Yup. Gotta call the DMV to report a lost or stolen plate. There will be a fee for a replacement plate. |

I had to go to police fill out a sheet, then go back to DMV to get them to issue a new one. Also if you are like me and had a custom plate, you cannot get it again for something like 2 years. And yes I in NY |

Hammer, that's not the correct form. See: http://www.dmv.org/ny-new-york/license-plate-faqs. php |

Had the same thing happen to my son, Carparts! Notice the two small tabs remaining on the license bracket. Need to bolt all corners down on the new plate when you get it, or it will happen again! |

trackdad, I did have the other ones there, once upon a time the license plate is not part of my normal maintenance, maybe now. So here's the scoop Go home, call 911 (if you bother to go to the local office, they'll just call 911 there) Wait for sheriff, they will give up a MV78B. The form is an unusual size, like the receipt you get when you pay a ticket... Anyways it's not a form you can find or print. Next bring that, your registration, your license and $10.50 to the DMV. They'll give a form for a new plate to fill out. Wait you DMV "turn time" and you're all set. If you get the new plate form ahead of time you could save a couple minutes. I'm going to put some rubber washers under the plate this time around. |

According to the above link, the fee is now $18. When I lost my plate, I just went to the local precinct to get the form made out. The other form you need, you can print off. Link to that form is in the link I posted above. |

Jaime, I bet 18.00 is for a car with 2 plates vs the 1 little plate for the bike. 10.50 was the out the door total on Friday the 3rd. Also you need to be sure what jurisdiction you live in. I live on the border of two towns, my house is 3/4s in one and 1/4 in the other. So when I went to the police dept of the town where my address, phone number and kids go to school they politely informed me I was in the wrong town. hence why it's easiest just to call 911, they take care of the town stuff for you. |

MBsween... that makes sense. Motorcyclists are second class citizens so information for us is usually "forgotten" when these websites are created. It's been so long since I lost my plate that I can't remember what it cost. All I remember is going to the local precinct, getting the report, then heading down to Motor Vehicle to get my replacement plate. Fortunately I did NOT have a vanity plate. |

Hammer, when I called 911, the first thing I said was "there is no emergency, I lost a license plate from my motorcycle and the local police dept instructed me to call 911 is this correct procedure?" The 911 guy chuckled and said yes it is, turns out he rides so he knew the drill and got my "case" taken care of quickly. Like I said before when I went to the police dept, they called 911 to get a deputy which really surprised me. I also had to do the same when I lost my cell phone (for the insurance claim). it does feel weird to use 911 for what I'd consider trivial issues, but thats NYS for you |

Nowhere in the country was 911 set up for non emergency calls, does it happen. Yes. Should it. No. I'm in no way bashing you or trying to insult you but thats what it was intended for. Now on the other hand your Police Dept needs to add some competent people or just shut it's doors. I wouldnt say it's NYS as I live and work here as well and that crap would get someone fired. The PD around here would take some info print it out and hand ya the missing/stolen slip. And a PD not knowing their jurisdictional boundaries is the funniest crap I've ever heard, I need to visit (seems as though you have a bunch of clowns running things there good luck with that) |

That DOES sound a bit weird to me. 911 is for EMERGENCY use only (supposedly). Considering that the operators are usually overworked to begin with, this does seem like a rather trivial use for the service. It's like the idiot who called 911 because Burger King wouldn't give her the burger she ordered the way she wanted it. |
