Lots of layoffs at work today. I didn't think our group was going to be hit too hard, so I wasn't getting nervous much from all the rumors of the past months. However, our officer for our group was let go a few months back and left us with no one to defend the group during these decisions. As a result, our group got hit the hardest from all accounts. In addition to handfulls of other folks, the three level of managers directly over me have been elimated. Thankfully, I've been confirmed safe along with the rest of my team... at leasy for now. Rumors are that there will be another wave in March. The mood is gloomy in office today, but at least I still have a job and don't have to worry about the repo man taking the bike or the car. Hopefully the reorged company will be a better place to work than it was the past - I wasn't particularly happy here. |

My company let 250 management persons go earlier this month and plan to cut 180 pilots later this month. Times are changing. I hate to see people lose there jobs. I hope things go well for you. Hang in there Dude........ |

We're sweating lay offs at my company also. We're a small company wholly owned by a big company. Rumors are that they want to absorb our IT functions into the corporate IT department about 800 miles away. No transfers. |

I feel for you guys in the cooperate world that management can pick and choose who's gonna get the ax. Every time time a suit walks up to your desk in times like this your heart has got to sink. I'm a union truck driver, where seniority rules. If they want to lay off 5 drivers, we all know who it's gonna be, the last 5 guys that were hired and are at the bottom of the seniority list. The other little catch is before they can lay off any full time drivers, they can't have any part time workers, and our dock is all part timers. |

Been here 20 years. One of the highest paid due to length of service. Those are the ones are disappearing in this industry (not so much where I work) because they'd rather save money than keep the knowledge. |

Heavy days. I got retrenched in the 1987 aftermath. If there is a bright side, it forced me to do something for myself workwise. That's gone OK since. |

Yeah, I work for one of the 3 biggest flooring companies in the world. Needless to say, our business started drying up at the beginning of the housing fallout. I've totally lost count of the layoffs and plant closings. Luckily I'm on the product development team, which has always been a skeleton crew, and they need us if they want ANY new products for the next year. Still, it's a little unnerving. ~SM |

I know how the feeling. Hated to work in a place where I had little to no control of my destiny. So I did (3 years ago) like Dave did. Went solo. Worries are worries, the only difference is when you are independent you have a chance to mitigate the worries by your own actions. Nevertheless, life is not a walk in the park for any of us. |

+1 for Union jobs. Even though i hate Unions, its good for keeping your job because just like Badlionsfan said, goes by seniority! I also hate Wars, but thats also whats keeping us busy as we build Humvee's for our Military. I got lucky 4 yrs ago when getting this job because i was in the RV industry. In my area(Northen Indiana) we have, if not the biggest RV Industy close to it, in the United States. Every plant is laying off or closing up all together, inculding the last 4 jobs i had before this one. So i feel for anyone going through this time and i know it could have been me! |

Quit before they can lay you off. I did. It took me a whole week to find a more suitable environment.I'm back in a large company again after leaving that "penny ante" small shop where everyone kisses a$$ to maintain their job.Not worth it.I won't work for a shi**y company ever again. I got a FEW MORE $$$/hour too! |

I hear the military is hiring. I try to stay out of political discussions so I will keep this as simple as me. Buy American. The same people who are losing their jobs are the ones filing out of Wallmart all day long with their "great deals". No I don't think this is a blanket statement covering all who lose their jobs, just something I think is happening but have done no studies to prove. That was my disclaimer folks. |

Duc - I'm already working for a very large, very old company. Layoffs are about the only way they can get rid of me - not many people get fired unless they're really lacking. My problem is I'm a little overpaid, and I know that I won't find the same salary somewhere else as I'm making now. I'm starting to look around (again), but I'll ride this out for now. I don't think that, if forced, I could find work in a week around here. The job market is pretty dried up from what I can tell. The good news is they're offering pretty good packages to those who are getting the axe - They are asking these folks to work through the rest of the month, then they will recieve full pay and benefits through the end of the year. At that point, they get their severence check which is a weeks pay for each year of service. (Message edited by xl1200r on October 23, 2008) |

AMEN my friend AMEN! I have said the exact thing myself. To the letter! I feel for you guys in the cooperate world that management can pick and choose who's gonna get the ax. Very unpopular on this forum, but, I know when the axe is coming and how far away it is. No amount of ass kissing will save the guys below me. I go to work and do my job to the best of my ability until I get bumped. We just send the Union, "Thugs," out when things don't go our way (that's for you Blake.....you know what statements you've made that I'm refering to.) |

Just hope things dont go the way of Consolidated Freight. Come to work one day and the gates are locked. In these times in the freight business, anything is possible. A small union company (Alvan Motor Freight) and a larger non union carrier (Jevic Transportation) have gone under this year. I guess the positive thing is that the owner of our company has gone to the auctions of these two companies and purchased their better equipment (tractors, trailers, forklifts, Etc). We're still doing pretty good, everyone works most days, and have actually hired several drivers this year. As far as knowing where the ax is, unless they close my terminal, I'll have a job. I'm the senior driver, as I was the first person they hired when they opened in Cleveland. When we opened I was 27 years old and the senior guy. Really ticked off the other guys who were all at least 10 years older than me when they realized that they'd never make it to the top unless I leave. |

"Consolidated Freightways" went out of business in a most evil way. That little non-union upstart called "Con-Way" (offshoot) was the recipient little by little of all of the "Consolidated Freightways" business.Until "Con-Way" sucked the life out of "Consolidated Freightways" and IT went belly up. Good way to Union bust ha? Next up to go is Yellow freight. XL1200r: I guess it's best for you to wait it out.I once thought i'd not match the pay i had. I did....With a little looking around,a job is easy to find. Heck...if MILLIONS of illegal immigrants can come here and get work,i CERTAINLY can. I've lost my fear of finding work, and am a dangerous laborer for it. |

Ya know I prefer to buy American too but it is getting increasingly Harder Isnt that the truth...doesnt stop me from trying though. A couple of weeks ago, I needed some new socks for work. While I was at Target, looking through the socks, I came across a brand that I had never heard of before. Looking at the package, it said "Made in USA". Caught me completely off guard...I bought 2 packages. |

Next up to go is Yellow freight. Doubt it. Yellow will kill off the other companies it owns first. they've already begun enveloping Roadway into Yellow. Next They'll kill off Holland, New Penn and Reddaway. Jevic Never recovered from being sucked dry when owned by Yellow, and neither did Preston. |

My brother hates working at Yellow. After already working a full day they can require him (with no notice) to continue up to 14 hour days. He,and my father drove for Consolidated.Smiths transport before that. One by one,the once famous trucking firms are going belly up.I don't think the Teamsters is helping much.Their bennies are ridiculously lavish. Anyone remember Akers? Merit? Carolina? |

Ha! Well, after stating above that I felt relatively safe in my position, I was accused of "disrespect" and "insubordination" this morning. One more "screw up" and I'm gone. Gotta' love a boss that expects you to read minds, can't remember what they actually told you to do, and can't stand to be corrected. Oh well.... guess I should go ahead and prepare for unemployment since I'm not a psychic and will undoubtedly make another mistake. ~SM |

The only good thing about these layoffs is I no longer have to deal with my old manager, who was all those things and then some. We're being told that in addition to the positions they're elimating, they are doing a major restructuring of the entire company and there will be many posted positions to apply for. If I can play my cards right, I may be able to work this into a promotion by making a move to another group. |
