've not been able to find any in the catalogs I've looked at . . . . anyone know where to find such a treasure? thanks |

I had to make my own when I converted to belt drive on my 86" bagger. |

Bomber, It would be possible to do. The seal is actually inboard of the bolts holding the cover on. It would look cool but remember that the primary cover usually isn't powder coated that far it. You would see unfinished aluminum through the holes. I have seen some Big Twin derby covers that looked drilled but it was actually a cover over the cover. derby cover

If you are talking about the racer in the classified section, that is a WAY expensive thing to do. It takes a big HD belt drive conversion with a dry clutch and custom fabbed pieces to make it all fit. BIG BUCKS, minimal return for us mortals. Looks really cool though. It's supriseing nobody makes a belt drive kit for sportsters. It would make for quicker rev's I think? edited by sportsman on December 31, 2003 |

There is a dryclutch conversion available. I think it was available from Barnett but don't quote me on that and I am being too lazy to double check, but that also gives you that Drilled Derby Cover since it needs the airflow for cooling the plates. |

How would you add trans oil? On sporties & buells the trans & primary share fluid. I dont think there is even any place othe than the primary to put in fluid for the trans. Plus you have to plug the line yet still allow it to breathe. Not worth the hassle, plus dry clutches sound like shit...at least I think so. |

Anyone seen the new billet inspection covers from Iron Machine? They look very good! http://www.ironmachine.com/images/XBRSPCCC.jpg |

Dat es vay cool, I wonder how much it is, how you'd get one, and why nobody's doing it here. With people lightening cranks and stuff like that, the front sprocket out of billet aluminum and belts would seem a lot more efficient. Blake, you're the engineer, thoughts? |

all . . . .thanks for the data . . .. I think what I've seen is a cover within the stock cover . . . everything else looked stock . . . . as for efficiency of belt vs chain primary drive, they are likely close to being a wash . . . that german set-up is pretty nice looking, but a little more complex-appearing than I like (simple is good)! I'll post if I find what I'm looking for |
