Im posting this not as a BASH to Buell, but as EDUCATION to some new Buell owners.I have read on a few other post on here about different modifications,exhaust,ecm..ect.And guys thinking they can change from stock set-up,modify their bikes and still have a Buell Warrant.....THINK AGAIN. This is taken directly out of the Buell Owners Manual:EXCLUSIONS,This warranty will not apply to any motorcycle as follows: 1.Which has had ANY high performance accessories,or components installed or supplied by the DEALER or ANY other person and which alter the manufacturers ORIGINAL equipment specifications, and ANY damage caused by the use of these accessories or components. If guys on here want Buell to honor their warranties keep everything stock! You may indeed alter your bike from stock, have something break, and Buell MAY warranty it,but they dont have to!As far as Im concerned Buell makes a great bike, and they made a great bike BEFORE the XB's!I think anything can be broke if given enough punishment or abuse. When I tweaked on my 2000 Cyclone,I knew my warranty was no longer going to apply, but that wasnt a concern! These motor IMHO,a solid motors!Im all for tweaking our Buells to run and sound better,Im just saying that if you do this and it breaks, dont be surprised if Buell doesnt want to stand behind their warranty.Every bike manufacturer has genericly the same wording, they have to.As I stated in the begining im a BUELLAHOLIC,Im just maybe trying to share info on what the Owners Manual says.

Hey Richieg150, Here is a little story I will relate to you. Several years ago I bought a new Chevy pickup. I drove it home and promptly installed a turbocharger on it. At 20k miles one of the wrist pins failed. I took it to my dealer. They ofcourse said that GM would not warranty it. After my lawyer talked to the zone manager, they replaced the entire engine with a new one. I had to pay an agreed $100 dollars to cover the r/r of the turbo. Why did I have them by the balls? Because the turbo did not contribute towards the failure and I could prove it. Just something to think about. |

Ok you put on a Turbo wich would put Stress on the Crank an pins an rods. Now I am not sayin Boo for you gettin a new engine But To say that the Turbo didn't contribute to the failure is like me sayin Burnouts didn't contribute to my loss of tread life. But Cool digs on you gettin a new motor. |

Burnouts... Tire life... They are related? FYI if you do enough 700+ft stoppies like Craig Jones your front tire wear will match your burnout tire in the back. So remember to balance your Hooligan acts. |

Richie, Read again, more closely. The warranty exclusion clause you listed...
quote:This warranty will not apply to any motorcycle as follows: 1.Which has had any high performance accessories, or components installed or supplied by the DEALER or ANY other person and which alter the manufacturers ORIGINAL equipment specifications, and ANY damage caused by the use of these accessories or components.
is not as onerous as you think. The "and"s that I emphasized via large bold red font mean in legal terms that all three conditions must be met to cause a warranty exclusion. You would need to have high performance accessories that alter the OEM specs AND the damage for which you seek warranty coverage would have to be caused by said high performance accessories. The Buell warranty is no different in this respect than any other vehicle warranty. So relax and just ride. Everything is well and good in Buell warranty land.

Objectively, there is no reason in the world why any manufacturer of anything should warrant their product if modified/altered in any manner. Quite simply, the product is no longer as they designed and tested it for performance, reliability and safety. Additionally, why should they be responsible for products manufactured by or services rendered by non-authorized/trained others. I know, saddles, handlebars, fenders, and other cosmetic items should be excluded from this in reference to mechanical failures, but even these modifications can change the harmonics which could result in handling or other problems that the manufacturer should not be responsible for. Easiest way to relate to it is that if you want to modify a finished product, you are now the manufacturer of a new product even if you outsource both materials and labor. Subjectively, in the event a manufacturer does knowingly provide warranty service on a modified product it is at their discretion and may or may not set a precedent for any other similar claims. Not being an attorney specializing in matters such as these, I am not aware of the legal implications of concerning such practice. However, I strongly recommend not altering/modifying any product unless you wish to take full responsibility for it.

Sounds like the same thing ya regurgitated from another thread Nevco. Swap out mirrors and a 12 month warranty is void when ya bring it in because the fuel injection system is amiss. My experiences with Buell proves your application as applied to reality pure manure. People...don't put this in your mouth. This has been brought to you by the word "reality". DAve |

It looks like Nevco1 does not need a warranty. In his profile: Note: Never had a problem with the bike as I replaced all failure prone parts at my cost as part of preventative maintenance program. Very nice of you to do that. I too have engaged in such activity. The only thing that I had to warranty besides the recalls was the rear PM wheel which failed. Looking back, I think that racetec valve and springs I put in the front end may have had something to do with the PM wheel failure. Buell was nice enough to replace it anyway. I paid for the stator failure. I had installed a plasma bulb a couple of years before and that may have burnt out the stator. Ya reckon? Not! stir, stir, stir. |

Yep, I did regurgitate that from another thread. You guys nailed me on it once before and is the reason why I added saddle, etc. Manure, caca, pure poop...I wish. Forget bikes for a moment and relate it to a UL Listed product. Wouldn't stand a chance in court unless the jury was really sympathetic to your loss of life cause you souped up the coffee maker. Glad you checked my profile. Yep, I pay cash for my toys and buy them used with low miles and in excellent condition. Let someone else take the depreciation hit and work out the initial bugs via warranty. I got the 2000 X1 with two years and 500 miles on it. Was for sale as original owner was crippled in an industrial accident shortly after buying it, could no longer ride and seeing it in the garage was mental anguish. My 2003 FXDWG was five months old when I bought it and had 2,441 miles on it. Bought it from a friend that is an engineer at HD. He gets a new one every spring and sells it every fall. Was simply my turn to get lucky. The mods and upgrades I did to the X1 were a result of both the Knowledge Vault on the BWB and the X1 Files. Armed with that info, I quizzed the local Buellers, Dealers and Independents to make my final decisions. Am really pleased with the results and all but the Jazz can were professionally (read: dealer) installed. For some reason, I figured that even I couldn't screw up the Jazz can install given all the info in the Knowledge Vault. LOL So (like the little old lady in the Wendy's commercials said) Where's the Beef???

Whoops...One last thing. I did not replace the oil pump drive gear yet. Had it inspected with the 10.0K service and it was like new. However, it looks like I will be adding a Zipper's oil pump and an S&S drive gear when it shows some wear. Figure once in there, the pump is a free install and will only cost me for the part. Any suggestions other than the parts I selected? |

Never had any issues with my mods voiding warranty work. It's all due to having a good, friendly relationship with my dealer. If your local H-D/Buell dealer is a butt-head, look around for an independant shop that is registered to do warranty work. They'll love to help you out!
