We had a BUNCH of people yesterday talking about one of our local roads with a "musical surface" grooved into it. We got curious and started "googling" to learn more. One of our engineers went up, drove it and recorded it on his IPhone... and today, curiosity got the better of me. I extended my lunch break a half hour and drove it. It freaking WORKS. It's eerie. Couple articles: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/vid eo-japanese-researchers-create-musical-pavement-ne eds-car-to-play http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/nov/13/japan. gadgets OK - for the tech geek - an article from Sound and Vibration magazine: http://www.sandv.com/downloads/0508stno.pdf The first time you hear it, it's really weird! We might have a youtube posting of it in the next couple days if they don't cover it up right away. (Message edited by slaughter on September 09, 2008) |

There are stretches of I-40 between Barstow and Needles that have grooves like that on the shoulder. Really annoying when forced to drive on the shoulder at construction zones. I guess the purpose is to awaken sleepy drivers that they are about to go off the road. They only make one note though -- perhaps they should alternate frequencies to mimic the high-low siren of French police cars. That'd wake 'em up, eh? |

Hmmmm I know they vibrate the crap outta my car when I roll over them in construction zones so I imagine quite a few women will be driving these roads |

Somebody went out today and uploaded the tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYO81ZRVXKU Kinda typical home-movie upload but it definitely gives you the sound. |
