OK. I was looking at a brochure for a travel to the Antarctic an they mentioned a ride between the souther tip of South America an The Antarctic.
NOW. I was wondering if there is a map quest type site or website in general out there that will give me miles, roads, time, etc. from my door to the Southern most point in South America? I have found the city it is in Argentina and is called Ushuaia.
Maybe in a Few years do a month long BRAG ride down there LOL.
Thanks,
Spidey

Hey Spidey,

You'd need an urban assault bike like the KLR650 or DR650 to handle that kind of terrain. When I had mine there was places I could go you would have trouble getting a chopper into.

Count me in!!!!We can find the roads as we need them.

Ushuaia eh??? There's a religion by that name... How would you get from South America to Antarctica? I don't think it freezes over or anything.

Maybe I'm confused.

Spidey,
Get a hold of Jim_Witt, He seems to have a broad knowledge of mapping software and can probably point you in the right direction.

I am not going to the Antarctica - we would have better luck going to the North Pole!!!!

But to go to the tip of South America would be cool.

I'd say the belts would freeze and just snap easier than they normally do - but then again I am running a chain these days.

The trip down to south america, would be kinda expensive, while there have been a few to do it, mainly from Cali, there are some things to consider(the reason i know this is due to my parents haveing a home in Chile, and trying to figure a way to get a car down) First off, once you get into Colombia, all bets are off, and if you look at decent maps, the pan american highway kinda ends in that region, plus, there is a problem with the civil war going on down there, Americans generally hold a higher ransom than locals, The roads in general once you get past that point are outstanding, and have inproved to the point that there is a highway the entire length of Chile that rivals anythig here, what we had thought of doing was riding/driving down to Panama(and belive it or not i have places along the way we can stay once we have arrive in mexico, costa rica and Guatamal), anyway, ship the bikes via cargo from panama to peru, and skip the iffy parts, i have a freind in guatamala who actually mentioned he could set up the cargo ship and passage, so its a matter of getting the time off and setting dates, not really sure about the rest of the way to the town you mentioned, but if there is no highway, then there is a boat, our investigation was based on Punto Arenas in chile, but i am sure it can be accomidated to suit you needs, the flight to antartica is going to be the most expensive part, i would think that that is the mst costly part of the journey, but let me know if you decide to go, doubt i would take the Buell, since the dealer network is no longer avaliable in Chile, but some overland, mid weight bike(prefer honds due to there presence in south america) I was thinking of shipping my Buell down, so i could have a bike to ride while visiting, but maybe i could drie it down instead, i think it would take less than a month, but it depended on how much sight seeing you wanted to do
Just as a side note, last time i was down i mgot a chance to meet a German couple, they had flow there DRZ400's from germany, and had the month off to tool around chile/Brazil and argintena and seemed to be having a great time, i also got a chance to meet a couple from Brazil who had riden over from San Pablo to the Chilean Andes, thy were having a ball, but decided to slow down once they got off the main road due to gravel, they didnt get a chance to go to the top of the mountain(its like shale, really loose, was tuff on the car)
Just some things to think about, not a bad trip, but parts for a buell would be hard, would have to have someone back here who could express the parts if you neede them and take spares just in case, the only dealer in Chile closed 2 years ago

Oh yea, one last thing, its summer down there when its winter hear, and the spring is our fall, which means timming would be very important, not so much getting down, but getting back, plus there spring can consist of rain every other day, i think thats why people do it from cali, easier on the down and back deal
again just things to think about

You will probably have to change the compression of your bike to use something between 60-80 octane, and you should carry some cheesecloth to strain the gas through. Also, make your muffler as quiet as possible.

There was a guy down in Brazil or someplace who used to post on the site here who would be a good source of information. Also, believe it or not, check with several bicycle sites via a web search for trip reports as I've read several in the past from people who have pedaled to the southern regions.

And be aware, some regions still use the old string/wire across the street to knock bicyclists and motorcyclists off their bikes to steal their stuff.

One of the professors at the university spends the summers down in Peru and has told a few tales.

Lots of different stuff down there, and it's always in a state of change. Carry a cheap camera and mail the film home as you go.

You might get some tips from these folks:

Wow...Does that look like fun!

Check with Whitehorse Press for books on the subject. Would suggest the KLR650 for cost, size, comfort, carrying capacity, range and reliability. Great aftermarket support for adventure touring as well. Had one and really miss it. It did everything well.

The Honda and Suzuki dual purpose models are great but better suited for short range offroad riding and pale in comparison for long distance adventure touring.

sounds like a heap of fun, but that is NOT Buell country. unless you have a truck folowing you with clean 90 octane fuel, and the 3 or 4 spare tires, and maybe a belt or two that you will need. you may need something with a little more ground clearance, more fuel capacity, chain drive is also a plus for gravel roads, and durability in general. also i would be pretty scared to be that far from home with an electronic fuel injection system. for out in the boonies i think a gravity fed fuel system is the way to go. my nickels worth, dean

Lemme know Spidee. I lived in Brasil for a couple years and would love the adventure. There are some Harley shops there that could supply Buell parts. Everything else we need we just keep a direct uplink to ModestoBuell.

When you got a few hours to burn, you should check out www.strikingviking.net. It is from this guy who has done some cool motorcycle adventures. Find the journal for his 2001 trip in South America, where he was kidnapped in Columbia. His stories are very inspiring and will make you want to take that trip even more.
