The medallion at the end... I can't find the south park where they reference the movie, but it basically what I wrote in the post above.

And if they did build it, would it follow, "Back to the Future" rules, "Terminator" rules or "Time Rider" rules?- which according to South Park is just plain silly.

Actually, it was sort of "none of the above" rules. They figured out that there were an infinite number of universes. At any moment, there were an infinite number of paths converging on that point, and an infinite number of paths (possible outcomes) diverging from that point. So, even if you sent a message to the past, and told somebody to shoot you, and they did it, it wouldn't make any difference, because they'd actually be shooting another "you" in a parallel universe.
