called up my dealer and spoke to the mechanic doing my esstimate. he told me that he wasnt finished with it yet but in parts alone w/out adding on labor cost's he has added up 6,400$ i bought the bike for 7,999. looks like they will probally total it. it doesnt look like too much damage and i want to buy it back from insurance under salvaged title. but my question is. when i buy it back i dont plan on replaceing the frame just buying frame covers to hide the dent/scratches. but is this safe? if you look in my pic you can see the dent right on the frame/tank. do any of you have dented frames? is it safe? you think i should buy it back and fix it myself? here is pic thanks reuben http://members.tccoa.com/rjpeters/wreck/MVC-831F.jpg |

You know it could be the angle the photo was taken but that front end looks like its twisted!!! My advice is not to buy the bike with a salvaged title and let it go - Depreciation should not be that bad seeing its practically new!!!! Replace the bike and move on! |

the left handle bar is bent but thats it, i think its the angle of photo. ill see if i can get some more info but i really think the bike is fine other then dented frame. |

Quite a few XBs running around with dents in the frame, mine being one of them. As long as it didn't tweak the frame out of alignment it's just cosmetic.

Concur with Newfie, unless you are looking for a long term hobby. How's the hand? Just sent you an email as I hadn't seen you post in a while. Guess you just answered my question about the bike. |

dont know if this helps, but i wrapped a sportster around a ford escort( sideways) bent up frame, imploded oil tank. new HD frame was only U$750, oil tank, handlebars, footpegs, mirrors, weld up cracked crankcases, etc, repair was less than U$2000, including new rubber. of course new frame, so new title, same model year. |

I wouldnt bother, you will probably get a salvage title, the bike will either be impossible to title & insure or at least be a real pain to have done. What does your insurance company say the salvage price for you is? |

not sure about the salvaged title, dyna. you do bring up a good question though, i will have to check that out. Is insurance on salvaged title usually more then a brand new bike? The main reason i would like to buy it back is because if they do total it out and i have to go finance a new bike, i really doubt my step-dad would be keen on buying another. He did'nt want me to get the first one and now that i have had an accident it proved his point that it wont be my fault but some idiot cage/bicyclist on the road. I really love the bike and love to ride, also when repairing the bike i can learn a-lot about it. fullpower did you get a salvaged title? if so how was insurance on it. thanks for the help reuben |

Why would you have to finance another, Just take the payout and get another, chances the payment will be made to you and your finance company. Insurance should pay for the "Actual Cash Value" of the bike. For those not familiar with that term "Actual Cash Value = List Price New - Depreciation" and from what I remember you only had about 500 miles on it so depreciation should be low. I am sure one of the retailers that frequent this board can help with a replacement. As for repairing the bike - trust me (just put my claims adjusters hat on) when a bike or any other vehicle is wrote off chances are its not worth fixing. Yours could be a case of a constructive total loss where the cost of the salvage added to the damages will be more than one of like kind and quality of another is worth, therefore deemed a "Constructive Total Loss" Some losses like that are actually repairable but I would not risk it. I would not want to be leaned into a nice sharp sweeper at high speed when something finally lets go. You got to realize that frame and other components were put under all kinds of stress that they are not normally used to and over time there could be metal fatigue that has occurred that is not present with the naked eye. Be Safe - I would not want to see you get the bike back on the road and after landing the first wheelie hard the front end decide to let go!!!! I may be being hard but just my thoughts!!!!! |

Hmmm, I would get the replacement, save my money to get the salvage bike, use the new one as a template to measure EVERYTHING and look over EVERYTHING with a FINE tooth comb and then go race the salvage bike if it ALL checked out. If it didn't, I would have a parts bike. |
