Is Jan a bad time to ride the Suches loop? Im considering hauling down for a weekend ride with a couple of friends. Im guessin temps in the mid 40s for northern Georgia. That doesnt seen too bad but if the salt or sand the corners it doesnt seem worth it. |

Till some of those North Ga yahoo's speak up, I'll venture it would be awfully risky to haul that far. If you hit a good weekend, your luck is way better that mine. I'd try to hold off till March! Rotzaruck! |

Snow generally falls every year, although not always in large amounts. The Storm of the Century (1993) brought 18 inches to the area with drifts measured in feet. The coldest temperature recorded in Blairsville was -16F(-27C) in 1985, and the warmest temperature ever recorded was 100F(38C) in 1934 and 1936.

Yeah smarty, but try 18" in the hills with only salt/sand and no snow plows. Mostly we get freezing rain. We love pulling Yankies out of the ditches because they "know how to drive in snow". |

Is Jan a bad time to ride the Suches loop? Maybe, maybe not... It can be really cold at night, and get real nice in the afternoon. Ride time would be short, once the sun goes down it gets cold fast. |

Do the roads stay fairly clear of salt and sand? |

If it's been snowing or icy, no. The picture above is where we turned around and went back down. That's Richard Russell by the way. Wolf Pen Gap would probably be the worst since it's less traveled. Real confidence builder! But since snow and ice aren't a regularity sand isn't usually a big deal. It's really a toss up. Riding HWY60 usually isn't a problem. |

IMO our weather changes a lot in the winter. I took the first week of Jan. off last year and rode every day , but it was luck . It is not uncommon to have highs in the 60s one day, with ice, sleet the next day. watch the forecast and go for it. Rick |

That's Richard Russell by the way. Relative of Richard Russel, Jr., the late U.S. senator from Georgia? |

One of the best roads around Suches. It has a really great rhythm to it. |

So, it may not be a world class place like Suches(Mr Barker just rode right on by,another couple of hours, on his way up there), but, if you did hit the wrong weekend....... To avoid a total loss you can come back this way a few miles and loose a little elevation, maybe we can find you SOME kind of crooked roads SOMEWHERE!

I low sided my RT on 60,in a blind right hand turn, this past January. The cause was fine white gravel they put down for icy conditions. Two thousand in damage. And bruised ribs. |
